Nice OP! Was toying with doing something similar for a while, but was intimidated by the vast amount of ground that needed to be covered.

Is it ok to post favourites/recommendations in the thread? It's not as if SA is exactly overflowing with Jazz fans and posts in the general threads have a tendency to get lost pretty quick.

I've only ever heard Filmworks XIV, what more of his stuff would you recommend?

I like his Masada work best, here's the first part of a track; with the awesome Marc Ribot on guitar.

I don't mind. That's exactly what we need to keep the discussion going. Kind of sad that there aren't a lot of jazz fans around here, though.

Probably old hat to most people here, but if you haven't heard of them you have to listen to Soil & Pimp Sessions, a super energetic Japanese club band.

e: And while I'm recommending things, here's Khan Jamal master of the vibes, an instrument I've always hated since seeing some lovely blowhard play terrible muzak bullshit years ago in some club. I no longer hate vibes.

Hey Pas2, where's good place to start with Charlie Mingus? Really dug that tune you posted earlier.

The only thing I have at the moment is some Mingus Big Band live records, which are really great.

I posted this in the recommendation thread, but I'm thinking I'll have more luck here.

.... I've always been interested in the fretless bass (at least I think its a fretless bass) since I first heard it on the soundtrack for some Wong Kar Wai film.

The only example I have to hand is the beginning of this Pat Metheny song;

Preferably something Jazz and sparse, that'd be cool.

Also some dudes making a biopic of Miles

I think it's gonna star Don Cheadle, which wouldn't be a bad piece of casting at all.

BeigeJacket, are you looking for a jazz player who rocks cocks on the fretless? If so, look no further than Jaco Pastorius. The man popped off the frets on his own Fender Jazz Bass. His music veils his rather tumultuous life which tragically ended as a result of a bar fight. Still his contributions on the low-end are incredibly important with jazz-fusion group Weather Report. However, if you are looking for something a little more sparse, I know Jaco has done a myriad of recordings with John Scofield and a drummer whose name escapes me...the recordings are totally funky and feature the signature smooth bass licks of Jaco, and Scofields interesting guitar tones and nasty soloing.

I tried the odd Jaco tune before, but haven't found anything that grabbed me yet.

Here's the tune from Chungking Express I was thinking of; the kinda bass I'm gabbing about comes in at 0:28.

In the ways of modern jazz what is everybody listening to? Personally I've been listening to a lot of Sao Paulo

If you'll permit me to use a rather loose definition of modern, I've been listening to John Lurie all day long, and it's been great.

For request; someone learn me on Electro Jazz, a genre I know nothing about. What would you recommend that's heavier on the jazz-side than it is the electro?

I love Jarrett and all, especially when he's being super-melodic but the sperglord grunting and groaning really is quite off-putting.

Can anyone suggest bands that do similar music but with vocals maybe?

Early 70s Donald Byrd might do it for you; although these records lean more towards soul than flat out funk.

Sonny Rollins with Bagpipes!

e: I don't know that much about Rollins actually. Does he always begin his tunes with those long, unaccompanied solos before the rest of the band joins in?

I figured I'd forgo the Recommendation thread and see if my request would gain more traction here.

Can anyone recommend me some dark/moody/foreboding/spooky jazz similar to the song Sycamore Trees?

It can be subtle and smooth or crazy and erratic. I'm literally up for anything.

Bohren & der club of gore do nothing but creepy, lynchian doom-jazz.
