That's "soccer fans" as a pejorative, as I hurl songsheets and make "fight and win" noises at all the posters.

Genuinely surprised that of all the United youth products of that time, Gary Neville has become the most respectable and someone I look forward to hearing perspective from. Not to say anyone outside of Giggs has really done anything wrong, but Gary was the biggest dickhead to watch as a non-United fan.

Giggs prior to the affair stuff always seemed so similar to Scholes as far as temperament. But maybe that's just my dumb old brain forgetting poo poo during his playing career.

Giggs' tabloid gag orders go way back, that's the only reason he seemed more similar to Scholes than say Sharpe or Yorke who were supposedly out shagging everything (iirc Yorke was one of the list of players who also shagged Rhodri's wife during the 8 year innings). Easier to get gagging orders if you know exactly what needs gagging, though.

The surprising thing isn't that Giggs is the least respectable of that era but that he might well be outdoing his scumbag father at this point.

Giggs is still getting paid by the FAW because his court date and actual conviction keeps getting pushed back. It's not simple to terminate a contract just because the boy's a wrong'un.

Just FYI, if a ~50 year old woman takes a swing at you, a ~30 year old man, you do not have the right to vent your daydreams about hitting women.

Footballers are privileged in that their labour is valued appropriately to the revenue they generate for their employers and company shareholders, but they're still working people. A few big paycheques and flash car doesn't suddenly give them generational wealth and a peerage.

Footballers exit the working class when they become landlords, which is very feral indeed.

Sadio Mane basically owns a village now but he's not sitting on a throne demanding the serfs bequeath him a percentage of their income. Yet.

Footballers pay way more in taxes than companies and directors, they are working class heroes and agents are allies (RIP Mino).

Tsaedje posted:

There's at least 3 different understandings of what class means in the UK.

The one most people understand is just tied to wealth, but there's also the one where anyone who sells their labour is working class.

There's also a sort of caste system of class where a builder born into poverty (or a footballer, perhaps) could gain wealth and transition into having a successful business or a property portfolio and become a wealthy landlord, which would take them out of the 'working class' by the first two definitions, but would never make them good enough to be considered an equal by much of the professional middle class, let alone the upper class.

The idea of a "middle class" was invented to divide the working class. A successful and comfortable working class person is still working class. Their income is still dependent on how their labour is valued, and subject to exploitation by the capital class.
