BobTheCow posted:What the hell is Norm Macdonald doing on his Twitter right now? I mean, he's obviously (very meticulously) calling golf, but... why? I keep looking for a joke, but none has come. Macdonald is a gambling addict and sports nut, so he probably sincerely cares about the minutia of the game.

toanoradian posted:Jim Gaffigan releases his new stand-up special, Mr. Universe today! It's available for 5 dollars and you can download it directly from his website, just like the one by Louis C. K. and Aziz Ansari. I can't fathom why you wouldn't like Gaffigan, so go and download them. I was at that taping, and the Ansari one, and it was pretty drat good. It looks like it doesn't have Todd Glass as the opening act though, which is quite a shame.

Space_Butler posted:I really, truly, genuinely wish anyone else had reported on it. That woman somehow reports on all matters of comedians despite not having a single funny bone in her body. I'm not saying that necessarily makes her wrong on the matter either (although she neglects to update the story to reflect that Tosh apologized via twitter, which was unexpected by pretty much everyone and might undermine the point of her article), but she feels the need to weigh in on all matters of stand up comedians despite not having ever once shown to have any expertise or perspective in the field of stand-up comedy. I mean, for fucks sake, she wrote that hecklers were "a legitimate part of comedy performances" (she since crossed that out after people pointed out how mindbogglingly stupid of a statement it was, but it highlights how she has no actual, real-world perspective on standup). She doesn't need to be right for Tosh's actions to be wrong. e. VVV Whoops. Maarak fucked around with this message at 06:23 on Jul 11, 2012 |

Maybe it's time those traditions get reexamined. Way past time. The issues inherent in Tosh's thing aren't specific to stand up comedy, but to our cultural in general.

Carlos Mencia and Dave Chappelle both make frequent jokes regarding race, but Mencia's stuff is widely seen as racist while Chappelle's is mocking racists and racism. American culture's issues with rape and misogyny are still largely unchallenged, so jokes that talk about rape have to be very clear in their intent, well written, artfully delivered, or better yet all of the above. Assuming the blogger's account of Tosh's act is accurate, he blundered and made an unfunny unintentionally threatening joke. If the account is inaccurate, it's still an issue worthy of discussion given the shockingly blunt defense of Tosh from other comics and people in general.

TheAbortionator posted:I actually agree with alot of what you are saying, but I do think problems arise when we start asking who gets to be the judge of the intent, whats well written and whats artfully delivered. I think everyone should be their own judge of art, but at the same time there are readings and interpretations that are better than others. Which is why it's important to treat comedy seriously and have open discussion, as no one person is going to be right about everything.

XK posted:I really don't understand what this has to do with anything. 1 in 4 people will die of cancer, but I don't hear anyone telling comics they can't joke about cancer. Are only cancer survivors allowed to joke about cancer? Most of the time at least, society doesn't blame cancer patients for getting cancer. It's not comparable. e. If you find this funny, there are at least a couple HBO specials to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m_-dWBECdA They're not great, but I think people overstate how bad they are. The material is marginal, but some people really like his high energy delivery and physicality on stage.

Despite supporting a ton of poo poo I can't stand, Stanhope knows comedy. A recommendation from him is gold.

Comedic actors turning to stand-up late in their careers is practically a tradition by now, and they're not getting any better at it. People will pay to see a name they've heard before, even if that person has never been known for stand-up comedy.

Like, I get niche humor but even as someone who gets the gags, there's just nothing really there. Is Jon Wurster producing it?
