Man, Fallout 2 to me was a constant stream of bad popculture references, unfunny jokes, and forgettable areas. By the time I got to San Fransisco I was completely mentally checked out. It has better game play but nothing else about it ranks compared to 1. I unironically think 3 is a better game than 2.

Yeah it hurt me alot to play. Fallout one was my first classic crpg and I loved the game to bits. Every quest interaction and character was dripping with atmosphere. By the time I'd finished (rip Ian and dog meat) I was craving more. I fired up two and got loving cheez puffs and tragic the gathering.

I'm gonna come out and say I don't like any of the companions in new vegas. Boones got a semi interesting story but he trivializes the gameplay and has bad voice acting. Veronica is barely a person, has godawful voice acting, and is tied to some of the most pain in the rear end quests in the game. Raul sort of has an interesting story but his quest is nothing and Danny Trejo was clearly just looking to cash a check. The previous post didn't even mention Lily because she's so drat forgettable. Arcade has a stupid name, although I always use him on legion runs cause his legion ending is pretty interesting. Ed-e and rex are good.
Cass annoys me that you have to double back for her, they should've really just let you speech check the ranger there to get her released.

I kind of wish I'd have been able to take follows chalk to Vegas that might've been a fun companion.

Only about half of em are good. Does anyone here even remember the name of the tribal lady you get paired with in honest hearts. And why can you not tell Christine that her girlfriend is alive and chilling in the mojave.

Less than a million maybe in the 100,000's. Even if we assume there's supposed to be way more people in new vegas than is shown in game. I don't think theres that many people, most of which are probably clustered in vault city, shady sands, and Sam Francisco.

I can't remember what happened to la after one?

Edit. I think you might be projecting the wars that happened in your life a little too much into the game. The NCR takes inspiration from a number of sources. One of the propaganda posters is literally a parody of a wwI poster. If anything the NCR resembles the earlier expansionist usa than the contemporaneous one. The relentless drive for territory and resources being more similar to the age of grover cleveland than george bush.

Six full playthroughs on ps3 and another 2 on PC and thirty minutes ago was the first time I've ever been to nelson. For whatever reason I've just always ignored that whole square of the map.

Also for the guy talking about sawyer killing ed-e on stream that's why I always have companions essential on. I play with an extremely difficult rule set. Survival, needs gain set at double for eating and drinking, no sleeping for more than an hour in non player housing, no saving, skill point gain set at 1/3, no fast travel except between major settlements, weight limit set at half normal, no putting more than seven points in any skill per level. Even with that I get too frustrated watching rex and ed-e run into my grenades to not just say gently caress it.

Ulysses has some dialogue saying that couriers serve as undercover frumentarii. It could've been an interesting take if caeser didn't give you his get outta jail card cause you walked into the 38 but because you've always been a double agent.

Gaius Marius

In a purely geopolitical sense I think the best option would be to perform surgery on caeser, help out NCR as much as possible, and then do the house ending.

Yes man leaves only the courier alive to control the mojave, and once he dies it's gonna go to poo poo like the legion will.

The NCR is exactly incompetent enough to take a victory at the drat as an invitation to invade legion territory which'll be a loving bloodbath. It'll be like the free planets alliance invading imperial territory if you've seen legend of the galactic heroes.

Caesar being alive but losing will hopefully allow him to refocus on turing the post apocalyptic worlds largest group of raiders into an actual society, instead of fixating on his dumbass hegelian ideals. And if he still tries to take the dam well terror tactics, small arms, and booby traps are not exactly effective against killer robots. And I'll take caeser everytime as a leader vs loving lanius.

House for all his insane dictatorial technocratical ideas. Seems like a stable dude who'll keep things reasonably safe for the people in his territory. He's also ironically the only truly forward thinking character in the game which is always interesting

I always interpreted (my) Wildcard ending as leaving the communities of the Mojave to run themselves autonomously tbh. The NCR has the means to help the Mojave but not the will, while places like Freeside or wherever are capable of helping themselves but kept away from sources of wealth by securitrons and NCR imperialism. Solution: protracted people’s war.

Go look up the history of poland to see what happens when you leave a weak power between two expansionist states.

Also the followers are doomed to misery because they have no actual goals or purpose. They're so busy trying to put people in rehab or deal with their minor problems they've lost sight that people are still living in a radioactive hellhole. Without a state to protect them ordinary people are doomed to be at the mercy of raiders, death claws, and whatever other godforsaken dangers exist in the wastes.

Gaius Marius

The problem with the securitrons deterrence independent mojave idea is that there's no way to stop any sort of subversion of the status quo that isn't an armed threat.

Lets say you have an independent mojave, you've done everything right, and all the communities are free to govern themselves as they see fit. Well what happens when the NCR starts telling them about all the great tax breaks they'll get if the agree to annexation. Or when the NCR starts "resettling" it's on citizens in good springs and suddenly they wanna be part of california. If you stop them you've violated they're sovereignty, if you don't your small empire will be erroded piece by piece by the larger powers around you.

The second problem is that yes man is just the house ending without a goal and with an expiration date. House has survived centuries and has the will and foresight to carry out his plans with some help from a trusted associate. The courier is a human, age unknown, whose probably not in the best of health givin' all the bullets they've taken and y'know half they're organs being removed by weird robots. Once the couriers gone whose gonna control yes man. No matter who it's almost certainly gonna trigger another war.

Anybody who likee NV should be playing a game with crippled exp gain. I just did the forlorn hope NCR quest and it was far more interesting at low level. Normally I'd do it pretty late game with 100 in multiple stats this time I had no more than sixty in any stat. Obsidian made options for low medicine characters that really made me appreciate the environmental storytelling. The medical tent is filled with empty ned x needles and bottles of whiskey. It paints a real gruesome picture I probably wouldn't 'ave noticed at 100 medicine in the base game.

If we're sharing opinions on the dlc then I'll say.

Dead money. Has some of my favorite story moments of any fallout game, everything with vera, dean and the owner whose name I forgot is fantastic. Not being able to tell veronica about Christine less so but I still enjoyed her character. And having such an unrepentent rear end in a top hat like dean working with you is interesting, especially since it avoids the common dialogue traps in the game. Goddog is less interesting solving someone's split personality by talking at them good enough is kinda dumb and gamey. Mechanically the ghost people are a fun twist on the common enemy and add some much needed variety to the combat after a couple hundred hours in the mojave. I also had zero problem with the radios or traps. No idea why people think you need lightstep. The holograms are dumb though. I don't like what it does to the lore that they're was these unlikable hardlight lads existing only to provide security for a casino, same with the matter replicators. Loot wise it's got a good mix of weapons for every playstyle. Solid 9/10 dlc

Honest hearts. I really love Daniel and Joshua. For all the poo poo I give the vo in the base game I think they killed it with the main characters in the dlcs. I also love the overt themes of religion and forgiveness. It's something games don't often talk about but something I find personally interesting. Im not crazy about the survivalist story though it's kinda ehhh and I hate tracking down his caches. The whole conflict is also pretty meh. It really feels like a sideshow, I'll give em props though for letting you just say "gently caress you and gently caress this" and just getting outta dodge. Gameplay wise it's really really meh. You can tell they were running outta time. The main quest is an extremely boring series of fetch quests, and besides my boy follows chalk the minor charcoals were incredibly forgettable. I personally don't believe any of you people actually remebered walking clouds name without looking it up. Loot wise it's got some great small guns and melee weapons, but I don't remember finding anything that great on an energy weapons playthrough. Having a thompson and a light shining in darkness makes up for it though.

OWB. I loved it the first time I played, but every playthrough afterwards has been a chore. Fallout rides a real fine line between goofy and affecting and OWB pushes way too hard into goofy, just like fallout 2 it becomes extremely hard to take anything seriously. Which might actually be a good thing because big Mt is where you shoulda sent the nuke from lonesome road. There's absolutely nothing good that's come outta that place in centuries, and all the "people" left there have pretty much earned an ignoble death. Loot wise it's great for energy weapons characters but eh, I try and avoid going there the gameplay is just too boring and fetchquesty for what you get.

Lonesome road. The first time I played I listened with rapt attention to every word ulysses said. They built him up so much I really thought he was gonna come and smash me with some real truth bombs, well in retrospect he's certainly interesting, but more so in the sense that he's a dude whose been totally broken by the wasteland. Clinging to his one-sided rivalry with the courier because it's the only thing he's got left. His appearance in the biker with the ICBM draped with the flag is extremely good and evocative though, not something I woulda thought they could've pulled off in gamebryo. Gameplay wise I actually love lonesome road. From the get go you enter a bunker that's tilted, it seems small but all the areas at strange angles and the added verticality make the same gameplay loop you've been doing for dozens of hours fresh and interesting. It's also sort of challenging which is pretty nice after how easy the main game gets after you hit the strip. It's also got some really fun weapons and gimmicks to add to the gameplay. Ed-es deal I could leave. Ed-e in the main game is one of two good companions because he doesn't loving talk, his upgrades also make him sort of OP with being able to access the benches everywhere. Having two bonus dungeons is also nice, being able to access then only by nuking people makes sense story wise but kinda sucks if you wanna have as much gameplay and content as possible but also aren't a monster who nukes people for fun.

So in the end dead money>lonesome road>honest hearts> OWB

It probably says something that OWB is the only dlc.i haven't thought about doing since I started my newest playthrough.

His NV dlc overview autoplayed while I was installing mods, he missed the point of near everything. Highlights include being dissapointed Joshua wasn't a total badass who was coming to kill caeser, him not understanding why Daniel didn't wanna genocide the white legs, and seriously wondering why Elijah was so obsessed with the vault and why he didn't just leave.

After playing with most the companions again I gotta say arcades been growing on me. Just the right amount of sass and intelligent commentary.
His quest won't fire until after you've gotten the chip though which sucks.

Veronica's dress audio clip is still the most annoying voice sample in the game. I'd forgotten how depressing her quest is as well, just no good options. Oh well I'm gonna role play the brotherhood ambush as my couriers reason for wiping out the brotherhood, if they can't even share their tech with doctors without borders than they clearly can't be trusted.

Cass is weird as hell. Her being pissed if you had bad karma was bizarre. Because the mods I use I don't get karma for killing fiends, and I need to steal a ton of poo poo to not die on survival. So I got myself in a situation where she didn't want to follow me because I didn't kill enough junkies. I do remember her quest being way longer but I think I was assuming you had to go through with the whole van graff's weapon deal to finish it. The van graff's being pissed I tattled on them to the NCR is hilarious though, ranger jackson "don't try and take matters I to your own hands" ok. Then I head to freeside and the van graff's clown car out the door and onto my 40mm grenade rounds.

It's not particularly difficult in my opinion. When the NCR showed up house was in an incredibly precarious position. He needed to get his own city state set up, make money, and avoid annexation with nearly no time to prepare. Being a businessman first and foremost can we fault him for falling back on an industry that he knew was recession proof and would attract enough tourists to force the NCR to defend the city at their own expense.

A non-human faction that wasn't reliant on the old world, and can instead survive and thrive on their own merits, would be a great contrast to the existing factions (As well as to the Master's Army from the original Fallout, which had shades of this going on but ultimately failed).
