Just wanted to show my face and say I love Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace.

powderific posted:I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive whisky that isn't too sweet. I really like the single malt scotches I picked up, a Laphroiag 10yr and Highland Park 12yr, but I'd like to have something a bit on the lower end of the price range for sharing freely. It seems like there are lots of recommendations for inexpensive but good bourbons--I've had and enjoyed Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, and Elijah Craig--while most other whisky discussion is on the pricier single malt scotches. Is there a blended scotch or something else sortof cheap I might try out? Laphroiag 10 year was smokey as gently caress iirc. I can't think of a bourbon similar, and honestly I don't think there's a scotch that's good under the $40 a 750ml. Scotch is vastly different than bourbon. Laphroiag is a scotch, so is Highland Park, but then you name 3 bourbons that you liked. I'm confused as to what you want. Honestly you're not going to find much better than Buffalo Trace for the price, but that's a bourbon, not a scotch...I don't think there's such a thing as a good cheap scotch. Elijah Craig 12 year is probably more up your alley as Buffalo Trace was a bit sweet.

FreelanceSocialist posted:Lots of hype and a luxurious image. It's to whiskey what Armand de Brignac is to champagne. Good, but you can do much better for much less (in fact, I much prefer Double Black and Gold to Blue). Agreed 100%. I didn't like Blue, but Gold and Double Black were very easy to drink too much of without realizing it.

I'm not very good with describing bourbon, even though I love it, but I recently picked up a Jefferson's Reserve and it is wonderful. Even neat the aroma only carries a mild alcohol presence that really highlights a sweet, almost butterscotch, aroma. The flavor is very similar, I'm not getting much oak, just a mildly sweet butterscotch that's very drinkable. I really enjoy this, one of the smoothest bourbons I've had.

I am properly trying my Baker's tonight and it's pretty dang good and on the sweet side, but it has a nice alcohol bite that is actually pleasant unlike some others I've had that had strong alcohol presences.

Powdered Toast Man posted:Baker's is very good but for small batch I will forever be a Booker's devotee until I find something better. I have yet to find that. I think Booker's is my favorite, but Jefferson's Reserve may have taken it over. Also with my Baker's bottle I've completed the Beam Small Batch set and here's the order I'd rank them: Booker's > Basil Haydens > Baker's >>>>>>> Knob Creek Single Barrel. I love all of them except the Knob Creek Single, I am almost scared to try it again.

What are some great bourbons under $20?

Buffalo Trace is $25 here, my favorite bargain bourbon. I'll try Old Grandad, I've heard good things.

I'm enjoying my Jefferson's Reserve with two cubes just barely floated. I like my bourbons like this personally.

I finally got around to getting some Black Maple Hill bourbon and it's pretty great.

I've started using water instead of ice for my bourbon and I'm much happier.

NightConqueror posted:Good man. I remember graduating from coke + bourbon to ice + bourbon then to water + whisky, and boy what a difference. While some people may like ice, if you're really in it to savor some of the flavor you have to have it room temp. Cold kills flavor. How much water do you add? I saw a "how to drink scotch" video some master distiller made, I forget the distillery but it was an oddball guy who throw much scotch on the ground, but he seemed to add a lot of water. He said he added enough to dilute it to 30% to get the most amount of flavor. I've been following this personally.

For the bourbon dilution I've been taking it by ear, if I can smell alcohol I usually add a little more.

Either way, leaving open/vague responses really doesn't help the thread, I guess I'm not either by responding, but I'll add content here. I drank some Bakers last night and while I thought it was rough at first, I really enjoy it now. It's definitely a bolder bourbon than most I've had.

I work at a liquor store and we get many of those "I've been drinking Jack for 30 years," types. I once suggested, "well isn't it time to try something new?" That was the first and last time ever.

I finished my Jefferson's Reserve very small batch bourbon last night and it's one of the smoothest neat bourbons you will find. It was far too easy for me to finish the bottle and makes even Blantons seem a bit rough. Onto my Black Maple Hill orange ink bottle now.
