It's not steak tartare but the yuke (Korean-style steak tartare - so raw beef + egg) in Seoul on Finchley Road is AMAZING. I had dreams about it afterwards. It's slivers of raw beef, raw egg, pear and sesame oil and it is so, loving, delicious.

You're right yuke isn't steak tartare. It's good, sure, but I'm craving meat, onion, capers and raw egg yolk.

The Wolseley and the Delaunay both have it in a small and large portion. Not had it, but if the rest of the menu is anything to go by then it will be excellent and very much the real deal. Their holstein schnitzels are also very good.

Bob Bob Ricard had venison steak tartare, one with caviar, one without, both with quails eggs, if you in the mood for a change.

p.s you should never need to go to Paris, London has it all covered *prepares to be corrected*

Lol serves them right. I actually laboured on the building site and they threw out an almost new dumb waitor because they wanted a new one. It was a present for the daughter who had never run a restaurant before but the food was nice at least

You could give Morito a go in Exmouth Market, plenty of restaurants/bars around there, only downside is that there's no bookings, but they take your number and you tootle off to a nearby bar and they ring you when it's time. It was cheap, and totally delicious.

For those of you who are in Crouch End/Hornsey/Finsbury Park there is an AWESOME Thai place on Hornsey High Street called Thai Neung. Some of the best Thai I've ever had. The restaurant itself isn't much to write home about but delivery is all good.

We ordered from them on Monday. Either they were having a bad night or you don't know poo poo about food. Vegetable dumplings were fine, and had a very good ginger sauce. The pad thai was far too sweet (and I really like sweetness), and had no contrasting sour or acidic elements to balance it - just sweetness. This contrasted with the ginger mushroom stirfry, which was almost inedibly salty (and again, I like salty, and usually add salt to food, but this was gross). The green curry had a good flavour, which was aided by the lovely hairs I found in it (see pics below). We accidentally ordered two green curries, and had leftovers from the pad thai and stirfry, which was fine as we thought we'd have leftovers the next night, but it all went in the bin. I was disgusted. It was really loving bad. I am going to complain, but I don't want a free meal, as I never want food from there again.

Gourmet's selection of places is pretty slim, to be honest. My mum got one and realised the only local places were Cafe Rouge and Pizza Express.

You're better off getting a TasteLondon card. Much better selection and value.

Okay, am totally avoiding that Thai place now :psyduck:

In other news, :siren: VEGETARIAN FOOD :siren: apparently very nice in this place Orchard, in Holborn.

quote:

You'll rapidly notice, however, if you pay attention to that bowl of soup, that there's a lot more cooking going on than you might expect. The ingredients are listed as potato and parsley, but that makes it sound plainer than it is, with the potato tasting rich and creamy, and the wonderfully lavish parsley playing a leading role – more dishes should use parsley as their star. On the side was the daily selection of three salads: red onion with sultanas and a sweet vinaigrette; pickled heritage potatoes; and cool, crunchy batonettes of kohlrabi and celery. The potato was genuinely interesting, not least because "heritage", a silly word, turns out here to mean "a weird shade of blue". The spuds were tangy and cooked to just the right degree of yielding resistance (I mention that because restaurant potatoes are often overboiled). A main course dish of savoy cabbage came wrapped around a savoury filling of milk-soaked bread and cheddar, with blue spuds on the side, a red wine reduction and a celeriac purée. This was a very happy plateful, the cheese and potato and celeriac both hearty and subtly various – a meat-eater's idea of veggie food, maybe, but that was part of the reason I liked it.

Ok so I promised 5 pages back to write about stuff, so here is my recent eats list, have been done all in the last month or two;

http://burgerandlobster.com/ Burger and Lobster is a mad, hugely popular restaurant in Mayfair that does a burger, chips and salad, a lobster roll, chips and salad or a whole lobster (grilled or steamed with butter or lemon and herb butter) chips and salad for only £20. Cocktails and no booking means you need to get there early, stick your name on the list and either fight your way to the bar or disappear elsewhere. We went to Claridges (10 minutes walk, with a friend in heels!) to drink Brook Street's and dream of what was to come. Amazing value, perfectly cooked and the chips and salad didn't disappoint, we had two lobsters and I will definitely be back.

http://cevicheuk.com/ Cerviche is a Peruvian bar and kitchen in Soho with lots of lime marinated fish and some yummy corn based dishes. Good for the whole small plates vibe, many have commented that the dishes are expensive for their size but I thought it wasn't bad value. Pisco sours are the house drink, I had a good glass of pinot noir.

Following this we headed to our usual dessert spot, Gelupo (http://www.gelupo.com/) in Soho for gelato and espresso. Hay and salted caramel were my choices, but as ever they had around 15 different gelato, sorbet and granita flavours and they are always good. Whilst I am here I will have to shout out for Bocca Di Lupo (http://www.boccadilupo.com/), a fantastic Italian. All I can say is sit in front of the chefs (ask when you book!) and you will have an amazing meal.

http://www.roganic.co.uk/Roganic/Welcome.html Roganic was this months treat and boy did it not disappoint. 10 Courses plus amuses, pre desserts, cheese and some amazing bread (with whipped butter). Highlights were the bread, a King Oyster mushroom that tasted better than a steak at any gastro pub, a razor clam dish in the richest stock I have ever had and a carrot sorbet dessert that was very refreshing. Brilliant service and a relaxed atmosphere lead to a very, very good evening. Highly recommended

http://www.thedelaunay.com/ The Delaunay is the sister to The Wolseley, an all day dining grand cafe. Simple food and real buzz. Good for a decent pre theatre meal.

http://charlottes.co.uk/bistro/ Charlottes Bistro, Chiswick. Went back here after reading about the lunch offer they have. I will let the Critical Couple tell you about it, I had the vacherin fondant and the gilt head bream and I can confirm that this is the most fantastic deal, £12.95 for 2 courses, £15.95 for 3, all from the full sized portion a la carte. http://www.thecriticalcouple.com/1/post/2012/03/charlottes-bistro-the-uks-best-lunch-deal-possibly.html

http://www.mirchmasalarestaurant.co.uk/ the Mirch Masala is my local version of Tayyabs, good value, brilliant lamb chops and perfect veg curries. 7 Branches, Southall is my local.

http://www.bodeansbbq.com/ Bodeans. BBQ meat, classy it is not but the bbq is as good as it gets in London, 4 branches around town.

http://francomanca.co.uk/ Franco Manca. London's best pizza, cheaper than any of the chains, how can you love it. Only problem is Pizza Express, Zizzi, Ask, Pizza Hut etc pale in comparison and it pains me if someone suggests going there.

http://www.zuccalondon.com/ Zucca. Great Italian, like a cheap River Cafe, 3 courses, plenty of wine and a healthy tip it was only £80 for two, great value for the cooking standard.

http://www.meatliquor.com/ Meat Liquor. I succumbed to the hype and went for a quick bite on a Wednesday afternoon. Burger was good, onion rings were nice, and an old fashioned was ok, £19 with service for that felt steep. I think I would have been disappointed if I had queued for ages in the evening but it was a good burger.

Its been a good couple of months eating and I am now looking for a recommendation for a Korean place, BBQ would be good, but easy to get to from West/Central London is a must. Cheaper is better but will pay for quality. Any suggestions?

Seconding Han Kang - very central and pretty delicious.

I also LOVE Seoul in Finchley Road and bang on about it all the time in this thread. The staff brought a bunch of us loads of free tasty treats, the entire BBQ menu is perpetually set to 50% off, and the food was absolutely wonderful. There's a TB waaaay the gently caress out at Lakeside, which seems a particularly daft place for it. There's also a Chipotle on Charing Cross Rd which offers a decent fast foody burrito, if not exactly how Chipotle do it back in the US (refried beans! It needs them!).

Yeah, the Chipotle is a sad shadow of its American siblings. But that's the problem, aside from that and the couple of Taco bells that have turned up like some staggeringly lost tourists, the tex-mex you and I want just isn't here. Not even just crappy copies, it barely exists in the first place.

Of course, London being the great gastronomic city it is, you can get proper real Mexican at places like Wahaca, but not the pale imitation you actually desire.

Burritos are absolutely bloody everywhere in London now, with my pick of the bunch being Benitos hat and Picante in victoria, the latter run by an expat californian who knows his stuff.
