I grew up in the municipality where Overmars is from. He once showed up in my elementary school classroom because some kid in school had won a local free kick competition to give the kid in question a ball signed by the entire Ajax selection at the time. He also arranged for Barcelona to work a training on the grounds of his childhood team. He was from before the time of truly insane wages, but he's still living comfortably, owning multiple businesses in the area. Needless to say, a lot of hot takes in local (social) media following that news coming out.

So the Overmars story is getting messier by the day. Initially it was reported that the story finally got out because Edwin van der Sar, who is in charge of day to day affairs at Ajax, sent out an e-mail reminding people of the procedures surrounding sexual harassment. This is assumed to have been sparked due to several celebrities working for the Dutch edition of The Voice having several credible sexual assault and rape accusations made against them, including police reports being filed.

However, tonight, two separate newspapers have published articles quoting several anonymous (former) employees who also handed over WhatsApp messages to corroborate the story. The employees say that Overmars' transgressive behaviour was known for years, that several women in the past had made complaints that went nowhere, and that there was a general macho culture, especially among the leadership. They describe Overmars as 'a creepy uncle' who was nicknamed 'Geilneef' (literally 'horny (male) cousin). They also allege that it's impossible that Van der Sar was unaware of Overmars' behaviour, although he himself denies knowing anything about it.

No English news article to link to on this one yet, as the news broke late in the evening, but it turns out that the sports desk for Dutch public broadcast television has been absoltuely dire. A report came out tonight, with credible evidence, that for more than twenty years several major presenters fostered a toxic workplace culture including notable presenters having affairs with interns half their age, and aggressive bullying of anyone in the editing room who didn’t support Ajax, including one of the biggest names in Dutch football reporting screaming in the face of a PSV-supporter when PSV conceded a goal in a European match.

And the cherry on the poo poo-sundae is that the wife of that presenter, Tom Egberts (who was the aforementioned screaming bully, and also one of the guys having affairs with women half his age, and also referred to her as ‘the serpent’ when discussing her with colleagues after she broke it off) is married to the woman leading the organisation that was founded a few years ago to give people a place to file reports of abuse and (sexual) harassment in the Dutch entertainment industry after a major sex abuse scandal broke at the Dutch edition of The Voice.

And the worst part is, the people in charge of sports broadcasting knew that all of this was going on. Not only did female staff members and interns circulate e-mails amongst themselves warning each other to stay away from certain men, multiple women have come forward stating that when applying for internships, they were flat-out told by the managers of sports broadcasting that they shouldn’t apply to have certain men as mentors because ‘they didn’t know how to behave themselves around women’.

So there was a bizarre bit of (non-gambling related) match fixing in the Dutch third division, the second highest tier of Dutch amateur football. Places in the playoffs for promotion are assigned to the three clubs who were most successful for a third of the league. If a club with a period title ends up winning the league and direct promotion, their playoff slot goes to the club that was #2 for the third of the competition they were most successful in.

In the final round of the regular competition, GVVV was playing against Barendrecht. In the 80th minute, Barendrecht was up 3-1. GVVV already won the playoff slot during the second of the third periods. In the standing for the third period championship, ACV Assen, the club that had already won direct promotion was in the lead. A fourth club, Sparta Nijkerk, was second in the standings for the third period. With Barendrecht up 3-1, it looked like the final standings for the third period would be:

1. ACV Assen
2. Sparta Nijkerk
3. GVVV

Which would mean Sparta Nijkerk would win the third period championship, because ACV Assen had won the whole league and direct promotion. However, in the final ten minutes, Barendrecht conceded three very obvious goals, which resulted in a GVVV victory that put them in second place for the third period championship. Since they had already won a period championship in the second period, the playoff slot for the third period would default to the highest ranking team in the league that didn’t have a period championship - Barendrecht.

So by deliberately conceding those three goals, they thought they had secured themselves a playoff slot in spite of not having won any of the three period titles. Sparta Nijkerk, the club that got screwed, ended up filing a protest with the Royal Dutch Football Association, who ended up deducting Barendrecht four points in the standing for unsportsmanlike conduct, which meant that they dropped from third in the league to fifth.

However, that didn’t end up affecting the standings for the third period title, which meant that the promotion playoff spot went to SteDoCo, the new #3 in the league.

That seems absolutely mad lol. Surely there's now a push to change to a system that doesn't allow for a team to improve their league position by losing?

That was pretty much the position of Barendrecht: "Us deliberately losing wasn't unsportsmanlike, because you created a system in which us deliberately losing was the only way we could make the playoffs." Of course there's calls to change the system to something a little less dumb. Period championships are used in all but the highest leagues, meaning that there's a hypothetical situation where a team can qualify for both the relegation and promotion playoffs.

Two Legia palyers got into a fight with the dutch riot police and were arrested after the game agains AZ yesterday lol

Supposedly an AZ staff member was hospitalised with a concussion and a broken elbow. Meanwhile the Legia Warsaw chairman claimed that the man that was hospitalised instigated the fight, and acted like he was under the influence of drugs. Polish public prosecutors have announced that they'll be investigating how Dutch police handled the situation.

So there’s now two separate stories going around:

1. According to Kroes, he was merely naive. He didn’t know that what he did was insider trading, and he just wanted to show his support for his new club. On top of that, he had told the board of directors about his stock purchase back in August, and he doesn’t know why they decided to take action now.
2. According to the board of directors, Kroes had informed them that he owned Ajax stock, but neglected to tell them that he had bought those shares between him being told he got the job and being formally announced. They only found out about the timing of the purchase last week, and after getting outside legal device moved to suspend him and terminate his contract.

Also, just for the sake of numbers, the €180.000 worth of Ajax stock he bought is currently worth about €164.000.

Update on the Ajax/Kroes drama - it now came out that Kroes owned even more Ajax shares, bought while he was still CEO of AZ, supposedly before he even started negotiating with Ajax for a new job. Regardless of whether or not he was talking to Ajax when he bought his first shares, it's still a violation of the integrity rules for the national football federation.
