Yeah that's it, they've changed it so it's the other way around now, pistol then HVR since you can't switch off the HVR until the bolt cycles. It makes people real salty.

HAHAHA! This is the worst loving thing I have ever seen released on a console. Pure dog poo poo. I was almost on board with playing it for old times sake, but holy poo poo it's bad. I couldn't even get the pointer over a contact in the map to pledge to them without it skipping all over the place. The deep customization that this game offers is not worth it. How are these devs not ashamed of their product.

The customization machines all lag like hell also, it's like rendering an expensive overlay on top of the player's normal third person view. Then you get a few seconds of solid 60fps, then the circle you wanted to make a pixel larger stretched itself to a scale comparable to the ego of the G1 crew approving this for release.

It don't look to me like the port done in-house, where some standard are made (realistic or not) and they try to reach them.

It smell like somebody hired a french guy, then he hired a guy in morocco to do the port, and the only two restrictions where: it must run in the PS4 and it must pass Sony certification.

Unreal Engine version 2.5 so kinda

but I can bug the port out to give a smooth and honest to god solid 60 frames per second at the cost of rendering my character unable to do anything but run and jump, for a random amount of time, with the unecessarily high graphical settings not changing, character textures loading in and out..

Haha yea hearing people's voice chat when you're near them was awesome.

I had several well made video game themes like the mortal kombat 2 character selection theme.

My favourite thing to do though would be to make a really annoying high pitch kill theme so every time I kill someone they would be forced to listen to it

Even a Balkan Kolva is hard to drive in the PS4 version. Mucking about before the daily Persona 5 until I fall asleep session, it seems there's no analogue throttle or steering mapped, instead it's just hard left, deadzone, hard right. And then the client lag, server lag, display lag on top of that.

Free jeep/mini, 10 day weapon offer, two weeks or whatever it was of premium when starting up. Crims are more interested in ramraiding than missions so LTL tears can be made easily with console-level pubbies. The framerates make me ill though.

PS4 version got patched to 1.02 and they allude to finally enabling multi-core performance. The game was made slightly less crashy, that's it, and they seem to have cut social district detail down to make it smoother running. Forget LTL against any ex-APB PC players who know how things work or just LTL at all when the framerates are taking a dump, and with how nerfed LTL got over time. Mouse and 60fps and it'd be a treasure trove of tears ready to reap, but it's 75% crim players and 90% of them don't queue.

Districtchats are about porn and what to buy from the gamersfirst store for real money. Put a fork in it, I want it to be done.

I wonder if we'll ever see the likes again. APB Done Right would be the coolest poo poo in the world. I'm glad I recorded all the good times I had and that I've largely forgotten about all the torturous, hateful poo poo that comes with dealing with the game, but I don't ever see myself going back to it.

I maintain that without the customisation I'd have bounced right off it, but when you get a bunch of cool poo poo under your belt and your character feels truly unique to you, and you manage some clutch mission wins or pull off the amazing multi car detonation that saves your team it's hard not to keep maintaining a flash of hope that maybe, somewhere deep within, there's joy to be found before the game stamps you back into the dirt

Good!, I finnaly manage to find a 2TB drive around my house, so now that my PS4 is not disc space capped having APB will be a no brainer.

quote:

remake APB

I hope somebody make a remake of APB. Even if is only similar in spirit. In a way The Division was somewhat that, but without vehicles, and the combat had the type of retarded "shot from cover" mechanic from Ubisoft games that make all games feel too similar and half-assed. Ghost Recon WIldlands have some of that, the production values are amazing, but the game is really beta state with many things that feel unfinished. And theres no oposition, and driving a small road in the jungle feels somewhat like a chore.. Driving around in APB was relaxing, even when there where guys tryiing to kill you.

Songbearer

Fuck you say?
I think a lot of my enjoyment of APB came from the aesthetic and vibe of the game, the sort of graffiti-punk feel and the fact the two cop factions were presented as a bunch of crazed jocks or wannabe army gun nuts rather than "just good dudes" was a really cool idea and made it feel good to be total dicks all the time to crims. Without the car customisation and wacky outfits/gimmicks you can do it loses a lot of its appeal, Battlefield Hardline was essentially a first person take on it and it was dull as poo poo in terms of presentation.

There's a lot the game did well in concept, such as loadouts dictating your place in the action, weapons that filled incredibly specific niches which could nonetheless win you a mission when used right rather than homogeneous "Like this, but slightly slower/faster" variants in most games, lots of variable ranges during missions (for the most part - Waterfront is a horrible offender on that front) and a pretty heavy reliance on working as a cohesive team and communicating to overwhelm enemies. Driving felt awful but once you got good with it, it became an actual valuable skill to have and getting in car chases/moving gun battles felt great. This was only when the game clicked and wasn't full of hackers or people who would exploit the gently caress out of missions, which eventually became the only way to win against veteran players anyway by stacking the odds so heavily in your favour that nobody had a chance to win, no matter what your skill.

It's a tough call because to imitate the game directly would be suicide, but so much of it only worked because of the way the game was designed anyway. Remove the server based driving, the culprit of the sluggish handling, and you'd get problems like in every other game where client side vehicles would lag around or not take damage accurately. Add a cover system and corner camping/sniping becomes even more viable than before. Add headshots and locational damage and you get a game that feels a lot more modern, but the lethality of the game skyrockets where it's already an incredibly brutal game.

The fact it crashed so hard, then got back up and limped for a few more years while bits and pieces fell off it as maggots began to burst out of its rotting skin makes it unlikely that any other company is going to try to imitate it, which is a drat shame. There's such potential for a good game in there, but to untangle everything wrong with it and come out with something worthwhile would be beyond herculean.

You have the two islands of "APB clone" and "Can't reasonably compete with GTA:O" that anything else would have a hard time navigating.
It's a giant shame, because somewhere there, there's the game everyone has wanted forever and just hasn't properly landed.
GTA:O has more problems than gameplay in my limited experience. If APB got anything right, it's that it's seamless between it's content.

AzureSkys
Apr 27, 2003

There's some great games out there but I always wish they had the player movement and driving feel of APB (especially the camera shoulder switch and weighty feel of the vehicles). That's a big thing that really held me, along with a lot of your points, Songbearer. There was a nice mix all around of weapons, range style, character creation/customization, music, symbols, vehicle modding, weapon mod, environments (kind of), try hard mode, goof ball mode, see how lucky you can get for crazy stunts, or drive around doing silly things or just chilling. I know other games have some of that or do it better, but that mixed with the feel of APB is still missing.

APB was kind of still limping along with a bit of potential remaining then when GTA Online came out for PC it was like "well seeya" and time to start coffin shopping. Because you just don't compete with that.

Yes GTA Online is very flawed in many ways but lack of multiplayer content aside it's a better playing game. If it just had APB style missions then you'd basically be set.
