Thanks for the replies so far, I've also had a reccomendation for Iberica on portland street and Pix in covent from the spanish people in work. ..though the thought of braving covent garden on a friday night relatively sober is kind of daunting.

You could give Morito a go in Exmouth Market, plenty of restaurants/bars around there, only downside is that there's no bookings, but they take your number and you tootle off to a nearby bar and they ring you when it's time. It was cheap, and totally delicious.

Gourmet's selection of places is pretty slim, to be honest. My mum got one and realised the only local places were Cafe Rouge and Pizza Express. You're better off getting a TasteLondon card. Much better selection and value.

Anyone have any ideas on which of the mess of restaurants on the Chiswick High street are actually any good? The Polish one I used to go to (The Knaypa) changed chefs or something, the food was no-where near as good as the times I went before.

Ok so I promised 5 pages back to write about stuff, so here is my recent eats list, have been done all in the last month or two; http://burgerandlobster.com/ Burger and Lobster is a mad, hugely popular restaurant in Mayfair that does a burger, chips and salad, a lobster roll, chips and salad or a whole lobster (grilled or steamed with butter or lemon and herb butter) chips and salad for only £20. Cocktails and no booking means you need to get there early, stick your name on the list and either fight your way to the bar or disappear elsewhere. We went to Claridges (10 minutes walk, with a friend in heels!) to drink Brook Street's and dream of what was to come. Amazing value, perfectly cooked and the chips and salad didn't disappoint, we had two lobsters and I will definitely be back. http://cevicheuk.com/ Cerviche is a Peruvian bar and kitchen in Soho with lots of lime marinated fish and some yummy corn based dishes. Good for the whole small plates vibe, many have commented that the dishes are expensive for their size but I thought it wasn't bad value. Pisco sours are the house drink, I had a good glass of pinot noir. Following this we headed to our usual dessert spot, Gelupo (http://www.gelupo.com/) in Soho for gelato and espresso. Hay and salted caramel were my choices, but as ever they had around 15 different gelato, sorbet and granita flavours and they are always good. Whilst I am here I will have to shout out for Bocca Di Lupo (http://www.boccadilupo.com/), a fantastic Italian. I succumbed to the hype and went for a quick bite on a Wednesday afternoon. Burger was good, onion rings were nice, and an old fashioned was ok, £19 with service for that felt steep. I think I would have been disappointed if I had queued for ages in the evening but it was a good burger. Its been a good couple of months eating and I am now looking for a recommendation for a Korean place, BBQ would be good, but easy to get to from West/Central London is a must. Cheaper is better but will pay for quality. Any suggestions?

Went to Frankies about 5 years ago and didn't think it was up to much, but perhaps it has improved over the years.

Seconding Han Kang - very central and pretty delicious. I also LOVE Seoul in Finchley Road and bang on about it all the time in this thread. The staff brought a bunch of us loads of free tasty treats, the entire BBQ menu is perpetually set to 50% off, and the food was absolutely wonderful. It's a bit out of the way but the overground runs to Finchley and Frognall and it's a short walk from there.  This thread needs more pictures of tasty-looking food!

Where on earth is all the cheap greasy Mexican food over here? I heard there was a taco bell somewhere in England but apparently in Manchester. Ah, you want American Mexican which doesn't really exist over here. I lived in the US for 5 years and I miss my Taco Bell infusions, so I know how you feel. There's a TB waaaay the gently caress out at Lakeside, which seems a particularly daft place for it. There's also a Chipotle on Charing Cross Rd which offers a decent fast foody burrito, if not exactly how Chipotle do it back in the US (refried beans! It needs them!).

Yeah, the Chipotle is a sad shadow of its American siblings. But that's the problem, aside from that and the couple of Taco bells that have turned up like some staggeringly lost tourists, the tex-mex you and I want just isn't here. Not even just crappy copies, it barely exists in the first place. Of course, London being the great gastronomic city it is, you can get proper real Mexican at places like Wahaca, but not the pale imitation you actually desire.

I would just like to thank the Londoners in this thread for their dedication to sussing out the best places to eat. I have a one-day conference coming up at UCL in May, and I intend to make good on the day I have before it to go to (at the very least) Wahaca. Been looking for good Mexican forever, and the only thing that has kinda-sorta come close has been Bodega in Birmingham. That being said, their ropa vieja is much better than anything 'Mexican' they produce.

Meat Liquor does a good Philly Cheesesteak, but the queue can be brutal. Burritos are absolutely bloody everywhere in London now, with my pick of the bunch being Benitos hat and Picante in victoria, the latter run by an expat californian who knows his stuff. Never did get to any of those tapas places yet, though thanks for the reccomendation, girlfriend 'forgot' about her lactose intolerance and had a cheese sandwich at lunch, results less than pretty.

Anyone been to Mestizo in Angel recently? I went there 2 years ago and it was loving stellar Mexican food. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but the flavours were spot on. Also, their tequila list is probably second to none in London.

We knew it wouldn't be great but it was much much worse the what you could do at home with an old el paso kit
