Seconding Against the Grain.

I preferred Against the Grain to Dawn of Everything. The arguments seemed overall better supported by evidence and the book is about half the length. On the other hand Dawn of Everything felt quite long winded and repetitive.

If you like AtG, Scott’s other works seem similar thematically - Art of not being governed is also quite good

I am only a casual reader so am not sure of the reception of any of the above books by academics
