People like that probably like characters like Sephiroth because they're so bland that they act as a blank slate upon which they can project. Seriously the big thing I see in common with the characters people get fixated like this on is that they completely lack any kind of characterization beyond the very bare essentials (is pretty, is A Bad Guy), making them suited to the build-your-own-fantasy scenario.
