Went to Roganic yesterday for the 10 course tasting menu, definitely worth a trip. Was worth it for the coal infused oil alone, but the whole experience was just fantastic, including the fact that they told us that when we arrived one of the waiters told our waiter 'They looks nice, lets get them drunk and make them spend their whole Saturday here'

Which is just what happened...mostly due to the fantastic array of wines and the suggested pairings, but also that they ended up giving us 2 glasses of each wine for the price of one (around £6 per glass) due to topping up throughout the meal.
I just had a look at the website - £80 for ten courses sounds doable, but how does the wine happen? Can you get it matched to the courses with a flat fee or do you have to pay per glass?

Went to 10 Greek Street for the fourth time on Saturday. It's consistently good food, prices aren't too high (75 quid for dinner for two including a 25 pound bottle of wine). I definitely recommend eating at the bar - you can watch over the kitchen and see what's going on while you eat.

Oh my god yes! Their baklava counter is like something out of a fantasy. Every time I walk past I can't help doing this dreamy drooly sigh. I also really like the hippy supermarket- Whole Earth? A lot of the stuff they sell is actually a very reasonable price, including their loose grains and teas, and the staff have never been snobby at me.
Arancini Factory is my other favourite spot; it's just a perfect little café, although too pricey for my student budget. They have the kind of antipodean waitresses that jump into your conversation while they serve you, which I actually quite like because it reminds you that everyone can hear your loud public conversation.

I don't like the butchers on Kentish Town Road though, the guy in there last time I went was just really half assed and didn't seem to care about what he was selling me. Maybe I'm a primadonna but when I walk into an empty butchers and say "Hi, I'm cooking a chicken dinner for 5 people tonight, what have you got?" I expect some kind of conversation along the lines of "this one is free range, this one is just a standard chicken, this one is extra large" not just a hand wave at the counter.

I still haven't been to Chicken Shop which I'm really looking forward to - last time I tried to go it was a Sunday and they were shut.
Never been to Arancini factory, but it's on the list of stuff to try when I get around to it. I'm further up towards the station so it's a little out of the way compared to, say, the kebab shop, so it always comes second choice.

As for that butchers... The last and only time (for a while) that I went in there I looked at a chicken, bought it, and then realised I had just agreed to pay £16 for a chicken.

Tried out the new Pizza East up the road in Kentish Town with my sister. Last time I went was in Shoreditch in early 2009 and I wasn't impressed - tiny portions, and not very flavoursome. This one has a different menu, and I was much happier this time with the size and taste of the pizzas - lovely crust. (I had anchovies and capers, she had proscuitto and ricotta I forgot the name of. )

edit: :siren: 50% off ramen for the soft launch ( 7/11 - 17/11) at Shoryu Ramen on Regent Street, 11am-7pm . Looks good!

Every time I've made the trip up there (ok it's under 10 mins walk from home...) I've either been lured away by Chicken Shop or dirty burger, I'm still to try a pizza. Will give it a go next time though.

Thanks for the ramen tip, just about close enough to my office to visit over lunch.

Pollen St Social was just great. Food was very good to fantastic (taster menu), wines were brilliant, cocktails were exciting and a cut above most restaurant bars and service was lovely. They even gave me a piece of cake to take away as it was my birthday.
The oyster icecream by itself is unpleasant, but when I tried it with the wine the sommelier suggested it turned delicious and interesting. Cooked breakfast was one of the things I was looking forward to and it lived up to my expectations, full of flavour. The other highlight I think was how enthusiastic the sommelier was, she really nailed the pairings while still giving us options at every stage, and the wines had flavours that I never had before (especially a smokey white wine). We asked her to write down the pairings at the end of the meal so we could remember what we had and she was delighted that we wanted to learn more.

I went to Lemonia in Primrose Hill last weekend. I had heard a lot of hype about it, and we have a family friend who has known the owner for years, so it was a nice experience. Everything tasted good, the dolmades were some of the best I've ever had, and my lamb kleftiko was tender and delicious.

I was told beforehand it is not haute cuisine; it is simple traditional fare, but done right. Which, I have to admit, it is. But the prices are outrageous for the type of food it is. You pay around £15 for just your meat main with no sides - it's £3-6 per side dish, which are also plain things like roast potatoes with minimal seasoning.

I guess they can get away with their prices because the place is always full, but coming from Canada originally all I could think was that those price tags would be found on well-aged filet mignon dinners at upscale steak houses.

I'm not sure where you're eating your well-aged filet mignon but I certainly don't know where I can get one for £15. Welcome to London dining.

Marylebone Farmers Market runs on weekends. You can guess the nearest station for that.

Greenwich Market has some fantastic food stalls, and you can get the river taxi down there which is a wonderful way of seeing London too. Closest station is Cutty Sark on the DLR.

This place near Finsbury Park thinks it’s Indian food. It’s not. There is a serious lack of curry. One friend had very plain chicken and I had some Lamb meatloaf (looked like poop) that was closer to Turkish food than Indian. It wasn’t on the menu so I took my chances and asked the waitress if they had a mango lassi. She gave me this look like ‘gently caress you, what are you even talking about?’ Pricey and not worth it. Not even Indian food. Avoid.

This fast food chain is kind of a cheap halal competitor to KFC I guess. There’s a big menu and the chicken was cooked to perfection. I’m sure anyone from London is laughing at me for even putting this here but if you’re in the mood for a cheap meal, like fried chicken, and there’s one of these around, you could do a lot worse.
It's a chicken shop, right? Like, the ones on every street corner?

What annoys me about the New American Renaissance we're going through over here is that the food we're all going gaga over is essentially cheap diner food.

This is chicken & waffles I had in Louisiana:

That's 3 large pieces of fantastic fried chicken, 1 big waffle, syrup, butter, and hot sauce. It cost me $7.49 and was really, really good.

Last night I went to Stax Diner to try the chicken and waffles there. It was 2 boneless chicken strips on a waffle with syrup and cost £12.75. No butter. The chicken batter was unseasoned and not particularly large. The waffle was soggy. I felt like I had been robbed, honestly.

We're paying through the nose for what is ordinarily cheap food, but because of the cachet behind it, are happily forking out for the novelty, regardless of whether it's any good or not.

Did you complain about it? I certainly would have. Otherwise how do they know that they're serving substandard food?
