Lblitzer posted:A friend of mine recommended it right when it came out and I wasn't that impressed either. Some tracks are really bland but I'll be damned if "surprise me 44" has one of the coolest beats around. Edit: This is my favorite Willscher track. The Dodos and Local Natives are both fantastic folk/pop bands. Taking folk music and adding really big loud drums to it is a great idea, and I don't know why more bands aren't trying it.

Cat Pancakes posted:Excuse me if this is out of line, but can someone recommend me some good indie rock? You should also try Tapes n Tapes (who are better than their reviews), Phoenix, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Modest Mouse (but I assume you have if you're listening to Wolf Parade), Arcade Fire, The New Pornographers, The Radio Department, Spoon, and Waters (if you're into folk you might like this, it's the classic-rocky new band from the lead singer of Port O'Brien) just to grab a few off my iPod.

Try Modest Mouse, Local Natives, The Dodos, Iron and Wine, and Wolf Parade for some more big-name indie rock and folk artists.

Also: Spoon should be required listening for anyone just getting into indie rock. Pick up Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga or Gimme Fiction.

ARE THOSE MY SPERMS posted:Ok, so I''ve been digging on some upbeat(ish) folksy songs lately, such as "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, or "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men. Anybody know of any songs that might be seen as similar to these two? Or even bands that produce similar music. Thanks!

Divine Fits have the singers from Spoon and Wolf Parade (no, the other singer). If you're looking for rock shows, they do really good straightforward indie rock.

The new Knife album, Shaking the Habitual, is rumored to have a couple tracks on it inspired by Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake." I think this is pretty great, since their song Neverland always reminded me of the book. If they ever make an Oryx and Crake movie, I hope The Knife feature heavily on the soundtrack.

NPR has a First Listen of the new Iron and Wine album up. It sounds like an extension of their sound from Kiss Each Other Clean, so if you liked that you'll enjoy this. They also have the new Flaming Lips album.

I think it's just a very different sound, because I don't really like any of his pre-Shepherd's Dog stuff except for a few bits of Woman King. I think Shepherd's Dog is his strongest album because of its diversity of styles and the much-needed addition of a rhythm section.

If you cut Fly Trapped In A Jar, Education, Steam Engenius, and Little Motel, and then put King Rat in their place, you get a much tighter and more listenable album. Modest Mouse always have too many songs on their albums.

According to Pitchfork, we can expect new albums from The Dodos, Neko Case, and Modest Mouse pretty soon. Neko Case announced her album title and released some song snippets, the Dodos just released a track from their new album, and Modest Mouse canceled their tour to go work on a new album. Divine Fits just released a single with two new tracks, but haven't said anything about a new album. Merril Garbus says she's also working on some new Tune-Yards stuff, and a new Tune-Yard album might be called "Sink-O," but there's not a lot of other details except that she's been studying drumming in Haiti. Edit: Neko Case just released a full song from her new album. FactsAreUseless fucked around with this message at 13:27 on Jun 11, 2013 |

I just hope the new Arcade Fire album is less bloated than The Suburbs. It's not a bad album but it's probably five tracks longer than it needs to be. This single is a good sign, though. Mountains Beyond Mountains was the best track on The Surburbs, and this track reminds me a lot of that one. (Also, for everyone who didn't like Neon Bible, try skipping the first and last tracks. The album instantly gets better.)

Isn't disco long and repetitive by its nature? It's dance music. Repetitive is sort of its thing.

Spencer Krug is putting out another Moonface album, titled "Julia With Blue Jeans On." It's supposedly only piano and vocals, which should be interesting. He's released one song, Everyone is Noah, Everyone is the Ark. If nothing else, he's keeping up his promise to make every Moonface album sound completely different from the others. Unfortunately, the promo images for the album kind of look like the cover to a bad grunge album. Pictured above: Spencer Krug's 90s Christian rock phase, apparently.

James Murphy is working on an album version of the final LCD Soundsystem concert. This promises to be a much better live experience than London Sessions. (If you can tell the difference between the album version of Get Innocuous and the London Sessions version, you are the biggest LCD fan on the planet.)

Neko Case just announced a tour with the Dodos opening. She guested on the Dodos' third album, No Color, so this is probably a good time to remind people that they released an album in mid-2013, called Carrier, and nobody noticed. Which is a shame, because while it's a departure from their first three releases it's not a bad album at all.

A Coldplay song sounds derivative of another artist? What an unprecedented scandal. How can Coldplay betray their many fans by failing to keep up their high standard for interesting, original music.
