Excellent OP! I'm looking forward to collaborating in new memories. Transmitting broadcast. EDIT: Going through the nice list Stranger put up I see Super Mario World was already on third(?) season. I didn't know it was so early on the show, considering it's a high profile game and all. Would love to see it translated some day. Sadly, the turnout of the challenge has been spoiled again and again in various episodes. If anyone's seen it, is there anything otherwise relevant in it? I try to avoid watching GCCX without subs because my Japanese is subpar. jyrque fucked around with this message at 09:38 on Dec 4, 2011 |

Speaking of medleys, here's a up-beat medley of 53 Stations of Tokaido. Not sure if it was posted in the last thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=0zTd0sM0EsA The melody is actually pretty good. One thing I love about Nintendo-era gaming is the music. Restrictions in both sound chips and memory forced sound engineers and composers to get really creative. zari-gani posted:Yep, I uploaded that and linked to it in page 4 of this thread. Please tell me there's co-op segment in the Battletoads episode. I love Arino and some poor assistant trying their hardest to work together in GCCX only ultimately to fail due to Arino's antics. Reminds me of scrolling beat'em'ups and other games where powerups are limited and that rear end in a top hat you're playing with keeps hogging all the turkeys and pizzas when you're the one actually in need. Battletoads is just perfect for co-op failure.

Battletoads is as essential nail-your-balls-to-the-wall-hard NES game even in Europe, especially considering its creator Rare Ltd. is based in UK. Not sure how widely sold it was but I never, ever found Battletoads when I tried to buy it or even rent it. Luckily I had the priviledge of friending a kid who owned the game and could play Battletoads loads. I never passed through that ice stage which I think I only ever reached once. All things considered I have to say Flashback was probably my favorite childhood game. An adventure through multiple locales and even a barebones city hub with a working metro system was mindblowing for a console kid.

Johanz posted:Crazy western games, I tell ya! (Western) PC games in general aren't that hot in Japan. When I was in Japan, any given 'otaku' software store in Akihabara there would be a whole floor of porn games with a tiny shelf and a sale bin for Western games. There you could pick up Diablo 2 for 30 bucks, Total War collection for 110 bucks or even Mount & Blade for 60 bucks! It's obvious from retail prices alone that PC games really don't have much value in there, be it due to uppity salespeople or just plain lack of demand. You see the occasional Japanese Western game enthusiast on internet but that's a given, considering how many people there are in Japan. I think Xbox is healthy in Japan only due to pandering to the otaku culture with Idolmaster games and whatnot... Western console games, on the other hand, seemed to enjoy a familiar spot on store shelves. Where in our stores we would have Madden, NHL, Modern Warfare next to a Atlus RPG, in Japan it would obviously be vice versa.

The new episode was certainly a surprise. Without watching it, I bet there's a good reason it was chosen from the least translated 15th season, especially as probably one of the most requested episode (Battletoads) is also there. But really, the most fun episodes to me have always been games I've never either played or never heard of. Shadow Lands, Goemon, Hokkaido Murders, Legend of the Wizard, Hanamaru... it's all great stuff.

So lately I've got the worst itch for NES era gaming so I wanted to ask you guys how you play your games. Some of you have mentioned you've ordered online some games Arino has faced and I'd like to get into them as well. Specifically I'd like to buy a NES/Famicom because emulators ironically can't emulate that pristine KACHO feel to gaming. I've been researching online and apparently NES is pisseasy to make region free. However, a regular western NES (I'm European btw) uses a different form of cartridges from the Famicom so I don't think that will by itself enable me to play Famicom goodness. Apparently AV Famicom, the grey toploader model, is a good alternative, if you can get your hands on a Japanese version with somewhat modern (read: not RF) video/audio input. Anyone have any experience on that? Is there some alternative like SupaBoy, the handheld SNES that can be plugged into a modern TV set? jyrque fucked around with this message at 23:13 on Feb 25, 2012 |

Most every software store there has this tiny segment of shelf space dedicated to PC games that are way overpriced. Or how does 13.000 yen (~130 bucks) for complete Total War series sound like in age of Steam? Needless to say, every store I went to had the same case, with about 80% of space reserved for date simulators, pornographic or not. Consoles fit better in Japan's commercialist nature, I think.

I know it's nitpicking, but it's kind of confusing when some of the torrent releases are in appropriate season folders and some are not. Recent Megaman was not. It's no big deal to check what season the episode is in but it's the principle, drat it. Unified torrent folder policies will help in the longer run when new releases find their way easily into predefined default season format folders.

Newest version streams pretty much anything to PS3 and if it doesn't, there's transcoded versions available through the media server. Some of the level design is malicious trolling and it's possible to get stuck. Luckily it's usually just a 5 minutes trip from the surface back to where you failed. The game world is huge anyways. I see myself loving this game as a kid but it really is one of those games you need a strategy guide to beat it.
