Gotta hype Joy Formidable.

Female singer, indie rock band from England. Sort of a 90s MBV guitar squall going on in a lot of their songs which I loving love, if they tour through my neck of the woods I'm going.

Ana Calvi: Excellent singer and guitarist

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKVy0EVu2ZI

This woman has a very, very powerful voice. Sort of the antithesis of many soft, whispered vocals in alot of indie rock bands, this girl loving belts it out. And she is a superb guitarist.

And I don't know if Cold Cave counts as indie anymore, since alot of people probably know about them by now. Suicide, Depeche Mode, The Cure and Sisters of Mercy all had a hot sweaty orgy, and Cold Cave is the love child.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb7hRZyT6SE

The Joy Formidable definitely delivers on stage ("Whirring" and "Austere" in particular, kick serious rear end). Cold Cave, on the other hand, was a little disappointing (but i reckon the absolute coldness and the complete absence of interaction with the spectators fit in well with their music - maybe they've improved on this since, though).

Another (previously?) underrated british band: Scanners. Apparently one of their song has been included in some series on TV, so they're probably gonna get into hype mode. Great on stage as well.

Do you guys have any concerts you're planning to attend?

If you like them and Metric you might like Wye Oak (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2guLl6Hmwo) and to a lesser extent Young Galaxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDnm2jZZq1w).

Yeah, Wye Oak is great ("Civilian", which you have linked, is really beautiful). In a way, it reminds me of severely underrated My Gold Mask (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5dwteSbW4I), although the latter sounds definitely noisier.

And now, for something slightly colder and more electro-ish, a friend just made me listen Darkness Falls: "The Void" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5K5jBqOoy0), whose keyboardist seems to be Trentemøller of old.

Sufjan Stevens.

He's in the process of recording his next studio album. After his experimental The Age Of Adz, I'm curious what he's doing now. Is he head backing to his indie folk roots or experimenting further? I didn't hate Age Of Adz, but I can't say it was an excellent album. Some songs, his voice is overwhelmed by the loud electronic roar. And that final song "Impossible Soul" is just a bore. That being said, I hope he continues to experiment. If he heads back to his indie folk roots, he risks being samey and damaging interest in him.

I loved the first albums, and when The Age of Adz got released, i was like 'huh?'

...then i went to see him on stage: i love the album since, especially Impossible Soul. I love the way the five parts meld one into another to make one of the most original thing i've heard in years.

The new Chromatics is good, but am I a jerk for admitting that I just don't think it's as good as everyone else? I think it's good, like, I'm glad I got it, but everyone else seems ready to put it on the album of the year shortlist, and I'm just not that in awe of it. (e: I can't quantify music for poo poo in text, so put a number on it, it's like an 8/10, I'm just not jaw-dropped by it.)

Pretty much my thoughts. Taken separately, the songs are really good but i can't listen to the whole album, it's pretty monotonous in the end.

And now for something completely different, which i'm pretty sure has already been talked about (but it's a great album so it deserves one more, albeit terrible, post about it): what do you think of the last Chairlift?

They recently released a preview of another song "Speed of the Collapse" on their Facebook. I'm really excited to get my hands on their new album. Has anyone seen them live? I've heard they aren't that great of a live band so I'm hesitant to get a ticket for when they come to my area.

I saw them a few years ago in a radio station's auditorium. Maybe this was because of the place (our chairs were waaaaay too cozy, and the whole room was the exact opposite of the usual beer-in-a-plastic-glass venue), but it's true they were a bit static. I'm gonna see them again in two months, so i'll keep you posted then.

What do you guys think about the last Hot Chip? I don't think i've seen anything about it yet in the thread.

Personnally, i'm a bit conflicted about it: the beginning of the album reminds me of Metronomy's first songs, and i don't really like what's after Flutes (which, btw, is my favorite track on the album).

Did you guys listen to Cat Power's last album "Sun"?

She now seems to be under antidepressant treatment, but i wouldn't say that she's radically changed. Most songs are more joyful and a bit more up-tempo than before, with more electronics thingies, which makes the LP more pop-ish, but i'm still not a fan. For reasons i don't fully understand, people around me seem to have a crush on "Ruin", but "3,6,9" is my favorite.

On a completely different register, i like very much WhoMadeWho's latest album. It's in the exact same electro-pop vein as the previous one, similar to Hot Chip, New Order, the Presets etc.

Here's a video of "Running Man" and "The Sun":

For those who are fond of the scandinavian indie artists, Masquer is one band to keep an eye on. Their electro-pop is not unlike Darkness Falls' earlier this year, and definitely deserves a spot on the Sweden music shelf next to Peter, Bjorn and John, The Knife and many others. Very, very, very nice!

Except in Kansas City where they can't even sell enough tickets to have the show:negative:

To be fair it was like 60 bucks per ticket after fees and around here only people like Bieber, Madonna, and Lady Gaga can get away anything higher than about 50.

60 bucks! In Paris, it's 31 euros (which is $39), which i'd say is already quite expensive... To be honest they're good, but not enough to afford a higher price. No wonder they didn't sell any ticket.

So i'm looking for this piece of music which got released around last fall and in which ~a well known band~ (by indie standards) uses the lyrics from the litany against fear of the Bene Gesserit in Frank Herbert's Dune series of books. I've been looking on google, stereogum, and have been asking to my friends, but none seem to be able to help.

Hence my asking to you, mighty goon-hivemind. Would anyone happen to have a link, please?

Thanks for the link, i like that video :). I'm still a bit annoyed that i didn't manage to get tickets for their next show (it got sold out in less than two hours), but i guess that's how things were meant to be, and there's no way on Earth i'm going to pay a ridiculously inflated price to a street vendor.

I'm not too fond of that last album, to be honest. But maybe i just like Zero and Pin too much.

And now for something completely different:

I don't know exactly when that mixtape got released (a few days ago obviously), but since i've gotten my hands on it, i've been keeping it on heavy rotation.
Many many really good songs here (even though you've got to sign up via Facebook to get them): http://www.cmj.com/mixtape/

Nobody seems to have mentioned Austra's second LP "Olympia" yet.

This new album is much less dark and cold than the first one (even though i still think said first one is a blast), with some parts that really sound very 70es-inspired. Overall, the whole thing sounds more polished, but still retains that special coldwave thing they had on the first album.

Saw them in concert last month: they improved on-stage as well. Stelmanis' and the twins' voices are definitely more adjusted. Their choregraphy and gestures in general still make them look as if they were on mushrooms, though. That's a good thing, i guess.

Has anyone else been following AlunaGeorge this year? They're maybe a little more indie R&B than indie pop, but each one of their singles is better than the last, and their album, Body Music, finally comes out next week. It's currently streaming on their site:

http://bodymusic.alunageorge.com/

"You Know You Like It" and "Attracting Flies" are my favorites, but the whole thing's pretty consistent from end to end. I'm excited to see if their live show is equally as great later this fall.

I only really like "Analyzer" and "Attracting Flies" from them so far, but i'm definitely going to give their album an ear. :)

Edit: Oh, and Wye Oak's album is really good. Can't comment on the similarity with Bon Iver since for some reason i seem to be the only person on Earth who can't recall a song from him (the name and face have been ringing a bell for quite some time though) :iiam:

Just got back from Trust's show and holy poo poo they're good. I don't remember them being mentioned yet in this thread, so here goes:

Trust is a Canadian synthpop band that has 2 albums out, TRST and Joyland. The lead singer has an absurdly versatile voice that really has to be heard to be appreciated.

My favorite song off their first album, and probably just favorite song of their's in general is Bulbform: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqgv65j3uBo

My favorite song off their new album (which is a little lighter [I'm not good at finding words to describe music]) is Joyland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJO54bdmUCY

I recall him giving the impression of being high on something, dancing completely out of sync with what he was singing, but that was ok since it was completely in line with the atmosphere of the show. The drummer's other band, Austra is also very good.
