I'm going through and looking at a lot of keywords. Primarily I'm looking for low competition with 300k monthly hits and $1+ cpc (or a lot more). Am I hunting around the right region or am I a bit out?

Are you using Google Keyword Tool? If you're seeing 300K I'm guessing you're not using exact match? Uncheck Broad on the left sidebar under match type and use [Exact] instead.

Google keyword tool is useful, but you really need to go and actually look at the first page of the Google results for whatever the keyword is and see what kind of chance you have of getting there. This is a half decent guide on analyzing the first page of Google to see what your chances are, but if you're willing to put more work in, more competition for the first page is acceptable.

I'll check broad if I haven't already. I've been clicking on specific combinations of keywords to see what's on the first page. I'm looking to avoid anything that'll be too tough to compete with.

The ones with 300k are the best I've been finding the worse are on the other end with hundreds or thousands of global searches per month.

e: My bandwidth speed is capped at the moment but using exact is very refined. Thanks. Still getting combinations with hundreds of thousands of global searches, just exact.

I think I'm wrapping my head around this a lot better now. I just need to find something that I'm confident that I can maintain interest in.

I really enjoy working on seasonal blogs because I have such a short attention span, it's easier for me to really crank out some content for 2 or 3 weeks and get a big pop before working on the next site. I have a Superbowl related one as well that I'll be working on come January.

This is a good idea, I've been mulling over the idea of doing a deal blog for a while now, but honestly it seems like too much work for me. Last year I played around with amazon affiliate links and made like $200 for doing next to nothing, it was pretty awesome. Unfortunately other affiliate sites require a website, so that looks like my next step, I guess.

I have a reasonable idea, I just need to follow through with it. I don't think a blogger template is going to be good enough for this one, and I've been out of the web design thing for quite some time. So - bleh.

Get your own domain + hosting and install wordpress! You don't need to do any web design, just use wordpress and follow the instructions in the first post and you will be set.

The blog I posted earlier is sitting at #11 now in Google for my main keyword (angelfish facts). Just need to get a few more good backlinks and I'll get to the top of the front page!

My car blog was chugging along at about 500 hits a day, but with the the official announcement of the car yesterday, traffic has spiked by more than 300%! No new links coming in, no new keywords, just suddenly there were thousands of people searching for the same thing instead of just hundreds. Pretty amazing how owning a certain set of keywords basically gives you a net to catch any huge groups of fish that suddenly come along.

Also updated the OP with more blog links and advice from this thread.

Strippers are people too!

So there are a couple of monetized blogs I have wanted to start for a long time, that I think would generate interest, and upon googling there isnt currently much like it.

My question for blog goons is why dont you do both PPC and Affiliate marketing on your blogs? Seems like having google adsense up and a link to the product you are talking about on amazon wouldnt be too invasive or look too spammy if done right, and it would double your income.

I'm sure there is a reason everyone isnt doing this, but I'd like to know what it is.

Is it assumed that we are all linking to each other or is there a reason why we shouldn't? I got in on the porn blogs in like 2006 and made some cash and we had a big link circle which was awesome cause it shot our PR from 0 to at least a 3 or 4 which helped getting link backs from other, more established, sites. Maybe times have changed and having a bunch of lower level sites linking to each other hurts instead of helps?

So let me know and I'll get everyone's link on a review blog that I'm working on. If I can get this in the OP that'd be great. -Kitchen Appliance Reviews- This will be my main blog because I can actually generate revenue from it.

Edit: If we do a link circle maybe we can update the OP with anchor text that'd we'd prefer?

I've been using an ad on my front page since the start of the month. It's made me about 2 dollars, while my affiliate links have made me a little more than 300. So for me at least, it's not really worth it. I'm probably going to replace it with an ad from my affiliate.

I'm sure I could be doing things better as far as the ads go, but I doubt I would be making anything close to that 300.

So this may be more obvious than I am making it, but I just started up my blog a week or two ago and I'm still pretty clueless. I only have a few blog entries, but all of a sudden I have all these people who are obviously commenting to get their stuff backlinked. Formulaic responses with a link to their blog in it. At first I was like well at least SOMEBODY is looking at my blog but...well I'm wondering if I should approve these comments or delete them.

Are you using a wordpress install? Do you have the Askimet plugin? That should catch most of the comment spam (I don't know what blogger or wordpress.com uses) Much of what I've seen lately are generic complements about how awesome your writing is by free-dog-credit-scores.com or some other junk name, but askimet sweeps that all away so I only check for laughs at the random text. If you're unsure, it's probably spam.

Never approve them. They are either a bot, or people in 3rd world countries commenting to get backlinks for someone else's site. Also, if you're using wordpress install Akismet, it should help catch most of those comment spam replies.

It usually doesn't hurt to start as soon as possible, unless you think your readers would be disgusted by the presence of affiliate links and instantly close the window (most people don't even notice them if they're well-implemented). There's a free plugin for Wordpress called Pretty Link that lets you easily rename your links. So instead of https://www.amazon.com/234234/?=2349871234/alksdjf982j34, you can make the link something like https://www.yoursite.com/product.

I read a post by a guy who had just started his blog and hadn't put any affiliate links or ads on it, though he was planning to later. One of his posts got picked up by a guy with a huge Twitter following and it drove a ton of traffic to his site, but since he had failed to monetize it, he didn't benefit much from it. The lesson is, if you're planning on monetizing, do it as soon as possible unless you think it's important to build up readership before you put ads on the site. Most people really don't care about ads though as long as they're not excessive and they don't "impact the user experience," as Google would say.

This is great advice. I follow this thread like crazy now. One thing I'm having trouble with is finding other sites to trade links with, do guest blogging on, and over all to help promote with. How do you find ways to get your links out there? This question is intended for everyone, not just automatic.

Honestly, find people in your niche and just email them. It is like cold calling in sales- same concept but a little easier. Search similar terms in google and find people who are succeeding and see if they will trade.

In the porn-blog business people were very arrogant and didn't want to trade very often. Maybe I'll have better luck in this field.

All this talk of affiliate links has inspired me to add a widget to the bottom of my upcoming crafting posts on Brownie Bites.

I'm thinking about grouping together supplies needed to complete the project so that readers can get what they need all at once. I'm planning on having several posts go live next week using the widgets so I'll post about my results once I have some numbers!

Also, I know this is a hard question to answer, but does anyone know how long it takes Google to spider a site? My Pixel Tips blog has only been live for about 12 days, but Yahoo seems to have already picked it up. Just wanted to make sure I didn't have anything that was making Google shy away from including it in the index. :ohdear:

Wordpress is free and is really easy to install from cpanel. Cpanel will even make it really easy to create yourself an email. I don't think the blog will cost you anything but time. However, I'm new to this so don't take my word for it.

Oh I'm fine with Wordpress, I use it daily - it's the hosting side of things I'm not cluey with. Ie space needed, which plan suits most blogs, any other features I'll need to purchase to ensure smooth sailing. Hence asking which plans with Lithium other goons are on to host their blogs.

Up until now a friend has been handling the hosting and setup but it's time to branch out..

I use the cheapest option at Lithium, $10 for a year I think, and I've never had any problems. Make sure to sign up with the goon discount though, because I don't think you can add more than one domain to that plan if you don't use the goon discount.

I use Dreamhost for domain registrations though, mainly because they offer free Whois protection.

Of course I was going to do a specific-topic blog first to see how that goes, but of course I jumped right in to doing a "deal blog". I'm not sure that it's going to be even remotely successful, but whatever. Once you have a taste of the sweet sweet affiliate marketing you don't want to go back.

I'm to the point where I want to start changing some design elements of the templates and that means probably switching my templates and having to edit the PHP/CSS manually. And mehhhhhhh, lazy!

I second Scotsman's advice to blog about what you want or what interests you. Keeping a blog loaded with fresh, new content can be a hell of a commitment.
