Well I took the leap,

It's best to jump in with something you want to do, even if it fails. At least you are motivated to work on it and learn while you are working on it - learning being the key thing.

You need to start working on SEO(especially changing your URLs to Search Engine Friendly URLs). Submit your site to Google/Bing Webmaster if you haven't already, install Google XML sitemap plugin.

Some Basic SEO Guidelines which will help you with the URLs, some basic Wordpress Guidelines and you might want to read the Full Guide.

(Links are to my site BTW, but it's basically a simple and easy step by step guide to take anyone from "Hey I want to be an affiliate marketer" to "holy crap I'm an affiliate marketer"). Site is geared towards gambling affiliates but 90% of the topics will apply to everyone.

Only discovered this thread today - good thread guys. I've been doing internet marketing since 1997(and for a living since 2004) so I'll be sure to chime in and help.

Only IF top10gardengnomes.com was an already established domain/website that Google trusted, and you were forwarding that domain to bestgardengnomes.com. Otherwise it would add practically no value.

You would be much better as Moniker suggested, to purchase top10gardengnomes.com and then build a small site on it. Use that to both rank for "top 10 garden gnomes" and also pass some link juice onto "bestgardengnomes.com".

Although most importantly - focus on making bestgardengnomes.com rank for phrases like "top 10 garden gnomes". What you could do is create a sub-section of your website bestgardengnomes.com/top10gardengnomes/ and then look at that almost as a website of its own, and plan SEO separately for it.

Check when the domain expires - http://www.whois.sc - you might get lucky and will be able to snag it for reg fee. If it's coming up soon I'd just leave it and get it when it expires. If it's not for awhile - just do everything you can to contact him. But nothing you can really do until it expires.

As for price it depends largely on the niche, domain, rankings, backlink portfolio, any earnings etc. From the sounds of your post you don't think it's worth a lot but you just never know. Basically how much would you be prepared to pay for it? It just depends how badly you want a domain. I've paid $xxx-$xx,xxx more than what a domain is worth simply because I know how important the domain would have been to my motivation, brand ability etc.

Well there's a lot of factors that really come into play there. Is the site looking for great, quality writing to provide a resource for readers? Or is it more just wanting articles for SEO purposes? If it's the former you can go high, if it's the lower they're going to have a ton of uber-cheap options. Like I have no problem paying people $50-$200 for top quality articles, but I'll also pay $10(or less) for my secondary articles.

A lot of people like to base it on per word, but I always prefer hourly rate. Think about how many hours it will take you to write said article(along with any necessary research etc). Then determine what you feel is a fair rate for that.

Edit: Has anyone had any luck with Fiverr? I just posted a couple of gigs that are SEO related. I got one gig last night. To spin 4 articles for $5. It took me about 45 minutes which isn't that great, but hey, it's extra cash I guess.

I'd stay away from all the SEO stuff on Fiverr. I generally use it to get 400+ Twitter Followers/Facebook Likes etc. Not that them by themselves mean anything, but people are just more likely to "Like" a facebook page with 1500 followers compared to 12 etc.

There's a lot of gold on there, like the videos and all that that you can get done. I got this done on Fiverr:

Does the domain suffix make a significant difference when it comes to search engine ranking? The .com I'd like is being auctioned for $600 bucks, but the .ca/.net are both normal price. Would it be wiser to go with the .net or does it not matter?

It took me days of thinking to come up with a topic I'd like to write about and had the proper global/local/competition numbers. Can't wait for my enthusiasm to turn to frustration and misery in a couple weeks when I have 0 visitors.

I would always prefer the .com - potential income and whether it's a brandable site depends how much I'm willing to pay for it though. As a backup, .net and .org are completely fine.

Only buy country specific domains like .ca or .co.uk if that country/region is 100% your target market.

I've written quite a few articles that might help you out:

And I'd be focusing strongly on building up a mailing list at this point. You don't even need to use AWeber etc - FeedBurner would be sufficient.

What do you guys think?

It's completely standard and not any sort of scam or anything at all. They're just wanting to buy a link off you - they don't care how many visitors you get at all as they're not expecting anyone to actually click through - they're just link building to increase rankings for their clients.

Buying/Selling links is against Googles T&C but everyone does it. Just write the article yourself, write a relevant article and put the link in a manner that it actually looks natural and you'll be fine.

Yes I would stay away from blog automation, serving content from other websites etc etc.

Really - you WANT a site that requires a lot of updating. That is - if you want to make money. You want a site where you can sit down and come up with 100 content ideas without even doing keyword research at all.

For all you guys starting out - content rich sites, both in terms of quality and quantity, are the way to go. Most of my sites are content rich, and I launch them with about 30 articles to start with, then add a minimum of one per day.

My latest site(that I'm working on with my brother in law who is new to this so we're keeping everything super basic) is http://www.betnhl.ca - launched about 3 days prior to the NHL season starting this year. We had 20 articles upon launch, then add one article per day just for the tips of the day, then in addition to that we add more articles - usually 3-5 per week.

If you can't spare an hour a day to write for your website or work on it, or if you can't take a few hours downtime on the weekend to work on your website and its content for the next week - you really should just forget about making money online with websites.

And I mean I do this full time - but my brother in law runs his own pizza business and is crazy busy during the day etc with the business and his family. But he's always finding ways to write - be it on his iPhone during breaks or slow time, then during his off days he'll sit down and write etc. If you're really driven to make money from these sites you'll find the time.

Why Headspace SEO over WordPress SEO? The later is much better, imo. Also why the non-pretty URLs?

Now, that's not terrible, but there's no reason to have a file extension in a url anymore.

Nah it's fine. I had issues previously with /%category%/%postname%/ in regard to the SERPs and GWT was bringing up errors about seeing the posts as a category base. I added the extension and it sorted everything out. Now that was years ago and obviously isn't an issue these days, but it's a personal preference that doesn't affect anything positively or negatively.

Okay, I need some help.

I've been reviewing a TON of products lately and I'm gearing up to do a week where I do nothing but post a different review each day. That catch is that I've gotten all of the product manufacturers to agree to let me give away their product with the review.

What's the best way to do a give-away? I know that I could always do a "subscribe to the blog via email and be entered!" but I'd like to take the opportunity to increase Facebook likes and twitter follows as well as push traffic to the product's website. Obviously if a company gets a lot of pageviews/purchases it opens it up to me being able to ask them about advertising on my site, so that's really the most important part, but I get most of my traffic from social media so getting my follow/like number up is also super important.

Any ideas on how to run this thing and accomplish everything I want to do?

But if I have a handful of original content written for the site launch, is it better to just have them all published on the site when it goes live and I start submitting to search engines, promoting the content, etc? Or should I start with a couple and then stagger publication over X amount of time, promoting as I go? (Keeping in mind I'll have some Amazon Affiliate stuff within those posts). Or does it matter when just starting out with no traffic?

I generally will launch a website with 20-50 articles, and then will add 1-7 new articles every week.

It varies based on the type of website, potential income and potential quantity of content. If you can think of over 1,000 articles easily for your website for example, are confident if it ranks you can make good money, and have the time - I'd launch with 50 articles and aim to add 1 new article per day.

If you're more testing the waters and unsure - or if it's a limited niche in terms of content or if you just don't have the time - bare minimum for me would be 20 articles at launch, then 1-2 new articles per week.

In regard to design - it depends on what you are promoting. Personally I'd go with the Wordpress default theme initially and just focus on content. Too many people get caught up early on in the design stage, ad placement etc. Once you're actually getting visitors - THEN you can start thinking "Okay how do I make the most money off these people?".

Is there any point to doing a general site with products separated by category? Basically like gifts.com but smaller - or is that market so sewn up it's better to set up individual sites?

I'd say it depends on your experience. If you're really good at what you do and are 100% confident in your abilities when it comes to SEO, Conversions etc then sure go for it. But I think by posting this you're probably not at that stage yet. I'd focus on individual sites for now.

If you WERE going to go for the broader site - I'd recommend coming up with something unique. Something different to sites like Gifts.com. Something that none of those sites have that YOU have that make your site a valuable resource.
