Paying $20 for a DVD of a comedy special was almost never an option for me and I would wait until it was on Netflix or something. But $5 is a no-brainer.

I'm glad someone else is trying this out. I'm surprised it was Gaffigan, of all people. I really like his style, even if everyone else in my family hates him for some reason. I just hope he doesn't revisit the Hot Pockets bit.

I think it was just for King Baby, because I don't remember him doing it at all in Beyond the Pale or on his Comedy Central Presents episode. It did get grating really quickly, though, since there were times he would do a solid minute of them.

He did it a ton in Beyond the Pale, I think maybe less in King Baby (I haven't listened to that one in a while). I find it funny but can see how it could be grating after a while. I look forward to this, I think he's a funny dude and seems like a good guy so hopefully it works out. Definitely curious to see what kind of sales he does since he doesn't have the name recognition of a guy like Louis.

Yeah he really toned it down in King Baby, but christ, it slayed me in Beyond the Pale. I was actually kind of bummed that he eased up on it. I guess it's better that he's trying not to have it be his "thing" but that "I didn't know he was going to do bear jokes" part still keeps me awake at night giggling.

Just watched "I Am Comic" a few weeks ago, and Gaffigan complained (complained is probably the wrong word, since he seems to consider it a compliment to be recognized) that people will just yell HOOOOOOOT POCKET at him on the street, and he doesn't really know how to respond to that. Sounded like he didn't really want to have that be his "git 'er dun"

I remember listening to King Baby for the first time and hearing him mention the words "Hot Pocket", and then hearing the audience go absolutely nuts. The worst.

I saw John Oliver perform at the DC Improv this weekend, and he was phenomenal. Bill Burr did a drop-in beforehand, too, so that was pretty cool. Even the feature act, Jeff Maurer (I think?), was solid. Yay live comedy!

Aziz Ansari put out his own Louis CK special (this is the new generic term for a 5$ internet-only no DRM self-produced comedy special) without much fanfare. More to come from Jim Gaffigan (with more fanfare) and Joe Rogan in the months to come. I hope this actually becomes a thing now. I mean, I'm willing to pay so much for a stand-up album, but I know that the stand-ups themselves don't see as much of the profits as they really should, and the whole DRM free thing is a nice touch.

There are A LOT of people who are on the bubble as to whether the model would work or not, e.g. Jim Gaffigan or maybe even PFT. Radiohead tried the same thing a while back and it worked for them. I don't see a lot of (or any?) other bands trying it nowadays. *=For the model to work, I mean that the comedian will make more money going the Louis C.K. route(CKR) as opposed to the potential fixed sales(PFS). So, if CKR > PFS, then by all means go ahead with it. But if PFS>CKR, then hold up son, we have to go through TicketMaster/LiveNation. If the artist doesn't care about revenue, then go CKR. Okay, I'm trying to go off personal experience because I don't know where to get the data on the subject. I'll take your word that a lot of artists are doing this. Let's put it another way. A comedian or band or whatever asks you to pay what you think this thing they created deserves. If you know this artist's prior work, and you like the prior work, you're more likely to pay a premium for the product. If, however, I come up to you and tell you that I just made this comedic record and that it's really good, and you can pay me what you want for it, would you pay me $15 or $8? Or less?

All that matters is how much money Aziz and other comics are putting into their produced specials and distribution services. Louis CK spent $250k total, but the smaller acts could cut that number way down. They won't need as much bandwidth on their site, their fans probably know the production values won't be as nice, and other costs.
