Haha, this caravanner segment is hilarious. Their jokes about caravanner/SUV owners are spot on. edit: Also I have no shame in admitting I will be loading some boxes and junk into my SUV today and hauling them to the dump. I might even be running by the hardware store later too. mod sassinator fucked around with this message at 23:31 on Jul 28, 2013 |

Wow that last segment was fantastic. Even as a pure blooded American, I couldn't help but feel proud for the brits. Always sad to see the end of another season though.

I would be OK with an entire hour long Top Gear episode of all the guys driving somewhere boring in boring cars in real time. I bet the James May one would be a fascinating discussion of mechanics and machines.

Oh god, Richard in the Trans-Am as Burt, James in the truck as Jerry Reed, and Clarkson chasing them as the sheriff. That would be awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnRwQjTYfGI

Yeah I thought it was kind of a meh episode. Would have been more fun if they could have gotten non-crap cars like the Escort Cosworth Clarkson loves or a Lancia Delta Integrale. One thing I am looking forward to is the Mercedes G63 6x6 review they teased in the preview video!

drat, that was a proper Top Gear episode. Great challenge at the start, nice bit with James in the middle, and great review of the P1. Loved the music too--heard some Nine Inch Nails (probably the Johnny Cash cover) and Blade Runner soundtrack. Cinematography was stellar as usual. Only thing I was a little surprised at was Jeremy not having a life jacket on during the water scenes. Is the Gibb more stable than a normal jetski?

Easy Mac posted:I was surprised he didn't have one either. And jetskis are very stable. Not the sit down ones I've been on--if you turn too quick they will happily roll you over right into the water. Usually this happens when you're as far away from the shore as possible and the engine will flood so you can't restart it. Ask me how I know...

Loved all the cold war stuff--great episode. Kinda wish I could watch 13 hours of May driving through the Ukraine and talking about the history of wars, Chernobyl, etc.

I think there are kits to take an old Miata donor chassis/drivetrain and put a Lotus 7/Caterham kit body on top. Would be pretty similar and a lot of fun I bet. Nice thing is because it starts with a Miata it's technically not a kit car and can be registered/driven just like a normal Miata. http://www.flyinmiata.com/westfield/westfield.php

DEAR SO CALLED TOP GEAR, IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT IN LAST WEEK'S EPISODE RICHARD HAMMOND WAS NOT, IN FACT, SHOWERED IN JEREMY AND JAMES' URINE. I DEMAND THAT THIS TRAVESTY BE RECTIFIED IMMEDIATELY, AND THAT RICHARD HAMMOND BE SHOWERED IN URINE DURING THE NEXT TOP GEAR EPISODE. SINCERELY YOURS, -PISSED OFF FAN

If there is no Jeremy Clarkson, there is no Top Gear. I seriously can't imagine the show without him. Seems like people are blowing this thing way out of proportion.

Get Sabine Schmitz on so the boys can be as sexist as they want and she'll put them in their place on the track. Maybe female stig?

Half a billion? Umm, wouldn't that make Clarkson one of the most well payed people in the world? Very few CEOs make even 100 million a year.

They should poke fun at the recent controversy and have a black stig. They could claim the BBC standards mandated they not discriminate against any race or ethnicity.

Yeah I enjoyed All Cars Go To Heaven too. They gave up too early on that poor Cherokee though. I bet they could have swapped in a new axle from one in a junkyard and been on their way.

I really enjoyed the hell out of James May's Cars of the People. Great little series with a ton of info about European cars I had no idea about. James looked like he loved filming all the boring cars too.

Well, to be fair James did fill a Renault full of bullets and grenades in one of the episodes. And LOL at him blowing off the Mini.

Petekill posted:I just got Hulu plus and found out I can watch US Top Gear, what are some of the best episodes to watch? I'd start with the latest seasons and work backwards. The early seasons are rough. The presenters didn't really have it together, and they had dumb segments that were too short like star in a reasonably priced car.

Don't forget the Chevy SSR too. You can even get it with an LS2 and 6 speed manual for like one model year (2005 I think). Folding retractable hard top too:

KakerMix posted:Wasn't the SSR used as a point to explain how pre-bankruptcy GM lost its way? I don't think the SSR was hated that much, but Bob Lutz makes a big point in his book about how the Envoy XUV (stupid GM SUV that has a retractable roof in the back so it can carry tall stuff) and how it was designed to be a 'grandfather clock mover' and passed all the focus tests and market research with flying colors, yet was a terrible car that no one wanted: See also Pontiac Aztek. Lutz mentions how the managers of that car came to him in tears because they were so proud of that car and that it passed every checkpoint on time. Doesn't matter if you ship a piece of poo poo on time, it's still a piece of poo poo.

I think the SSR was targeted at 50+ boomers who remembered cruising around in hotrod 40's and 50's pickup trucks and wanted something similar. I seriously doubt they ever expected any owner to use the bed for anything beyond hauling golf clubs.
