I finished reading The Enemy at the Gate: Habsburgs, Ottomans, and the Battle for Europe a little while ago, and felt it was a concise, if a little disjointed, introduction to the great siege of Vienna and the events leading up to it. 'Course, I love depictions of sieges, so once it got to the showdown itself, I was hooked, and it was well worth hanging in there during the slow buildup.

On a slightly different note, can anyone recommend some books on medieval/renaissance mercenaries? It seems like a fascinating era of warfare, from what little I gleaned from wikipedia. The condottieri in Italy especially.
