I think this is right thread for Bitter Ruin, they're currently unsigned as yet but you can get their music on Bandcamp and off their website here http://bitterruin.com/. They're kinda Cabaret (I first saw them live supporting Amanda Palmer), folky, indie kind of sounds. I'm not overally sure how to describe them.

First run though of the boygenius album, its great. Aside from the 4 previous singles released, these three really stand out:

Anti-Curse
We're in Love
Leonard Cohen

I still need to go pick my copy up from the shop. They're playing a festival here in Edinburgh but I don't think I'm going to be able to go sadly.

New things for me recently that I think more people should listen to

Hak Baker - Telephones for eyes

And

Lichen Slow - Preset

Lichen Slow are Malcom Middleton and Joel Harries. It's a really nice pretty chill record all in all.

Yeah, the only band I know of that’s pulled the hat trick of “after 20 years, now for something completely different” successfully is Low. Maybe Liars counts too, but they kind of did a different for thing every album and it didn’t always work (but I still love Liars)

I think Belle and Sebastian have crossed over the 20 year mark distressingly enough. Stuart really wants to be an electro pop band n some ways.

For me it hits hard. I'm pretty much the same age as Scott and he was a local lad, huge on the local scene for years. A genuinely warm person on and off stage.

Probably doesn't need saying here but the Tiny Changes - The Midnight Organ Fight cover album is really worth a listen. With Biffy Clyro, Julien Baker, The Twilight Sad, Daughter, Ben Gibbard etc on there.

Also going to promote Tiny Changes here

Oh man, Punisher is one of my favorite albums in a long, long while. In addition to just being great on its own merits, Phoebe went over the top on remote performances during covid, so if you ever get bored you should wander around Youtube looking at all the weird poo poo she did to keep it fresh when nobody could do very much.

This is my favorite example, of the same song you posted:

If you like a cover then the Radio 1 sessions are a fun place to look because traditionally you come on for a session, play your hit then play a tour cover or one you're prepared for it. That why we have Harry Styles covering Wet Leg or Christine and the Queens covering Lenny Kravitz

Pitchfork kind of sucks for rock music reviews at this point; they've gotten better for everything else but they still put on this whole "we don't like Dad Rock, we swear" act. You're basically guaranteed nothing higher than a 7 unless, possibly, you're Radiohead. Their review of the new Foo Fighters was the most irritating and patronizing "backhanded compliment" thing ever. At some point in the late 2000s they turned up the "rap and pop music are legitimate, actually" dial and never bothered to turn it back at all.

To be fair for the latest Foo Fighters record you could just copy and paste the review for the previous record and it would have done. No review is actually going to matter for it.

I went to Manchester Psych Festival the other week there and saw a bunch of folk.

The Mysterines - Locals and the first act of the day, the venue was crammed and they were pretty good for having the opening slot. I loved the Mysterines singles before the album but found the album itself a bit disappointing, good live though.

https://youtu.be/sfG5b8pW3pU?si=73XlqFdr5kkhhzBh

Sorry - at the Albert Hall in Manchester where the acoustics were awful but they were great. I love Sorry but I think they're suited to smaller venues better?

https://youtu.be/bzRrORE8LtU?si=isc0Vok414BF1o3B

The Lovely Eggs - A Manchester institution at this point I had never really gotten them before but seeing them live shows me why people love them so much. I'm not sure I've seen someone go harder than them on a first song for a long time. They were great, glad to have seen them.

https://youtu.be/2uuMy2ZN7A8?si=VyTsSkMMGG5XKw2Y

Pillow Queens - I'd heard a few things by them before but they were the standout act of the weekend to me, loved the set, loved the band. They really tipify this wave of young Irish post punk and rock bands like Fontaines DC, Sprints etc. A softer sound here to some extent but great. Immediately bought their first 2 albums.

https://youtu.be/LglMwrXcsW4?si=chAEwhAko0TKQRgG

Snail Mail - I was looking forward to Snail Mail. But it was back in the Albert Hall and if its possible to have negative stage presence they had it. They tried to hype the crowd a bit by just shouting Stone Roses a few times to absolutely nothing back from the crowd.

Benefits - This was a bit of a revelation here, angry powerful spoken word over a driving beat. Kingsley Hall holds the attention of everyone in the room with ease. Injecting a little humour now and again that relieves some of the pressure from the tracks. If you have a chance to see them live do it. Maybe not one to listen to when chilling at home, one to listen too when you want to smash the state.

https://youtu.be/7sc4cWzdiwk?si=GOghRKpmQ3UEEqPR

Hamish Hawk - he's a local lad to me and always puts on a banger of a show. Witty and with some really sing alongable songs he's great value live.

https://youtu.be/yC_-YhydSyc?si=hnVg4QU49DcTQAnt

Ezra Furman - I've never been that into Ezra Furman. I've heard them on the radio a bunch but never gotten round to actually listening to her in depth. But I did always like her show when she was on 6 music. But woah what a show, venue was packed and really up for it loved it.

https://youtu.be/E3VHFlVP-GM?si=MvLJy22P0ZaumkBf

DEADLETTER - This was at 1 am and I thought it might be winding down a little but in the end we had to queue to get into a tiny room so missed the first 20 mins of the set. But what a set, the whole room was jumping, I think this will be the smallest venue they'll play for a while as the atmosphere was amazing, songs were great what a way to end the day. The best live band I've seen for years.

What does industry plant even mean? I've seen a few article headlines but refuse to read into them.

Like a band that's been put together by 'the industry' and then unduly promoted having not 'served their time'. I think Wet Leg is another band that gets it. Panic Shack got some flak for being plants because they became popular on tik tock.

I saw someone saying that boygenius were propped up by the industry and aren't even indie because they're on a major label.

Like I say for some reason we'll simply never know it's usually just female bands.

Disco Pope posted:

With Wet Leg, a lot of it is misogyny, but they did appear incredibly polished and fully formed. That probably has as much to do with the fact that bands can't really build up a sound for 3 albums before crossing over any more. It happens (look at Wednesday and Rat Saw God), but where the stakes are initially much lower.

If Wet Leg have any sin, its how loving annoying and laboured that "Big D" line in Chaise Longe is. We get it, you sort of said "Dick" on the Radio 6 breakfast show, how subversive.

I always find is funny with Wet Leg people point out they didn't do many gigs, between when they were formed and their first album and that's evidence they were just put together by a label. So between 2019 and 2022 not many gigs eh?
