Jo3sh posted:There's a shop near me that I hesitate to call a 'liquor store' or 'bottle shop' as it seems to be so much more than that. They have a beer and wine tasting room as well as regular beer, wine and whisk(e)y tastings. Perhaps the most distinctive thing about them, though, is the fact that the staff will happily spend an hour or more helping you choose a single bottle. "A good liquor store"

I thought Laphroaig was good, particularly the QC... until I started drinking Ardbeg.

I was on vacation in Scotland last week and it made me realize I should probably find this thread. Spent a few days on Islay and an afternoon at Usquabae in Edinburgh. Wild trip all around. Highlights were definitely: touring Laphroaig, Ardbeg 23, and Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1(which I really need to chase down a bottle of)

bitprophet posted:LL/JK is where it's at Yeah I thought Ardbeg 22 was pretty meh, and 23 was the best whisky I've ever had. I mean, the 22 wasn't BAD, but I suspect I'd pick Ardbeg 10 over it blind. Which isn't fair because Ardbeg 10 is loving off the chain.

Toast Museum posted:Single-malt beginner question: if I enjoy Laphroaig 10, what's a good next step at a similar price point? Ardbeg anything, other Laphroaigs, lagavulin, some of bruichladdich's peated stuff. Kind of a wide recommendation, but IMO those 4 have a pretty solid lock on heavily peated, and they make enough to explore for a long time. Edit: also smokehead, it's a not specified islay single malt. Very cheesy label, very good but straightforward dram for cheap. Tiny Chalupa posted:Looking for suggestions on how to expand my collection of Whisky. I tend to not be a super Peat fan. The most "peat" like bottles I've enjoyed so far are anything Lagavulin and some of the Highland Park stuff. If there are suggestions on to how to get into Islay stuff more, I'd be all ears. My current collection is: Bruichladdich, the really run the gamut with peat -- including some entirely unpeated stuff.

I'm just loving spoiled to pieces right now, grabbed a Bruichladdich black arts 5.1 and Ardbeg supernova 2019. Couldn't be more different, but they're both bliss.

TobinHatesYou posted:I have not tried too many Octomores, but the ones I did were not only drinkable, they were delicious and highly warming. It's hard to describe, but the smoke starts from the back of the mouth and rolls forward in waves. I had a flight of Octomores a few months ago and they were really all over the place. All good, but some were young and raw, some older and smoother. 7.3 is wild, it's 5yo, 63%(!!) but smooth and salty and heavy with vanilla (and a gently caress ton of peat).

Stultus Maximus posted:Bowmore is probably what you'd want there. IMO Bowmore is *easily* the worst distillery on Islay. Ardbeg 10 is one of the best whiskys in the world, and also the basic Ardbeg entry so hard to go wrong with that. edit: I think I have a peat tolerance but Mao Zedong Thot fucked around with this message at 15:40 on Jan 23, 2020 |

Snagged an Octomore 10.1 (just finished off a 7.3 and I have an 8.2 waiting for me) Kicking myself so bad for not taking a tour when I was at Bruichladdich in the fall. I gotta go back.... I got a bottle of something not super peaty for a change yesterday: Auchentoshan 12 and blech, I don't think I like it. It tastes like watery milk or something, weird and bad.

I've had pb whiskey in a cocktail. It was fine or good there, the bartender poured us a bit straight and it was tastyish but not something I would ever drink on its own. Theirs was homemade/infused if it matters.
