I'm back in London after a 2 year stint in sub-Saharan Africa.

I have a list of things I need to eat/drink, but I'm looking for great set menu lunch deals that have vegetarian options. Any suggestions?

P.S. Xarr, thanks for the cocktail bar list. I will be checking out Nightjar and Claridges Bar very soon. I'll pm you when I go. I owe you a drink.

I'm not working at the moment, so proper courses would be best.

Almost completely by accident I had dinner at Midred's last night. Fan-loving-tastic.

Trip Report: Nightjar

On Friday, I went to check out Nightjar, having heard awesome things. It was absolutely incredible. We got seated at a tiny table right next to the stage. There was a pretty cool band playing. There was a tap dance battle. It was EPIC.
Here's the cocktail list:
http://www.barnightjar.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/SUMMER-MENU.pdf

Here's a list of what I drank:
Pre-Prohibition: Bobby Burns
Prohibition: Remember the Maine, Scoff Law
Post-War: The Wibble
Nightjar Signature: Brick Lane Cocktail

It took all of my strength not to pay the bartender £120 to make me a Sazerac with Hannisville Rye - Distilled 1863.

Xarr, you were right. Utter perfection.

I want to go again with a group so we can have the sharing cocktails. I saw the steaming teapot one served and it was rad. If you haven't been to this bar, you need to as soon as you can.

I really need to get to Bocca di Lupo. I don't think I've been back since I quit working there. The chef, Jacob Kennedy, is so drat passionate about food and it shows. Also, he's a really awesome guy.

Need a few good ideas for good date restaurants around Covent Garden that don't take reservations for dinner. Help me out guys!

VVVV Thanks for the help! I think it's going to be a toss-up between Da Polpo and Mildreds (which I went to a couple weeks ago and was amazing.)

We should do a GWS London outing sometime.

Anyone been to Mestizo in Angel recently? I went there 2 years ago and it was loving stellar Mexican food. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but the flavours were spot on. Also, their tequila list is probably second to none in London.

Went down to Japanese Knife Company yesterday to get a knife sharpened (and ended up buying a new piece :D). Noticed Purl was just across the road, so I stopped in for a cocktail. Not as good as Nightjar and not nearly the selection, but great cocktails nonetheless. I really liked the Femme Fatale. Very well balanced, and it came with a spherified olive, which was loving incredible.

That's just around the corner from me, and I've never eaten there, but friends have and they've said it's pretty middling. The food is fine, but doesn't live up to the pretentiousness of the place. It really thinks its a hell of a lot better than it is.

Hmm, interesting. I think the food is pretty good, if not slightly overpriced. It's nice to have something decent close to the house though. Also, I hear there's a waiter that gives free digestif to goons :iiam:

In other news, I'm headed to Manna tonight. Super excited!

The Gate is (unsurprisingly) booked up for the night, so it looks like I'll be visiting Gojo*!

*If I can find it, which is supposed to be difficult. I asked the lady on the phone and all she said was "near the station under the off-licence."

EDIT: I found it!! It really is just a stairwell leading under an off-license. Three of us went and we had 3 samosa, vegetarian selection (cabbage and potato, red lentils, green beans, spinach (they said spinach, I suspect it was a darker green leaf), yellow bean stew) and shiro wot. I had a cup of tea afterwords.

The vege selection was impeccable. The two people I was with didn't care for the spinach, but I loved it. The misir wot (red lentils) were absolutely incredible. Super rich and nice and spicy, perfect accompaniment to the more mild dishes. I've had much better shiro wot, but the injera was second only to the stuff I had in Addis Ababa.

It was a TON of food, and we struggled to get through it all. The two people I was with had never had Ethiopian food before and they absolutely loved it. We shared a bottle of wine we got from the off license. All told, the three of us ate and drank for £24. Best. Value. Ever.

Also, can anyone recommend anything cheap-ish (10-15pp) near Hyde Park?

My brother's (21st) birthday is coming up soon and I'm looking for a bar. We've already booked Blueberry bar around 8pm or so and we'll probably spend an hour or two there. Got a ping pong table! The next logical stop would be Worship Street Whistling Shop, but unfortunately it's already booked out :(.

We'd like somewhere relatively close by, can accommodate 20 or so people, preferably somewhere with awesome cocktails. Nightjar would probably be too small and Purl might be too far out. As you might imagine, we're all pretty big fans of speakeasy type places :D

What's your favourite pizza place in London?

I went to Sacro Cuore last Friday. They don't take bookings (sorry Neris!) but we got lucky and there was one table free. We had the Bufalina (tomato sauce, buffalo D.O.P. mozz, parmesan, basil, olive oil) and a Margherita with capers, artichoke hearts and wild broccoli. The Bufalina was amazing. Excellent char, good chewy-ness, good flavour. I'd say if it was a bit crispier the crust would have been perfect. Sauce and cheese were awesome as well. Best pizza I've had in a long time. The Margherita we got was a bit of a let down. Crust was as good as the first, but the capers were tiny (unlike the 'big fat' capers in the reviews we read), the broccoli was terribly overcooked and the garlic was completely raw. We had the eggplant parmesan to start and that was really tasty, but way to cheesy if you planned on having pizza afterwards.

When I go back I definitely want to try the Diavola. The couple next to us got it and the smell of the fresh chilies was incredible and I swear it made my eyes water from one table over. I need that in my life.

EDIT: Aw, nuts. I just realised they have a smoked mozzarella. Looks like I'll be going back there sooner than I thought.

I have a friend who will be coming to London for a week, staying near St. Pancras station. He's looking for good food. He's open to suggestions, but definitely wants one GOOD Indian place (doesn't have to be fancy, food needs to be outstanding) and one place where he can get game (venison, grouse, boar, etc.).

He'll be in town for a week, mostly museum hopping, so anything near Tate Britain, British Museum, the British Library, the V&A, the Courtauld, and the National Gallery is also fair game (heh).

Any recommendations?

I think he'll be walking for the most part, but you can't really do much without a travelcard in London. I'm sure he's open to suggestions that are a few tube stops away.

He did mention that he had Rules in Covent Garden on the list. It looks astronomically expensive for what it is. Has anyone been? Is it worth it?

I did mention St. John to him, but I'll make sure and mention it again.

For Indian, does anyone know of a GOOD Gujarati place where he can tuck into a thali? I know of a bunch, but they're all in Harrow/Wembley :D

I wasn't aware you could leave air side in Heathrow for a layover like that. We're a lot more stringent about that than the U.S. Also, there's really nothing around Heathrow, the whole area is pretty much a dump. Hotels, industrial estates and warehouses.

Yeah, you can. You have to go to the counter near the electronics shops and tell them you want to leave, and why. They'll escort you out. They do this on the hour, every hour. (This is the process in T5 anyways, haven't done this in the other terminals.)

Shame there's nothing nearby. It's too bad they can't come into the airport to hit up Plane Food or Waga's.

It's also worth noting that 'Mexican' can't be classified easily. There's a HUGE range of culinary diversity based on region throughout Mexico, and you can't just list 5, 10, or even 100 things and say 'this is Mexican' food.

That being said, Wahaca has done really well for themselves, and their food is fantastic ('true' Mexican or not).
