I'd love to work on an art piece or may be a blog sometime based around the idea of progressives working against each other, called something like 'the pain of being progressive.' My latest inspiration are these two articles:

http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2107364,00.html
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/02/22/BA0R1NAEQI.DTL

Essentially: Gleick should not have done what he did and he did more damage than it was worth. One of the articles even concedes the point that Heartland has been directly engaging in deceitful actions in the public sphere. I guess to simplify this would be to ask 'does two wrongs make a right?' But that is too simple. I have not one single problem with Gleick. The 'extra memo' is pretty odd but it is receiving far too much attention if it did not originate with him. He found out some info and did some more research, good for him, and directly exposed a coordinated disinformation campaign. The journalist holier than thou attitude in one of the articles really leaves me with the feeling that journalists are happy with their limp wristed reporting and taking it on the chin from their corporate money masters. This guy is awesome and deserves respect, not shunning.

Cool thread! I don't have much to contribute other than that book is depressing (and interesting) as hell.

Bjorn Lomberg had a pretty interesting Op-Ed in the NYT today. Can't say there's much there I disagree with, unlike most of his stuff.

quote:

The developed world needs a smarter approach toward cleaner fuels. The United States has been showing the way. Hydraulic fracturing has produced an abundance of inexpensive natural gas, leading to a shift away from coal in electricity production. Because burning natural gas emits half the carbon dioxide of coal, this technology has helped the United States reduce carbon dioxide emissions to the lowest level since the mid-1990s, even as emissions rise globally. We need to export this technology and help other nations exploit it.
Smarter and cleaner are not ways to describe fracking.

I'm not a leftist, nor am I predicting any apocalypse. The status quo is a profoundly unjust one which is demonstrably destroying the conditions of its own existence-
The thing about this is it is one thing to say it is so, that that the way we live our lives is contributing to our own destruction and is absurdly unfair but it is entirely another thing to explain why you believe this to be true to someone who hasn't even considered stuff like this. If you are in a conversation with someone and bring this kind of thing up, it is basically impossible to not sound like an apocalyptic doomsday sayer. I don't know, not trying to disagree or argue, I just find it interesting how something that seems obvious to me can be so difficult to articulate.

There are a variety of ways you can look at the back to the land idea. If everyone did it then yea, that would probably do more harm than good to our environment, but people are inspired by this idea by more than a simple argument like that. People often cite wanting a simpler life not filled with consumerism or having to work and make money for other people. If you look at things more through the lens of global capitalism and its effect on our planet you could try and make the argument that limiting your participation in that system helps. Some try and take that in the direction of the self sufficient off the grid lifestyle. As of right now I don't think there are any solid solutions for an individual given the tragedy of the commons.

How about this:

quote:

March 28, 2014, AUSTIN, TX – March winds brought a new wind power record to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region Wednesday evening, March 26, when instantaneous output reached a record 10,296 megawatts (MW) at 8:48 p.m.

At the time the new record was set, wind generation was providing nearly 29 percent of the 35,768 MW of electricity being used on the ERCOT grid. The new record beats the previous record set earlier this month by more than 600 MW, and the American Wind Energy Association reports it was a record for any U.S. power system.

Of the total generation at the time, 1,433 MW came from wind generators on the Gulf Coast, while 8,863 MW came from other regions. Most came from West Texas, where transmission projects in the Competitive Renewable Energy Zones were recently completed to transport more power from that region to more populated areas of the state.

The transition to renewable energy sources is possible.

That is a good run down of a wide variety of books. You should be able to find something in there that appeals to you (ignore the quotes on the right), personally I am a fan of This Changes Everything, but you would probably want to read that after reading something like The Weather Makers or something like that but more recent.

If someone gives birth to Captain Planet, does this require the subsequent birthing of:

a) ALL of the Planeteers?
b) only SOME of the Planeteers? (i.e. no Heart because he was garbage)
c) NONE of the Planteteers because Captain Planet himself will be pissed enough with the situation that he'll sort poo poo out alone?

AND if a) or b), then what is the maximum proximity of birth for them to be effective?
Dude

Someone doesn't give birth to Captain Planet. Captain Planet appears when the five Planeteers combine the 5 elements of Our Planet. So you are asking the wrong question. Captain Planet is only 'birthed' with the collective action of the 5 Planeteers, chosen by Gaia.

We need the rings but I fear Gaia gave up on us a long time ago

It is an interesting collection of news and perspective that you might not find elsewhere but I've found it to be an odd collection of the depressed. To engage that stuff regularly one almost comes off as wanting it to happen due to how much time they've invested in believing it to be true. The world at large will likely go through reorganization with all sorts of scattered displacement and suffering but if you are in your 30s in america, nothing yet is really pointing to any type of extreme suffering in your life due to climate change.

One person I can think of who has tried to do basically what you are saying, and doesn't look weird with a grey beard, is Jess Spear. Her opponents in the establishment have co-opted any message she had and packaged it in a more 'reasonable' manner. She hasn't really come close to winning despite being correct and all that. She now campaigns for a higher minimum wage.

Choose which ever researcher and study you want to believe!

"while geoengineering could presumably lower the planet's temperature, it cannot correct the other consequences of mounting carbon dioxide pollution. For instance, as the oceans absorb more CO2 they acidify, and decreasing ocean pH levels threaten coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. No amount of stratospheric sulfate can reverse that."

Carbon in the atmosphere is not our only problem either.
