CommissarMega posted:Sleepytime; if you have a high Sneak (and you should), then you can bring it into casinos as a holdout weapon. it also uses 10mm, which is a damned sight more common and less expensive than 12.7mm. Does the damage of Sleepytime hold up against the 12.7mm in regular fights? There aren't that many casino fights in the game that I'm inclined to pick weapons based on that.

Yasser Arafatwa posted:Man, Dead Money was easily one of least enjoyable slogs I've ever encountered. The level design was tedious, the collar and alarms were tedious, the enemies were tedious, the NPCs were entirely unpleasant to deal with, the entire background and story was uninteresting, and the ending made it feel like a complete waste of time. I really can't think of a game or DLC I regret spending time on more than Dead Money. Mass Effect 3 comes the closest. I absolutely loved Dead Money and of the NV DLC it's probably the one I enjoy re-playing the most (the least being Honest Hearts).

Basically what I think happened is this: yesterday or the day before I had passed that area of the map and a White Leg dude picked that stuff up, and later in that session Follows-Chalk died in combat. Shortly before or after (I think after) loading an earlier save, my game crashed. Anyway, I'd been playing from the earlier save, but maybe the fact that the rifle was missing from the pack somehow carried over? Last time I played Honest Hearts, Walking Cloud picked the Survivalist's Rifle up and I didn't realize until almost the end of the DLC.

You can easily finish Dead Money with a totally new character, the weapons and companions you pick up there are more than enough to deal with the fairly fragile enemies even with 0 combat skills. To get the absolute best ending I think you need quite high speech, to get the most out of looting you would want maxed lockpick/science. To get probably the second most valuable bit of loot from Dead Money you will want 7+ luck (and you can't bring in any +Luck items and there are no +Luck items in the DLC). The most valuable bit of loot you get given immediately when you start.

The stretches where you can rely on Dog or Dean to kill everyone are comparatively small compared to the stretches where you're all alone. I usually use Christine to kill all the baddies when you can take a follower, then when I'm by myself either the Holorifle or the Police Pistol will kill any of the enemies with at most three up close VATS headshots. You don't need good combat skills to make VATS shots right up close. The thing that always made them seem approachable to me as a new character is a) they never appear in large groups, b) they don't use guns or energy weapons, c) they don't really have armor, and d) they shamble around in stops and starts.

You have to break the bank at the Sierra Madre to even get the recipe to turn those vouchers in. That's actually exactly what I was talking about, although whether or not it's worth it to turn your chips from the DLC in for Pre-War Money is kind of debatable I think, since you can only get the 10 caps per stack if you have max barter.

And of course, gas bombs wreck everything. He just randomly says he's going to come down after you say you'll wait for him. I think there must have been some last minute change that wasn't fully vetted before they released Dead Money, because that dialogue has never made sense to me.

I thought it was pretty cool the first time I was able to start 'Still in the Dark' at like Level 3 (as well as haul out a suit of stolen power armor and a super sledge for Raul, essentially making him even more unstoppable) just by being willing to poke into high level areas and using some tricks. It even kinda makes more sense that way, because the areas McNamara sends you to can all be accessed early on. I've never minded this quest being difficult to do at low level. After this one you just have to a pretty trivial quest and then blammo power armor. The only bit that is really difficult at low level is Vault 34 (the Nellis AFB artillery is just poorly implemented IMO, and you have to do it anyway for other quests so eh), because for some reason the ghouls inside the vault just will not die, and some of them are sorcerers.

Reasons I recommend hardcore mode: - Companions no longer invincible (especially important for Dead Money, invincible companions here seems especially stupid) - Stimpacks have weight. - Ammo has weight. - Food/Water/Sleep pressure give you a reason to set up a base and return there periodically which breaks up the fast travel jet-setting. - Lots of items which were useless become useful (Nuka-cola, Sunset Sarsaparilla, water, food). Also I know this isn't the mod thread but JSawyer's mod and PN both are really good for rebalancing hardcore mode to make it more interesting. I play with both on.

I don't need or want to know what they are, but should I be expecting any useful energy weapons in The Lonesome Road? I played it 1/3 or 1/2 way through when it first came out, and am only finally getting around to playing it all the way through now. The flare gun and arc welder are disappointing, to say the least. Luckily I do have 100 explosives as well on this character, so getting some good mileage out of Red Glare

Perhaps I've missed the interesting backstory for the Marked Men. Are they not just Legion and NCR soldiers that were in the divide for some military purpose and then were ghoul-ified and went semi-feral? There's already a town full of ghoul NCR troops in the Mojave.

They're still in constant pain because their skin was seared off; that's why they're red. They also live in awesome little cinder-block tents. Ok so I didn't miss anything.

Why can't Veronica use the Industrial Hand? She has the required strength and it's an unarmed weapon. Does the AI prioritize the power fist above it?

It really sucks that you can't craft 25mm grenades when you can craft rockets and so many kinds of hand held explosives. My favorite explosives weapon is probably Red Glare but for some reason when I tried to use it on Legate Lanius it did gently caress all damage. Entire HE rocket magazine to his face took about 1/4 of his health.

When I got to Nipton my brain firmly reminded me that the town was completely bereft of anything useful to the cause, but I had a pleasant surprise when I bothered to explore every house. The same thing happened at REPCONN--no worries about scrounging for ammo now. Put it this way: when I do playthroughs of FO: NV I always run through all of the DLCs (exception being Lonesome Road, and to a lesser extent OWB, because it didn't exist while I was doing the bulk of my playing) but I will usually only pick and choose bits of the base game to play. This may not be a popular sentiment but I think basically each DLC had about as much to say as the entire base game, just boiled down into a much more succinct package. The best bits of FO3 were DLC, but not all of the FO3 DLC were worth playing.

The tunnelers did indeed feel very off to me. The monster design seems quite swarmy and squishy but the things seem to be at least as tough as Deathclaws and hit like trucks. Shooting them with the flare gun is a blast but ultimately kind of pointless since they take so much effort to kill.

Ravenfood posted:Not at the beginning it isn't. In FO3, you can leave the Vault and walk anywhere and not run into problems. While you can do that in FNV, its a lot harder, and you'll feel like you're forced to do the plot more. Unless you know what you're doing, FNV feels more on rails until you hit Vegas, and then it opens wide up, whereas FO3 never loses that roaming quality. Did you forget the part where you are physically stuck inside the vault for several quests (how long does this take the first time, I forget, maybe 30-60 minutes?). In NV you can run off the instant your character is created.

Only after knowing abit about the game could I actually play it without feeling like there was nothing of significance to explore and anything of substance that you did find always left you feeling like you skipped an important phase and broke something. I mean it's still like that, if you do something you're not supposed to you're more likely to break something rather than end up with any advantage. Hell, I did it again on my current playthrough. I'd never taken Veronica before, and guess what! If you get the ARCHIMEDES rangefinder before the quest tells you to you'll gently caress things up so hard it'll take some consolefuckery to fix. Fallout 3 by comparison always felt stable, wholesome, polished and open. It's just everything else where FNV pulls the long straw. The way I feel about it in the long run is Fallout 3 is an Elder Scrolls game whereas New Vegas is a Fallout game. There are two other ways to finish that quest, no need for using the console. That's such an insignificant bug.

Hra Mormo posted:What happened was having the rangefinder caused the scene with turning in the rangefinder to happen the very first time I take Veronica to see the elder. From this moment on the fact I had the rangefinder was never recognized again. When I went to the comm shack, Veronica asked me what I want to go get. Selecting the rangefinder option caused an infinite conversation loop. Eventually I just said gently caress it, and did the farming data instead. But lo and behold, bringing that to the elder didn't do jack poo poo and neither Veronica or the Elder had anything to say. I tried half a dozen fixes and the only thing that worked was using the console to force the conversation to happen. I still agree that it's an insignificant bug because Veronica's quest is insignificant in itself. Fair enough, that sounds pretty bad.
