Sorry for the shoddy writing quality, but here's my reccomendations: Irreversible I've seen a ton of messed up movies (horror is my favorite genre), but none of them have stuck with me like this movie. I guess you can call it a revenge drama, but it's more of a meditation on violence. Sounds cliche, but does it the best out of all the movies I've seen tackle the topic. Not for the faint of heart but if you like dark, intense films definitely check it out. In a similar vein, Enter the Void is also on Watch Instantly and is by the same director, it is also on of the most beautifully shot films I've ever seen. Winter's Bone This movie made quite a splash in the festival circuit, and was a huge critics' favorite, but hardly anyone I know has seen it. Great atmosphere, and the lead actress did a phenomenal job. Trick 'r Treat This is THE Halloween Movie to watch. Christmas gets Rudolf and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Halloween gets this movie. Very reminiscent of Tales From the Crypt, it's a collection of four interwoven stories that all occur on Halloween night. The best way I can think to describe it is "fun". Let the Right One In One of the best modern horror films of all time. A Swedish vampire coming-of-age tale. Yes, I know how it sounds, but this is as far from Twilight as you can get. It was remade and released in the US as Let Me In, and while many people love the remake, I think the original is far superior. If you have even a passing interest in horror, please check this movie out. Dogtooth A dark Greek comedy about a man who keeps his family isolated from society and raises his kids to believe ludicrous things, like that cats are horrible flesh eating creatures. It's as bizarre as it sounds. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans This is the kind of movie where Nicolas Cage shines. He plays a New Orleans detective who slowly goes batshit crazy. There's random fisheye shots of iguanas, interrogations of senior citizens, and Eva Mendes playing a prostitute; There's really no reason why you shouldn't watch this.

Just purchased a new tv the other day that has the ability to view netflix on it, etc etc. So I sign up for Netflix, having seen and heard that it has all kinds of stuff on it. Crap indeed, it really was terrible. It is not designed to be watched on large tv's. The quality of the videos is terrible. Yes I understand that it's streaming, but is it that hard to give higher quality? Or is that why it costs next to nothing? In terms of content, I can't claim to be a deep thinker, or that. I unabashedly like mainstream things. I was under the impression that most anything could be found on there. Boy was I wrong. I did find an old favourite, and its 'sequel'. I'm not sure I would call this a recommendation though. For Reference: Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus Fairly self explanatory. Military uses some kind of device, frees these creatures. Lots of people die, in very odd ways. Terrible movie, so bad its worth watching. In the end they have to find a way to stop them, or everyone dies (The horror!). Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus See above, but substitute Crocosaurus for Giant Octopus Watching these on there had no effect because the quality is terrible regardless of what medium you use, be it streaming, computer, dvd etc. Overall, very disappointed with Netflix so far mainly because of the video quality, and lack of new programming. Going to give it a go for awhile though, because I still need to explore it to its fullest extent from the sounds of things. Also, I reside in Canada, and have heard rumour's that we get a crappy version to that of the U.S. Can anyone confirm or deny that one?

Wristcutters: A Love Story Not sure how well-known this one is, but I just happened to see it recommended on there and checked it out. It's about a guy who kills himself because his girlfriend broke up with him and he ends up in a strange purgatory-like place. He eventually learns his girlfriend killed herself as well, so he sets out to find her. I guess this movie is kind of a black-comedy? It has some funny moments, but it's not joke after joke after joke. The movie itself has a similar feel to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, so if you loved that one you should definitely check this one out.

Netflix Instant is your one-stop shop for finding people putting themselves into all of the survivalist situations you can fathom. I have a thing for these kind of movies, usually it ends with you going "Now why the hell would they do that? I would have never done blahblahblah." But most are still enjoyably stupid to watch. First the one survivalist movie that is not stupid and I wholeheartedly recommend: The Snow Walker Based on a short story by Farley Mowat, who the movie Never Cry Wolf was based on. It's about a pilot that crash lands in the artic tundra and attempts to survive and get his passenger safely back to civilization. The rest...like I said, enjoyably stupid: The Canyon A honeymooning couple decides that the best thing they could possibly do for their time is march deep into the Grand Canyon where no one can ever find them to look at some petroglyphs. Will Patton is in this as a kooky old Canyon guide and really hams it up for the majority of his screen time. Frozen Not content to wait for a better time to go snowboarding, a group gets stuck on a ski lift halfway up and attempts to figure out how to get down. Double feature by the same director: The Reef Silly people take their boat way too far out off the great barrier reef and try to swim back to an island through shark infested waters when their boat inevitably sinks. Black Water Silly people take their boat way too far out into the swamps of Australia and try to get out of the swamp when a crocodile inevitably starts munching on their bones.

I'm fairly sure Netflix downgrades the picture quality if your connection hits a bump (even temporarily, I've seen it do this mid-episode of Futurama and then bump back to HD a couple minutes later.) That said the "STARZ presents" stuff is noticeably worse quality. Speaking of which most of Futurama and the first season of Archer are streaming. And since all I've mentioned are TV shows so far, Tangled and Princess and the Frog are both up and I liked Black Death a lot. Yes, Sean Bean playing a knight, that poor typecasted man, but he's less the tortured soul type and more the zealous crusader type this time around and there's some pretty darn decent swordfighting. Oh and plague. Plague for everyone! I have some strangely varied tastes in movies ok. mistaya fucked around with this message at 08:32 on Oct 13, 2011 |

So towards the end when the #1 host is talking about how annoying the main girl they were interviewing is, the point was supposed to be that he was desperately attempting to justify just how badly he had ruined her life right? My wife asked me about 20 minutes in how the hell these women were managing to afford going to this club every night, and it was insanely depressing once that was answered.

I'm in Canada too, and signed up for netflix last month. The selection in Canada is different than the US selection, but the quality can still be the same. It depends on the device that you are using to stream, and how fast your connection is. I have a computer and my xbox hooked up to my TV, and the quality on my xbox is noticeably better. When I am using my computer to watch netflix, and I have something else downloading, the quality does drop to youtube quality, but the rest of the time its the same as watching a DVD. So you might just have a slow internet connection, or whatever built in hardware your TV has is crap.

Also the entire section after the last living knight leaves the monk back at the monastery felt unneeded. I'd recommend: Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon Its a Man Bits Dog kind of thing with a reporter following a serial killer as he sets up his backstory, stalks the "survivor girl" and rigs the killing house. It makes fun of a lot of horror tropes and its pretty cool to see the movie from the killer's angle. My only complaint with it is the end is pretty much a DTV horror movie. Leviathan Its pretty much Aliens under water, but with Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Daniel Stern, and Ernie Hudson. It was a pretty fun watch. Blitz Its pretty much an American British Cop Movie. A serial killer in London is targeting police and Jason Statham is a loose cannon detective who has to stop him. The ending made no sense to me because Carcetti chases them to the roof of a parking deck waving a gun shouting about how he'll kill him. How is that not cause to arrest him? There's been a lot mentioned in this thread that I'd second, but I'll try and post some new ones. Tell No One - Eight years ago, pediatrician Alexandre Beck (François Cluzet) was the prime suspect in his wife's murder. He's put all that behind him, but now that two dead bodies have been found near his home, he's suspected of wrongdoing once again. The case takes an unexpected turn when he receives an anonymous e-mail [redacted] instructing him to "tell no one." Kristin Scott Thomas co-stars. This one is in French, although I don't believe that would be a problem here. (My parents refuse to watch subtitles). It was a very good thriller. I left out a part of the description because I thought it wasn't necessary to spoil that part of the movie. Bronson - Nicolas Winding Refn's vivid and unflinching biopic delves into the life of Britain's most notorious prisoner, Charlie Bronson (Tom Hardy) -- who's been jailed for nearly 35 years -- and attempts to dissect the real man behind the deranged persona. While Bronson's primary ambition was to be famous, he became a celebrity of sorts as a criminal who seized myriad opportunities to demonstrate extreme and terrorizing savagery. Nicolas Refn is the guy who did Drive, and it stars Tom Hardy, whom I'm pretty sure most people here will know. It's strange and funny, definitely worth watching. Following - Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight) writes and directs this odd, claustrophobic neo-noir film about a seedy young Brit (Jeremy Theobald) who's obsessed with following people -- albeit harmlessly at first. After meeting a like-minded bloke (Alex Haw), the twosome graduate to breaking and entering -- but meet their match in a tough blonde dame (Lucy Russell) who may have dubious plans of her own. Christopher Nolan's first movie. It's not great, but it's good. AFewBricksShy fucked around with this message at 18:54 on Oct 13, 2011 |

After Issei started talking about that specific client, and how manipulative he thought she was, I absolutely saw it in her body language. Also, the most shocking revelation to me was that most of the clients are, themselves, prostitutes. I wonder if the clients see the irony that they're basically selling themselves to fund their addiction to, in a way, a kind of male prostitute

With clever ordering of the dialogue they were able to squeeze two really depressing and jaw-dropping twists out of their interview footage: #1 that most of the clients were prostitutes and #2 the clients also manipulate the hosts Much like King of Kong I started out laughing at everyone for being weird losers (how can women be so attracted to these wimpy David Bowie impersonators) but got slowly sucked into the drama.

Paranoid Park I've seen Gus Van Sant's name come up a few times in CD, and unless the poster is talking about Good Will Hunting or Milk, you folks don't seem too kind to him. He's probably my third favorite living director, behind P. T. Anderson and Scorsese, but I can certainly see why others don't like him. I've had more than one friend tell me Last Days was the worst film they'd ever seen after I showed it to them. Anyway, if you're a Van Sant hater, this film will do absolutely nothing to change your mind, because it's him at his most idiosyncratic and hyperbolic. The actors are varying degrees of terrible. Some of the dialogue is downright silly. And the pacing is glacial, even for an 85-minute film. Oh, and did I tell you it's based on a young adult novel? If that didn't turn you off entirely, there's a beautiful and haunting film under the surface here. It's a slow-burn thriller about a teenage skateboarder who accidentally murders a security guard and the resulting, well, paranoia revolving around the incident. Shot by the incomparable Christopher Doyle, the 35mm grain amplifies the moodiness of downtown Portland's cold blues and steely grays. Luckily for you, the film is in HD on Netflix. The most impressive cinematography comes from the Super-8 videos of skaters at the titular skatepark itself, with the HD transfer giving them a hazy, dream-like quality. Paranoid Park is a deceptively simple film that continues to challenge me with every viewing. It touches a whole other side of adolescence than we're used to seeing from mainstream "coming-of-age" films, yet one that feels entirely real. dreadnought fucked around with this message at 05:15 on Oct 14, 2011 |

Also, maybe your TV needs a firmware update? Don't know, the former is more likely. But that's a recent thing and hasn't popped up before this month so maybe they just have more subscribers these days? As for the quality of the HD, when it works? Honestly, as a tech-head audio-video-phile type (i.e. super-picky) it's literally as good as a DVD. I've even done side-by-side comparisons with DVDs I own, and at its best it's drat near indistinguishable. However, if you own a PS3, I'd say that is the definitive way to use Netflix, because unlike your PC's internet browser, the PS3 application also provides some titles in 5.1 as well, and again the quality compared to a disc is impressive. Combine that with the HD and really, no bonus features aside it's a perfect substitute for a disc. And since I brought up both the PS3 and A/V comparions: yes, Blu-Ray *IS* that good, even on a sub-par monitor or TV. The detail is outstanding when done right and the sound (with a decent setup) does have more punch.

It's October, time to watch scary movies, so I recommend this gem The Burning (1981) This is a movie that was described to me as the best Friday the 13th movie that isn't called Friday the 13th, and I'd agree. It follows the Friday formula pretty close, although it tries some unique things with it's bad guy and his choice of weapons. A man burned by the kids at the summer camp he works at takes out his revenge the only way a demented monster can. The movie's main star is the gore and makeup by Tom Savini and it showcases how drat mean he could be in his heyday. The script, interestingly, is written in part by Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Yes, those guys, now famous for pimping the hell out of Oscar bait films, wrote this little gory slasher.
