I don't think it's our place to tell uncivilised countries(in my mind all countries that have the death penalty are uncivilised) how to arrange their societies. Different cultures and all that.

I tried to google if a footballer has ever gotten the death penalty but it's just results of American universities' american football teams getting the death penalty which in my opinion is incredibly harsh but different cultures and that innit.

Whew, oh man, I'm glad this was cleared up. Turns out Anton Rodgers & Co were just having a bit of banter and it was just a big joke.

quote:

Anton Rodgers, 20, denied there was a sexual element to what went on in a Brighton hotel room in July 2011.

"It was just a bit of boy banter. It was a laugh but it seems stupid now," he told the Old Bailey.

Mr Rodgers, George Barker, 21, Lewis Dunk, 21, and Steve Cook, 21, deny sexual assault and voyeurism.

The offences are alleged to have taken place at the Jurys Inn Hotel after the Brighton and Hove Albion footballers had gone out to celebrate winning the Sussex Senior Cup.

Mr Cook now plays for Bournemouth.

Giving evidence, Mr Rodgers denied the 19-year-old woman was asleep.

"She was just giggling. She was laughing. She was bubbly," he told the jury.

The trial continues.

An update on the Anton Rogers & Co. sexual assault case with the jury failing to reach a verdict. Looks like a retrial set for April 22 with a new jury.

quote:

A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the case of four footballers accused of sexual assault.

Brighton players Anton Rodgers, 20, George Barker, 21, Lewis Dunk, 21, and former team-mate Steve Cook, also 21, denied the charge and one of voyeurism.

The prosecution told jurors at the Old Bailey the men humiliated a woman, 19, for their sexual gratification.

Jurors also failed to reach a verdict on the voyeurism charge, except in the case of Mr Dunk who was acquitted.

The assault was alleged to have taken place in July 2011 while the woman slept in the Jury's Inn Hotel in Brighton.

She claimed she fell asleep following a drunken night out clubbing and saw photographs of the incident on Mr Rodgers' mobile phone in the morning.

The players denied any wrong doing.

Prosecutor Richard Barton told the court he would seek a retrial, provisionally set for 22 April, after discussing the case with the complainant.

Mr Cook, who was on Brighton and Hove Albion's books at the time of the alleged assault, signed for Bournemouth last year.

A right old mess but it must be very difficult for the jury 4 people on 2 different charges and the only evidence available from a girl who says she was asleep but saw lots of photographs and men who seem to be finger pointing at each other and only one actual photograph found as evidence. Hopefully the next jury will do their job and the girl gets some peace of mind but in the mean time the only people that are benefitting is the lawyers.

I have a sad story regarding one of the best strikers that has ever played for my team.

Mário Jardel was a brilliant, brilliant scorer. Not especially gifted with his feet, but one of the best headers in the game and just overall amazing at finding goals. Hired from Vasco in 1994, he was part of Grêmio's winning Libertadores campaign in 1995, being the top scorer with 12 goals. Every Grêmio supporter that's between 20 and 30 years old now probably still has a kid-sized #16 jersey stuffed somewhere in their belongings. Shorty thereafter, he transferred to Porto, where he proceeded to be the top goalscorer in all goddamned Europe on two seasons (98-99, 99-00), top scorer in the 99-00 UCL alongside Raúl and Rivaldo, and have a 1.04 average goals per match (130 goals in 125 games). After a brief stint in Galatasaray, where he couldn't really adapt - but still kept his great average and won the UEFA Supercup -, he went back to Portugal, this time playing for Sporting. Again, he was Europe's top scorer with 42 goals in 30 matches, winning all three Portuguese national titles.

After seven years of amazing play, Jardel was sure to become a top striker for one of the best European teams at age 28, in the year of 2002.

He has gone through 15 different clubs since, most of them quite small, scoring about 40 goals in the last 11 years - less than what he scored in a single season, in 01-02.

Jardel became a victim of a crippling cocaine habit, which made him fat, lazy, prone to injuries and a much, much worse player. That much was confessed by him in 2008, when he returned to Brazil to play for Série B's Criciúma. Although he apparently kicked the habit, he could never return to form, becoming a journeyman striker playing extremely short contracts for Série D clubs, a joke and a vague memory to most football fans. It's quite a sad tale, but he now thinks about becoming a coach and doesn't show signals of recent drug abuse, so there's a silver lining to the story, even if a faint one.

Nah, he came to my club Sporting and that's where he led us to the title and scored all those goals, he never played for Benfica. He's a legend here in Portugal because we (Porto and Sporting fans) only had to put up with him when he was one of the best strikers in the world, his downfall only came when he moved away though his taste for the night life was already pretty notorious when he played in Portugal, not only alcohol and drugs but also gambling. Rarely have I seen such a prolific poacher, he didn't do much for the team but he was always in the right place to score thus his ridiculous goal record, in recent times Falcao was obviously an icon for Porto but even he didn't come close to the impact Jardel had in that team, which should give people an idea of his talent.

France international under suspicion of soliciting underage prostitute

Here's the catch: this is a new case

quote:

French football is braced for another possible child prostitution scandal after it emerged that an international player was under suspicion for allegedly soliciting a teenaged girl.

The Paris prosecutors' office confirmed that a preliminary inquiry into prostitution of a minor had been opened and a France international was under suspicion after a teenage girl was arrested for shoplifting.

The girl, who is now 16, was arrested late last year in central Paris and found to be carrying drugs and fake ID. Police suspected that someone in her entourage intended to push her into paid sex and had given her cocaine. On investigation of her phone, police found the name of one French international footballer and another player from France's Ligue 1. Text messages and photographs were also found on the phone. French media reported that the names of a rapper and a TV reality show contestant might also have been found on the phone.

No charges have been made so far, and the investigation by child protection officers continues.

The prosecutors' office told Associated Press: "Checks have to be made first of all. For the moment it is [a case of] suspicion."

The investigation comes as two of France's biggest international football stars are to face trial in June for allegedly soliciting an underaged prostitutem – one of the most high-profile scandals to hit French sport.

Franck Ribéry, a winger for the German club Bayern Munich, and Karim Benzema, one of Real Madrid's top strikers, have been ordered to stand criminal trial over paid sexual encounters with Zahia Dehar, who was then under 18. If found guilty, they risk three years in prison and a €45,000 (£39,000) fine. They will appear with six other defendants, some of whom will be prosecuted for "aggravated pimping".

The long-running Dehar case, which began as a police investigation into allegations of a pimping ring centred on an expensive nightclub near the Champs Elysées, tarnished the image of French football, upset the France team during their fraught 2010 World Cup in South Africa and has since become an extraordinary celebrity saga in France.

Dehar, who has now begun a high-profile career as an underwear designer, told investigators that Benzema had paid sex with her in 2008, when she was 16. She said Ribéry had paid sex with her the following year, allegedly flying her to Munich as a 26th "birthday present" to himself. Both players deny the charges. Ribéry said he had not known Dehar was under 18.

Saw a great french produced documentary about match fixing in football and the gambling industry. There's some people from Interpol, UEFA and economists explaining the process in great detail. It's incredibly interesting to see how the chinese mafia runs it all in cooperation with italian, balcan and turkish mafia to launder vast amounts of money. The interviews with the italian players who got busted for it is great as well, and just goes to show how corrupted the sport is at some levels. The amount of money in sports gambling is mind boggling. Also, I didn't know that match fixing was such a big problem in Belgium.

Anyway, it's called "It's a Bet! Sports and Gambling", and you can see the first 18 minutes for free at their website: http://sales.arte.tv/detailFiche.action?programId=2727&request_locale=en
