Does anyone use any tools for finding a niche? It'd be awesome if there was some sort of tool that allowed you to type in a search term and it would show the top ten results (first page of google.) Then scour the web for back links, page rank, etc... Then you'd know what your competition is. I'm sure, being the newbie that I am, that I am not the first person that has thought of this. Does anyone know of a tool like this?

So my Black Friday blog did way better than last year. I ranked #1 for my specific niche. In the 2 weeks leading to Black Friday.   Also add an additional $500 from CPA offers and $300 from Amazon sales. I had to buy a new VPS service because my shared hosting had 100% CPU usage for 24 hours and had collapsed from increased traffic. A great success but probably not something I could replicate monthly. Hopefully my Super Bowl blog can get 1/4 of the same results.

Do you focus on adsense or is the money from adsense just that much better than Amazon? I would have thought that affiliate links would be the way to go for something like black friday.

Next year I will probably try and incorporate some more Amazon posts though. A single post on the site about a TV deal netted me about 50 sales in that 2 week period with banners scooping up the extra 31 sales.

I have a homebrew blog that I write as a hobby. I recently redesigned it and need to step up and keep writing more. http://www.onegallonhomebrew.com I'm trying to monetize it a bit more and I'd like to put a CPM banner on there. That means I get paid a small amount per impression, right? I'm starting to generate some bigger traffic numbers from stumbledupon and a lot from search engines - this has generated some Amazon affiliate monies (although not enough for them to send me a check yet). Despite not touching the site since September, it has probably gained 50% more unique views every month. I'm hoping that more content and promotion and link building will take it to the next level and make this an legit small source of income that can help fund my hobby, if nothing else. You have to get to level two in order to be able to put a link into the post, so if you answer some questions and make sure they're quality, they'll almost always get voted best answer and that will really help you get to level two very quickly. Don't just do a huge back link campaign on Yahoo though.

I don't think there's an exact answer for how many ads is too many, as it depends on how much content you have, how your design is laid out, what kind of ads they are, and what kind of users you have. AdSense limits you to 3 ad units (and 3 link unites) and I would say that is a pretty good limit per page. 1 header, 1 sidebar/in-page, 1 footer. If you're just trying to gain a readership, I would say 2 large ads per page is the most, but if you're already got a large following then you can push that number higher. The best way to find out your limit it to just experiment. Check your numbers, put one more ad on there and see if your bounce rate goes up or if you get any negative responses.

The domain name that matches a specific phrase, such as "best-cable-tv-alternative.com" with very little SEO will always rank higher than a site with much more SEO and a lot more back links. However, they're sometimes harder to remember. I bought Top Ten Smartest Dogs.com because it is a phrase that gets a lot of searches and very little competition. I figured I'd rather rank higher for that phrase than fight for some other phrase with equally as many results. However, it's harder to remember. That's the downside. My plan, however, is to rely on social networking to keep people reading, keep them informed, and to keep myself relevant. Instead of buying followers and likes, I'll seek out a targeted group of people and hopefully at least keep a click or two here and there before I get a lot of pages indexed. But yeah, to answer your question, I'd say whatever is more important to you. Personally, I'd rather have a .com TLD that matches a keyword that I'm targeting than something easier to remember.

I notice all his examples of more abstract domains are basically web services, not single-topic blogs. What he doesn't really explain is whether you really see much of a boost in SEO with one type versus the other. However, one of the commenters pointed out that low-content gateway pages are still ranking highly. He explains it well in an abstract pie-in-the-sky fantasy sense without consideration for whether you're talking about a blog or information page, or web service. But I think I did get the answer I was looking for (keywords in the domain...maybe if I get traffic later I'll go with a different clever domain and set up a "we've moved" gateway at the old URL), so thanks.

Google Analytics is not working on my site. I've had it up for several days and despite my site being on the front page of several popular subreddits, having 10 or so comments that aren't spam, and a visitor counter i've been running for 24 hours saying I've had over 200 unique views GA is saying I've never had a single view. Anyone know what could be up?

So would a blog rating DVD rippers be considered "Any other content that is illegal, promotes illegal activity or infringes on the legal rights of others." I went through a huge hassle earlier this year getting my legal DVD library ripped and added to my computer for Xbox streaming. Id like to make an info blog about it, but not sure if Google would get upset.

Well, ripping a DVD in and of itself is not illegal, but breaking encryption to do so is. As long as your emphasis is on the ripping and/or compressing of the discs and not the methods of breaking encryption you should be fine. If not, there are a metric ton of CPA offers your can do for DVD ripping programs. DVD ripping is a hugely competitive niche though.

Heatmap Theme is awesome, and a bunch of the themes from https://www.newwpthemes.com have built in ad management. I still use Easy Adsense as well. It may not be the most advanced adsense plugin, but it's super easy to use, automatically inserts ads w/ wordwrap into posts and does widgets too. It will also enforce Google's 3 ad limit for you. Just make sure you uncheck the box to divert a % of impressions to the developer.
