I bought Perfume Genius' last album when it came out based on the strength of a recommendation from I-don't-remember-where, but I never really listened to it. Then I heard a song on the Mr. Robot soundtrack that sounded crazy familiar, looked it up, and whammo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7OSSUwPVM4 So I went back and listened to the album and I loving love it. Can't believe I put it off for so long.

There've been other years like that too. 2002-2003 is a time when I remember a crazy amount of "holy poo poo" albums coming out, including (iirc) Spoon's Kill The Moonlight, Wilco's YHF, The Postal Service's Give Up, The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi, and Iron and Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days. It just felt to me like the entirety of music sorta sat down and said "Okay, let's figure out which ideas we're going to be expanding on for the next decade". e: Our Endless Numbered Days was early 2004, apparently. Weird, because I could swear I remember listening to it when I lived in Florida, but I moved to California in 2003. Dammit, brain, get your poo poo together. I wasn't knocked out by the new Lucius single, but I didn't hate it. Given how much I like their last album I'll probably listen to it a dozen more times before I really make up my mind about it.

Got the new Lucius and I'm still making up my mind about it. Vocals are amazing as always, but they seem to have gone in a less distorted, reverbed-out direction in terms of the production, and a lot of the composition is more dancey and electronic. It's well done, but I'm not sure I like that as much. That said, their last album is one of my favorites from the past few years and bits of it took a while to grow on me, so I'm going to give this one some time.

That is bizarre. One of my old mates from way back did all of their videos for a while and was constantly talking about them last time I visited. I thought they were just a local OKC thing, had no idea they had a national profile now. Pretty cool tho.

Y'all Christian Fitness has a new one out and it's loving great. http://christianfitness.bandcamp.com/album/this-taco-is-not-correct Getting a bit of a Gang of Four vibe off of it, but of course much rowdier and with a hefty dose of that good old McLusky/Future of the Left sarcasm. I grew up in a scene with a bunch of intentionally offensive band names (e.g., The PLO, Ancient Chinese Penis, The poo poo Whores, Ricky Retardo), and to me the most baffling thing is that you'd pick that sort of name in the first place if you're the kind of person/band who wasn't actively trying to piss people off. Doing something so deliberately provocative and then saying "oh poo poo apparently we provoked people" is just hard for me to grasp.

Honestly I was lukewarm on them at first, but I kept listening because someone whose taste I trust a lot had said that they take a while to grow. For me, their music was like one of those magic eye pictures where at first you're like "this is all just a bunch of random rear end nonsense", but then suddenly it snaps into focus and it's just a revelation. e: Talking about their earlier stuff. Swing Lo was a lot more immediately accessible, but still really good.

I know I already posted about it in this thread but upon further reflection the new Sylvan Esso is the best thing I've heard in years. The best thing about it is literally everything, and the second best thing about it is that it made me go back and listen to their first album more.

Y'all this new Perfume Genius album sounds like a butterfly coming out of its cocoon and saying "oh wow I'm beautiful...but hey I'm still really loving pissed off about some of that stuff that happened back when I was a caterpillar". Every time it swoops around you don't know if it's just marveling at its own wings or maybe coming in for a strafing run. It's just fragile and frightening and beautiful all at once and I'm in love with it.

exquisite tea posted:I honestly hate poo poo like this. Yeah it's a Coldplay song, but this "oh ho we're so above the material" ironic posturing from some dweebie indie group is somehow even more aggravating. If you're covering a song, cover it in earnest and showcase your ability to make the song meaningful to you. A good performer can take even the shallowest source material and make something noteworthy of it. I don't really agree that a cover needs to be in earnest, but for my money if you're going to gently caress it up on purpose at least put some effort and imagination into it. Reggie Watts' version of Panama, for instance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xetZZLmmEw8 The Cloud Nothings cover just seems lazy.
