All this talk of affiliate links has inspired me to add a widget to the bottom of my upcoming crafting posts on Brownie Bites.

I'm thinking about grouping together supplies needed to complete the project so that readers can get what they need all at once. I'm planning on having several posts go live next week using the widgets so I'll post about my results once I have some numbers!

Also, I know this is a hard question to answer, but does anyone know how long it takes Google to spider a site? My Pixel Tips blog has only been live for about 12 days, but Yahoo seems to have already picked it up. Just wanted to make sure I didn't have anything that was making Google shy away from including it in the index. :ohdear:

Have you added the site to Google Webmaster Tools? If not, do that, and then submit a sitemap.

It's best to jump in with something you want to do, even if it fails. At least you are motivated to work on it and learn while you are working on it - learning being the key thing.

You need to start working on SEO(especially changing your URLs to Search Engine Friendly URLs). Submit your site to Google/Bing Webmaster if you haven't already, install Google XML sitemap plugin.

Some Basic SEO Guidelines which will help you with the URLs, some basic Wordpress Guidelines and you might want to read the Full Guide.

(Links are to my site BTW, but it's basically a simple and easy step by step guide to take anyone from "Hey I want to be an affiliate marketer" to "holy crap I'm an affiliate marketer"). Site is geared towards gambling affiliates but 90% of the topics will apply to everyone.

Only discovered this thread today - good thread guys. I've been doing internet marketing since 1997(and for a living since 2004) so I'll be sure to chime in and help.

Just quoting in case anyone missed this, but his site has a TON of a really good info for anyone wanting to get started with blogging/affiliate marketing.

Is there anything against me starting a lot of blogs in the same type of niche? For example, I have my site Top Ten Smartest Dogs, what's to stop me from starting 10 or 20 different blogs that have to do with dog training, dog food, dog breeds, dog toys, etc... then linking them all to one another? Do people do this?

People do this, yes.

The only problem that I'm aware of is if you interlink them in an obvious way, Google might penalize you.

If you manage to get a few of your blogs on the first page for the keyword, you'll be set.

Yeah, link wheels are an old technique that I think most would advise against since Google is wise to the simple varieties.

I think what still works is a bunch web 2.0 properties that are randomly interlinked with a few pointing to your money site.

This technique is detailed in smart passive income's niche challenge from last year, which is worth reading if you want to play the niche affiliate or ppc game.

I was meaning to post that site, it's a great resource:

and the backlinking post specifically:

Sorry for the big long obtuse post before. What I wanted to ask was:

Anyone have a good resource for optimizing Adsense?

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but poke around these two sites:

I have a very noob question and I hope this is the right place for it. I've been setting my first blog up all day today (http://www.gameswecrave.net/) -- The site is hosted from my main domain (http://www.deadendcrew.net) -- The problem I'm running into is that anytime I click a link, the path changes in the address bar to reflect the full path of the site.

I know this is simple to fix, but I'm really new at this and could use the tip!

Thanks

I'm not entirely sure, but if it's a wordpress site, check the "Site Address" setting under General settings. Change it to the URL you want to show.

So, I've done some googling around, and I can't really come up with a consistent definition of "link building". What do you mean by that in general terms?

Link building is getting links from other sites back to your own site. You can go about this in a "legit" way, or by "black hat" methods.

Here's a good resource for someone just starting out:

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Barely getting a hit a week, mixture of spun content and original writing.

If you're depending on organic traffic:
"sprain relief" has less than 10 local monthly searches according to Google Keyword Tool.

How were you displaying the Amazon links?
Maybe you could have it so you can click on the name of Pokemon which would display some info along with an image of the card and other relevant products from Amazon.

So I've decided to get up off my arse and sort out some amazon stuff because my astronomy site could do quite well with putting in product links to "atlas of the sky" or "babbys first telescope" type stuff.

But immediately I'm wary of the first hurdle: do I go for associate on the amazon.com site or .co.uk (where I am)?

I know most of my traffic is going to be from the US, but the last time I checked Amazon had this godawful system where you couldnt get paid overseas without setting up a US tax number or some such thing where you had to go to the embassy to fill out forms and in general it just seemed like some massive loving hassle that didnt make it worth it as youd have to pay £200 to earn £50.

Is that still the case or have they managed to get their poo poo together?

You can get both a .com and .co.uk associates account.

I'm in Canada, Amazon.com mails me a cheque, there are no fees but there is a $100 minimum. AFAIK, direct deposit is only for US residents.
