I've been listening to Lucius pretty obsessively ever since I saw their Tiny Desk Concert about nine months ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Pk_2dVPjms

Two ladies with almost identical voices singing great songs with ridiculously good hooks. Their first album just came out yesterday, and it's fantastic. Far more dirty, distorted, and reverbed-out than their live performances, but that just makes me like it more. You can hear the whole thing on NPR's First Listen, and a video for the first single is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmck8zg4_OY

:swoon:

Now if they'd only come to Australia.

The new Broken Bells release is out and it's.. alright I guess? It's not as immediately catchy and memorable as the first one (I don't really care for danger mouse all that much to be honest, but I liked Broken Bells as a Shins fan). Was just talking to a friend about this album. It's okay, but I like the sound of it more than the songs themselves, it you get what I mean. Like it's really well-produced and has a good vibe to it, but I don't know that you will ever catch me humming one of these songs. The first one took a bit to grow on me, though, so maybe I just haven't given it enough time.

The new Zammuto album, Anchor, came out earlier this week. It's good, but Pitchfork doesn't like it. They're dumb. He did a rock song for the first time. The first single is Great Equator, which sounds a lot like his self-titled, but the album goes in some new directions.

I don't think I like it as much as his last solo album, but it does some interesting stuff.

Edit: Take this with a grain of salt, because I like everything Zammuto does, including his weird pre-Books stuff and it's getting mixed reviews, so it might not grab you the same way.

I'm a huge Zammuto fan so I'm definitely going to give it a shot. Thanks for the heads up!

For any of y'all who are Wilco fans, I'd highly encourage you to check out Tweedy's album Sukierae. It's Jeff Tweedy on vocals/drums and his 18-year-old son Spencer (who you might remember from their documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart) on drums. There's 20 songs, so it's a lot of material to absorb. It's honestly better than anything Wilco has done for years, though, and it's really nice to see this father/son duo play together and compliment each other really well.

Plus there's this one song that sounds kinda like something Modest Mouse might have done circa The Moon & Antarctica era.

I saw Jenny Lewis with Tuneyards and Shakey Graves in Austin this past weekend. I was just going for Jenny but, while Tuneyards were about as strange as I was expecting they were actually really good in their own way. I wasn't familiar with Shakey Graves, apparently he's somewhat of a local favorite in Austin, plays southern rock influenced music, and is for the most part a one man band.

The real treat was Jenny Lewis though, she was so good, easily one of my favorite concerts I've ever been to. She played Rilo Kiley, and Solo material all with the same level of musicality. She had a really great stage presence and I got chills when the chorus kicked in on "Better Son/Daughter".

At one point they let a bunch of extremely large balloons down, the lighting was pretty bad so I had a hard time getting pictures but I tried to get one of that. I'm not sure what they were thinking was going to happen but, the balloons almost all immediately got pushed up onto the stage which made it very crowded for the band for a brief period.

Tuneyards is a bit divisive in some circles, but I think she's amazing. Her energy live is absolutely intense, and anyone who's ever tried to do live looping stuff will have to admit that her sense of timing is almost superhuman.

I'd actually forgotten somewhat about that insane looping stuff she was doing. It was extremely impressive, I'd never seen anyone else do that in a live show. A friend of mind who did a lot of music in her undergrad said she only saw one other guy do it and he was a clarinet player.

Andrew Bird does it as well, also with an impossible level of skill.
