Excellent episode with the teaser on Planet Money. Chana Joffe-Walt is a ~~really great journalist~~ kind of a lying shithead. I'm glad they pointed fingers at the vanishing job market for the decline in communities and the growth in disability.

Thanks for this, honestly. That story really grabbed me and it's good to know it's not as bad as she made out or rather, hopefully the story and the fact-checking will bring light to the real solutions to this boondoggle. gently caress, TAL, get it together with your fact checking.

Yeah, there was definitely more victim blaming in the Planet Money teaser. Maybe she could have done more to blame the fleeing employers for this boondoggle. I saw that just on the edges of the piece but you're right, it should have been explicit.

I don't usually think about the show that way, probably because most media produced in America is intended to be consumed primarily by Americans. There's a level of assumption there that colors everything. Like, 99.5% of fictional high schools are completely batshit and overstuffed with tropes, but since most Americans went to real American high schools, we all know just how batshit and unrealistic those portrayals are. The idea that people in other countries might be taking this stuff at face value is kinda scary. I'd be interested to know what someone with a different, outside perspective enjoys most about "This American Life."

There was one about a prison performing Hamlet in one act per month (to avoid crowd gathering & rioting problems) that was fantastic. I think it was called "Act V"?

You're also completely missing the point, Sarah. The point is if you want to go and find experts and put a team on it and blah blah then yeah I bet you could make any topic interesting. The point is in normal social conversation, with normal, everyday people.. you don't want to hear about their diets in detail. Do you really give that much of a poo poo about their history of health? People that talk about money incessantly are pains in the rear end.

Yeah.. I guess this the side of TAL I don't like. Fiction stories are a lot better than this.

TAL producers are exactly the kind of people who'd be offended that no one wants to listen to their boring dreams or health problems.

I usually delete podcast episode off my phone after a few days to make space because I listen to probably 2 dozen.

Yeah, they do repeat a lot. Ah well. They were asking for money last week. I should probably end some so they can branch out a bit more.

I doubt this. They're a show. They'll do what gets them audience share. If the Squirrel Fable and Droll Tidbit demographic is big enough, they'll get back to it. Personally, I think Snap Judgement has been doing a much better job of what TAL used to be the best at, and some of TAL's best work has been in their more serious pieces, but there still seems to be room for the coastal hipster bits that people know and love.

I now prefer Snap Judgement to TAL, but they're both lower tier podcast played last for me.

In the last 6 months a woman who makes a YouTube series saying, "Hey, maybe using dead hookers a props sends a bad message to women who like video games" got literal death threats and had to cancel an event because someone threatened to shoot her.

But yes, Lindy West was making it all up. Totally.

This is something that is coming up a lot in Canada in the Jian Ghomeshi trial and the idea of a "perfect victim." How should a rape survivor act in order to be taken seriously? And why is rape seemingly unique in that the actions of the survivor afterward can cast aspersions on whether or not the crime actually happened? People react to trauma differently and in unique ways and that seems beyond the understanding of others.

how hard is it to differentiate concern about the obesity epidemic and support for real preventive measures (which is fine and something you can do/have) and going up to individual obese people on the street and telling them they need to lose weight and are unhealthy (which you should not do).
