Anybody recommend a good white corn whiskey? I enjoyed a bottle of George Dickel White #1 I got at their distillery, but I killed it and the state agency that controls all liquour distribution in our (anti-government, socialist hating) state doesn't stock it. I'm not making out of state trips while the world is burning, so are there any other brands out there worth it? https://www.totalwine.com/spirits/white-whiskeymoonshine/george-dickel-white-1/p/137871750

Costco has the 3 packs of 375ml (half-size) Maker's Mark bottles. One of cask strength, one of the 46, and one of Private Select, my all-time favorite whiskey, more than a lot of the high dollar stuff I've tried. They're about 70 bucks. If you have a friend in that price range, they're a neat gift.

Anybody had the Michter's Toasted Rye? I've missed getting a bottle 3 years in a row at these annual releases.

I was seriously underwhelmed by the bottle of Weller I bought two years ago. You could literally bottle it with a white label that has a blue stripe running under the word BOURBON and nothing else.

DoctaFun posted:I think a good makers mark private selection stands up very well against the Weller line up My man. The first year I really went wild with the rare stuff, I liked MM Private Select more and more than any of them. It's still my favorite. So the next year got a lot easier. Just grabbed as many of them as I could. I like that Costco has it in their gift packs now, I can proselytize.

Deceptive Thinker posted:That was also the allocated toasted barrel barrel proof in their lineup which punches way above it's price point compared to the regular rye I've been trying to get my hands on the toasted for a couple of years now. Is it that much better?

Found out about Sortilege from an episode of Letterkenny; does it taste any better than the regular store brand maple flavored stuff like Crown?

JD's normal rye was really the first rye I tried a few years ago. I liked it, but I don't think I could go back to it with some of the other stuff that's grabbed my palate since.

If you're ever in Birmingham, look up Dread River Distillery downtown. It's an interesting tour. The tasting room is a huge beautiful bar and lounge, with a good kitchen backing it up. The company's a bit of an odd duck; the team doctor for Alabama and his buddies essentially poured money into starting it up, and they have about 8 million bucks in equipment sitting there running at 15% capacity as they futz around with formulas and grow the brand. They make drat near every spirit (vodka, gin, tequila, whiskey), and apparently the CEO used to be on the ABC board, so they essentially had distribution unlocked from day one. It'd probably piss off a small craft distiller to see (it's definitely money chasing expertise), but the employees we talked to were nice folks that were really excited about the company. They're just now getting their own bourbon to the age where they can start selling some (it is pretty raw, but smoother than other 4 years I've had). The other brand in Birmingham is Redmont, which apparently has Charles Barkley as the public-facing owner and doesn't really have any attraction on site like tours or a tasting room yet.

I've got a floating IKEA cubby shelf with most of my bar stuff on there and I've beefed up the ledger board under it 2 separate times because of how scared that scenario makes me. I even move most of the bottles back towards the wall so there's less lever effect.

ABC board here has changed to monthly releases. Big one this month was Buffalo Trace and Blanton's, I think a Larceny barrel proof and a 4 Roses something or other. I got there 2 hours before opening this morning and was 2nd in line, which is good because they only had six bottles of Blanton's. I hadn't had it in a few years, and when I got it home it was just as delicious as I remembered.

How'd people like Early Times BIB? ABC Board is doing a release this Saturday, but considering the opportunity cost is a bottle of Blanton's the only way I'd look around is if I was beaten in line I might drive a little to the further store over, here's the list of releases but they're more likely to have 4AM crazies in line. Ended up with a bottle of John J Bowman, and a bottle of Foursquare 2009 Dark Rum. Opened the rum, it smells heavenly but is so goddamned hot on the tongue. Also, they were selling Blanton's miniatures, which I did not know was a thing. edit- after a few nips, that rum has an amazingly complex flavor. Some things there I couldn't begin to identify. If it had a little less burn ( I guess I could water it down) it would be a top-notch drink. GD_American fucked around with this message at 18:17 on Oct 23, 2021 |
