I was pretty seriously unimpressed when I bought their album "Mother's Daughter." They're not terrible, but there's so much better indie folk out there, and they never really manage to do the folktronica thing properly. It's just vaguely Iron and Wine-ish with some electronics occasionally. Anyone interested in that folk-electronic sound, though, should check out The Books and Dosh.

You should also check out Zammuto's new solo album, it's excellent. And his old pre-Books album Willscher if you can track down a copy. It's interesting minimalist electronica stuff with lots of clicking for nerds.

A friend of mine recommended it right when it came out and I wasn't that impressed either. Some tracks are really bland but I'll be damned if "surprise me 44" has one of the coolest beats around.
This was the song that made me buy their album. The rest of the album just doesn't match up.

Edit: This is my favorite Willscher track.

The Dodos and Local Natives are both fantastic folk/pop bands. Taking folk music and adding really big loud drums to it is a great idea, and I don't know why more bands aren't trying it.

Excuse me if this is out of line, but can someone recommend me some good indie rock?

Recently I've been addicted to Wolf Parade
Check out both the lead singers' other bands. Spencer Krug's is Sunset Rubdown, start with either "Shut Up I Am Dreaming" or "Random Spirit Lover." Their third album, "Dragonslayer," isn't as good as the first two. Krug also just released an album as Moonface, but it's a pretty big departure from the Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown sound. Dan Boeckner's is Handsome Furs, check out their amazingly excellent (and criminally underappreciated) "Sound Kapital." (Face Control is also a good album, and their first, "Plague Park," isn't bad).

You should also try Tapes n Tapes (who are better than their reviews), Phoenix, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Modest Mouse (but I assume you have if you're listening to Wolf Parade), Arcade Fire, The New Pornographers, The Radio Department, Spoon, and Waters (if you're into folk you might like this, it's the classic-rocky new band from the lead singer of Port O'Brien) just to grab a few off my iPod.

Despite the lack of Krug, I think Handsome Furs are a lot closer to Wolf Parade than Sunset Rubdown or the other Krug side-projects, if you haven't listened to them yet.

The album cover would be five bi-curious looking Norwegians standing in front of a forest at sunset, and wearing various ironic masks and costumes. One of the masks would have antlers.

Try Local Natives. They opened for Edward Sharpe during their first tour, and they kind of sound like Fleet Foxes except with electric guitar and drums. Also try: The Dodos, Fleet Foxes, Mumford and Sons, Akron/Family, The Books, Port O'Brien, Dosh, Yeasayer's first album (only that one, though) and Iron and Wine's two latest albums. They all have pretty different but still folk-based sounds, so give them all a try and see what you like.

The new Knife album, Shaking the Habitual, is rumored to have a couple tracks on it inspired by Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake." That's disappointing.

I find that some artists can go from lo-fi folk to a more full and lush folk-rock successfully (for my money, Jason Molina in his Songs:Ohia to Magnolia Electric Co. is the best example of that) but I don't really dig his new sound s much.
I don't think that either of these albums stand up to Shepherd's Dog, but the closing track of Kiss Each Other Clean is still the best thing he's ever recorded.

I think it's just a very different sound, because I don't really like any of his pre-Shepherd's Dog stuff except for a few bits of Woman King. I think Shepherd's Dog is his strongest album because of its diversity of styles and the much-needed addition of a rhythm section.

They're not bad songs, the album is just too long. Sometimes you have to cut stuff, and that's the weakest section of the album. You could cut, say, We've Got Everything in favor of one of those, but the middle is the worst part of the album. The beginning and end are much stronger.

According to Pitchfork, we can expect new albums from The Dodos, Neko Case, and Modest Mouse pretty soon. Neko Case announced her album title and released some song snippets, the Dodos just released a track from their new album, and Modest Mouse canceled their tour to go work on a new album. Divine Fits just released a single with two new tracks, but haven't said anything about a new album. Merril Garbus says she's also working on some new Tune-Yards stuff, and a new Tune-Yard album might be called "Sink-O," but there's not a lot of other details except that she's been studying drumming in Haiti.

Edit: Neko Case just released a full song from her new album.

The drummer from Helio Sequence is the drummer who replaced Jeremiah Green for one Modest Mouse album (Good News). Sadly, a lot of their stuff is pretty forgettable Bob Dylan imitation, rather than more interesting dream-pop stuff like Keep Your Eyes Ahead. This isn't to say that dream-pop is somehow better than Bob Dylan, just that the Helio Sequence aren't a great Dylan cover band.

I just hope the new Arcade Fire album is less bloated than The Suburbs. It's not a bad album but it's probably five tracks longer than it needs to be. This single is a good sign, though. Mountains Beyond Mountains was the best track on The Surburbs, and this track reminds me a lot of that one.

(Also, for everyone who didn't like Neon Bible, try skipping the first and last tracks. The album instantly gets better.)

They're not bad tracks, just unnecessary ones. The album is tighter and better focused without them, and starting with Keep The Car Running and ending on No Cars Go is more interesting thematically. I just think it makes the album stronger, not that they're bad tracks on their own.

Spencer Krug is putting out another Moonface album, titled "Julia With Blue Jeans On." It's supposedly only piano and vocals, which should be interesting. He's released one song, Everyone is Noah, Everyone is the Ark. If nothing else, he's keeping up his promise to make every Moonface album sound completely different from the others.
