^^Incorrect everywhere now. Steam was detecting any packs as having already owned it, but it's fixed now. The Katana is hilariously overpowered with its weapon speed mod and Slayer. You end up getting 5 attacks per a second and can just eviscerate everything.

Seeing as you don't have access to your uber gear there, being able to make some extra bullets out of all the random tin cans lying about could be useful. Honestly junk rounds are entirely worthless. If you're a guns character you can pretty much one shot anything and enemies never come in large enough numbers to warrant carrying more than a magazine or two. The police pistol is accurate enough to sneak critical the ghost people, and if you really get into a bind you can whip out the Automatic Rifle. As for an ideal build, just sneak and speech and a combat skill. Energy weapons kind of get screwed, but not too terribly, you get a seriously alpha rifle.

closeted republican posted:I'd trust the guy who actually served and seen what's going on instead of the leader. Also, I'm pretty sure that it's stated that Caesar's Legion will destroy itself once Caesar dies. Basically, they're hosed no matter what; if they destroy the NCR, they'll start having a civil war amongst themselves, and if Caesar dies before they get there, they'll lose their purpose for fighting because Caesar was the only one that actually knew what the Legion's ultimate goal is. Without him, the Legion is just a band of very violent and cruel tribals who only worked together because Caesar made them do so. I like to think that if the Courier sides with the Legion, that the Courier is essentially the Augustus Caesar of the Legion. Caesar got the ball rolling, but Augustus took it and ran like his head was on fire. It would have been an interesting ending for the Legion. Far better than the Got your head put on a coin ending. If you killed Caesar, you could wage a coup d'etat against Lanius and the other field commanders after running off the NCR and end up controlling the Legion. Your karma level and previous quest decisions could have either had you steering it towards settling and becoming a developing Empire in truth, keeping it roughly the same, or foregoing all pretenses of being a nation and instead turning into a massive barbarian horde that roamed, raped, and pillaged the outlying NCR territories. I'm really kind of sore about the Legion in general. It has tons of potential and as a new faction you didn't have to worry so much about retconning old material. But it really gets castrated for the sake of having a clear antagonist to the NCR.

I just realized that the one thing I've never seen in a Fallout game is that you never discover an intact, inhabited, and unopened vault that you didn't originally come from. It would be pretty cool if at some point in a game you come across a vault, open it up, and end up having to help the vault dweller reintegrate into the rest of world. Or worse, you crack open a vault, hoping for some good salvage, but it's like the one the Boomer's came form and you end up unleashing a well spoken and ruthless army of conquerors on the wasteland.

Astfgl posted:Isn't the problem, though, that of the however-many vaults there are, only a small small fraction of them were "control" vaults and all the rest were designed to open early, break down, or prey on their inhabitants? And weren't the control vaults programmed to open after like 200 years or something, a threshold that already came and went? Which, if memory serves, is how we got the NCR? So you make a vault where the test was how long you could keep people in a state of war and obedient through fear. The overseer and staff convinces the inhabitants that the outside world is a radioactive hellhole filled only with rapist cannibals that swarmed and devoured the other vaults, so vault [insert] has been entirely militarized since shortly after it was closed. When the player cracks the front door he's breaching their walls. Convinced they're going to be devoured by ravenous ghouls, the inhabitants start a blind, ruthless crusade to purify the lands surrounding the vault and resettle them solely with vault dwellers. Edit: I think I just described the Boomers, more or less.

Wolfsheim posted:What does this mean? I'm not sure what you're saying. The perks use what the GECK calls a form list that lists every piece of armor in the game that isn't effected by the perk. Think of it like a filter, with only effected armor sets getting through being the ones that aren't listed. It's really counter intuitive and more than a little . For instance in my little housing mod the weapon sorter list for pistols lists the ID of every weapon in the game except for 7 or 8 pistols and when it is run it checks the ID of each weapon against that list and only puts them in the pistol box when their ID isn't present. Probably more than you want to know: This becomes a massive, massive pain in the rear end when you are trying to add, remove, or sort things. You have to make a command to remove none of the items in the core game (to make sure that you don't have mod weapons/armors being added to the wrong container), then a command to remove the weapons you want in the box(like the example with the pistols above) then you have another command to return to non-core items back to the inventory. When trying to support DLCs it gets even worse. You have to manually script in an addformtoformlist command for every list you have, for every item added. So adding one pistol to the pistol sort list requires 6 different commands, one for adding it to the miscellaneous list, then for the heavy weapon list, then for the assault rifle list, etc. Rather than just getting one concise command to add it to one list, you get huge piles like this: AddFormToFormList LSWeaponsWallBlank NVDLC02WeapYaoGuaiGauntletUnique AddFormToFormList LSWeaponsWallEnergy NVDLC02WeapYaoGuaiGauntletUnique AddFormToFormList LSWeaponsWallHeavy NVDLC02WeapYaoGuaiGauntletUnique ;AddFormToFormList LSWeaponsWallMelee NVDLC02WeapYaoGuaiGauntletUnique AddFormToFormList LSWeaponsWallPSSMG NVDLC02WeapYaoGuaiGauntletUnique AddFormToFormList LSWeaponsWallRifles NVDLC02WeapYaoGuaiGauntletUnique AddFormToFormList LSThrownSort NVDLC02WeapYaoGuaiGauntletUnique And that is a small one. Crafting items are a nightmare and require significantly more. The only redeeming quality is that the addformtoformlist command can be easily incorporated into additional modules without mucking up the original mod .esp. Also its the only way to maintain item condition across containers through scripting without going to the ends of the earth.

^^^ I'm convinced that Bethesda originally developed the game with the premise being 20 years after the war rather than 200, but somewhere along the way a story writer decided that Project Purity needed to take the front stage. Chairman Mao posted:I mean, I like New Vegas better, there's more variety in the missions and the environments, the characters are for the most part more interesting and the moral choices it has you make are more complex than pet the kitty and give it some milk/gently caress the kitty and cut off its head, but it doesn't quite capture the "oh god everything is hosed we're all hosed everything is dead everyone is dead I'm gonna die out here" vibe that 3 had. I agree on this. Fallout 3 had a much more distinct "Society has completely fallen apart and my remaining lifespan outside the vault is probably measured in months." Leaving the Vault in Fallout 3 in particular had a much more "Oh poo poo I'm completely unprepared to survive here" feeling to it, and somewhat ironically I felt more endangered then than I did after getting shot twice in the head. That's really the only major positive thing I can think of for FO3 vs. NV, though.

Cream-of-Plenty posted:This is why I dislike Bethesda's general approach to storytelling. Set a sequel too far ahead of the previous games? Now you have to shoehorn everything into the current setting, even if it doesn't make sense chronologically speaking. Fallout 3 would have worked far, far better if you set it 9 years after the bombs fell, the BoS was instead remnant Pentagon Security Forces that had rebelled against the Enclave, Enclave was Enclave, and Project Purity was about scrubbing radiation from the wasteland rather than just from the water.
