On the other hand, it still can't search history efficiently. When I was using firefox I basically only bookmarked sites I might visit some day but not often, since often visited (or recently visited) sites would come up by typing their first two letters in the address bar. Chrome does this too, to an extent, but it's just somehow not as good.

E: Oh right, here's one for the OP: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/obciceimmggglbmelaidpjlmodcebijb

Better History. There is literally no reason not to install it, chrome's history sucks balls and this is ten times better. Groups multiple pages in a domain to a single entry, segments entries by time, etc.

I've been having a problem with Chrome where if I delete bookmarks they will eventually come back. I think it has something to do with the bookmark sync thing putting them back after I delete them.

How do I fix this and make them stay gone?

Make that a pour over
I was forced back to Firefox once Chrome removed vertical tabs in version 16. I can't stand Firefox, the memory usage gets out of control when I use it the same way I used Chrome. Here is a good workaround on getting them back.

1. Use Chrome sync to backup personal content
2. Uninstall Chrome
3. Install version 16.0.899.0: http://www.oldapps.com/google_chrome.php?old_chrome=6660
4. Disable Chrome updates: http://www.chromefans.org/chrome-tutorial/how-to-disable-google-chrome-automatic-updates.htm
5. Reactivate side tabs and sync to restore data

Then to get rid of the "old profile" error message:

-Open Windows Explorer
-Changed defaults and views, to show list, and to show hidden files, and to show full directory.
then, I browsed to:
-c:\Users\HP\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Web Data
-I deleted the Web Data folder.
-Closed Windows Explorere, Opened Chrome,

edit: here is a cleaned up version of the instructions with more info: http://elementdesignllc.com/2012/01/re-enable-vertical-tabs-on-google-chrome-16/

Purposely using an outdated version of a browser is a pretty dumb thing to do. Not only are you exposing yourself to security issues but you won't get any future performance enhancements either. I suppose you already know that and didn't want the lecture though.

I switched to Chrome from Firefox a few months ago and I've been enjoying it. The page zooming is not quite as good quality, and I can't figure out how to make embedded Facebook comments resize too. Firefox seemed to be better at remembering a wide variety of form fields, but the Chrome form autofill is nicer when it works for all the fields. The activity indicator on pinned tabs is a little too subtle to notice too.

The version I rolled back to is still Chrome 16, just a version before they removed the side tabs. The second they bring back vertical tabs I'm updating to the latest. In the meantime, a couple weeks (or months) behind on something like Chrome isn't that big of a deal.

You're assuming it will come back (it won't) and as time goes by you'll be vulnerable to more and more exploits. There were 6 high, 7 medium and 1 low security fix in the latest version that you already don't have.

Your first problem is that your name is spelled wrong. Check Chrome's internal task manager to see what in particular is using all of the memory. Wrench>Tools>Task Manager

Shame? Ok? It was an image-heavy thread, and I figure preloading images caused the huge spike. It's just a site, and I'd rather have just discussed the memory problem I thought I had, not bringing anything else into it.

Yeah, it was the images that caused the massive RAM usage. Each element will continuously take up RAM even in a background tab. As for the shame, I was just kidding. Because you OBVIOUSLY had a hundred image count plus porn thread up, you naughty cretin!

Ah, sorry. Wasn't aware if it was tabboo to mention it or something. It would primarily be the preloading, correct? Before this extension had image preloading, stuff loaded normally, now in huge threads like that it gets very sluggish.

  • Download Scanning Protection
  • Many other small changes

Blog post: http://chrome.blogspot.com/2012/01/speed-and-security.html

quote:

Speed and Security

Today’s Beta release improves on two of Chrome’s core principles: speed and security.

One of the things people like best about Chrome is that it loads web pages quickly. To get you where you want to go even faster, Chrome will now start loading some web pages in the background, even before you’ve finished typing the URL in the omnibox. If the URL auto-completes to a site you’re very likely to visit, Chrome will begin to prerender the page. Prerendering reduces the time between when you hit Enter and when you see your fully-loaded web page--in some cases, the web page appears instantly.

On the security front, improvements to Chrome’s Safe Browsing technology should help protect you from additional types of malware attacks. Previously, Chrome focused primarily on protecting you from sites that would exploit your computer with no user interaction required. Now, we’re seeing an increase in malicious websites that try to convince you to download and run a file that will harm your computer. Some websites even pretend this malicious file is a free anti-virus product.

To help protect you against malicious downloads, Chrome now includes expanded functionality to analyze executable files (such as “.exe” and “.msi” files) that you download. If a file you download is known to be bad, or is hosted on a website that hosts a relatively high percentage of malicious downloads, Chrome will warn you that the file appears to be malicious and that you should discard it. We’re starting small with this initial Beta release, but we’ll be ramping up coverage for more and more malicious files in the coming months. Remember, no technical mechanism can ever protect you completely from malicious downloads. You should always be careful about which files you download and consider the reputation of their source.

Try out these changes in the new Chrome Beta--we look forward to hearing your feedback. As always, please keep in mind that the Beta channel inherently comes with more bugs and kinks to work out.

As for the new tab button, no idea.

Speaking of preserving, a while back the dev release started remembering what you had open after closing the browser. But it only lasted a few days and then went back to starting fresh after closing/reopening. Strange.
