I saw Cuddle Magic when they opened for Death Vessel last weekend in RI, and they might be my new favorite band. Just a fantastic warm sound to all their songs and they killed it live. Uncommon to see a non-commercial group that has such a good blend of sound, lots of vocals/instruments going on and all the parts were so clean and distinct.

Edit: Had this song in my head all morning. Even better live though.

The new Sufjan record is great. I saw him perform last week at Newport Folk, and "Fourth of July" is even more haunting when the outro is five minutes of "we're all gonna die" set over building instrumentation. Also, having stood maybe only 20 feet away from him, I can say that Sufjan Stevens is quite possibly the most beautiful looking man on earth. I cannot believe that dude is 40 years old.

They were also at Newport Folk immediately following Sufjan. Just extremely talented and maybe one of the cleanest-sounding bands I've ever seen perform live. All of their instrumentation was so distinct and cool. Also a lot more down-to-earth and fun than you would expect, given the headiness of their music in general.

Apparently they're a noise rock band now?

Yeah they suck rear end now.

I honestly hate poo poo like this. Yeah it's a Coldplay song, but this "oh ho we're so above the material" ironic posturing from some dweebie indie group is somehow even more aggravating. If you're covering a song, cover it in earnest and showcase your ability to make the song meaningful to you. A good performer can take even the shallowest source material and make something noteworthy of it.

What are your top albums of the '10s? Honestly 2010 feels like so loving long ago that it's gonna take a lot of research for me to be able to answer this question. The past few years I've been using spotify to deep dive into weird international poo poo and obscure acts from the 70s. I'm less concerned with staying current than I used to be, which makes this hard to answer.

Unfortunately (because it's a boring and obvious choice) My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy will probably grab the #1 spot since it came out in 2010.

I can't believe Southeastern by Jason Isbell did not already auto-populate! He's released two good albums since 2013 but every song on that record makes you wanna kill yourself, it's glorious.

Unsurprisingly a lot of talented musicians come from affluent backgrounds where they could afford the kind of equipment, networking and training early in life to perform at a high level. Being wealthy offers tremendous advantages including the amplification of natural talent, a phenomenon that should come as a shock to absolutely no one.

It's a beautiful record though, and Sufjan Stevens is a beautiful man.
