It's weird hearing an actual, honest to god guitar solo in a National song, I don't think they've ever had one on record before.

Also anyone seen Frightened Rabbit live? Im going tonight.

I've seen them live a few times and they were great gigs but they were all Glasgow, where they obviously get a great reception, so I'm not sure if it'd be the same atmosphere elsewhere.

The smiths are the only band I accept I'm terrible for liking but I can't help it.

A pal of mine plays drums in a Smiths/Morrissey tribute band. Went to a gig of theirs where they played the entire of The Queen is Dead. I'd never really cared at all about the Smiths before then, I liked This Charming Man but was happy to ignore them because Morrissey is such a loving dick. But now, yeah:

I had a brief look through the thread and couldn't find a mention of Richard Dawson, which makes me suspect that he's Actually Bad but, can I ask if anyone's listened to his stuff? I liked his album from last year.

Someone mentioned him literally last page. I listened to that album on a whim and loved it. The descriptions of him as "avant-folk" or whatever sounded unappealing but it turned out to be like Genesis or Comus mixed with who knows what and it's awesome.

I have no idea how I missed that haha. Yeah it's very good, I'm actually not super into the first two tracks but I love the rest of it and his hyper-detailed lyrics.

Am I the only one who can barely listen to new Mountain Goats stuff? By new I mean post Goths, an album that I really loved. Everything since then just seems really meandering, aimless, boring, predictable, I'm not sure what. It's bumming me out though.

Glad no one has suggested the national…..

thanks for reminding me, alligator/boxer/high violet is a very good trio of albums, and Trouble Will Find Me has some good songs on it but is also the start of an obvious and natural decline.

The hooks just aren't there for me. The production is amazing as always, but it sounds like a bunch of B sides like others have said.

The lyrics are also really Not Good even by the modest standards of Arcade Fire, and when the music is largely unremarkable it makes the bad lyrics stand out more. I did laugh at "gently caress season five" though, a rare example of a lyric that was actually surprising and had personality.

I'm disappointed. I love The Lightning, and I think the opening track is pretty decent. Maybe if I saw them played live I'd change my mind.

New Mountain Goats song. New Album based on old Italian action movies (?). Apparently full of up-tempo songs like this.

There are in fact entire genres or submovements that share the same one song, two at a stretch. Looking at you, British guitar music between 20002-2008ish

I like the new Mountain Goats album quite a lot. I feel like they're in a weird spot for me, I think the more recent albums have been solid, but nothing comes close to Sunset Tree or Get Lonely.

I've not heard the new album yet but the last three have sounded like they've been coasting, just pleasant but entirely unnecessary and aimless albums.

I think Goths was wonderful though. They're at their best when focused.

To revive Mountain Goats chat: the new songs sound great live, super energetic with great sing-along choruses. John has some great stage banter and talked about Yoshi's World at length which the crowd loved.

It's really funny listening to him playing his old songs right after their most recent work. All the old song outros were just the chords of the song played at 1.5 speed and louder.

John’s stage banter is always fantastic, he’s a super funny and smart guy who can talk for days. I can definitely imagine the new material being very fun live.

I listened to the new Richard Dawson record for the first time in work today, pretty good, not nearly as challenging a listen as I had feared given the first song is 41 minutes long. I don't love it quite as much as Peasant/2020/Henki on first listen but he does demand repeated listens. Thicker Than Water was my favourite.

this and Tropic Morning News have definitely been some of the lyrically knottiest songs they've put out recently. like more high-tempo versions of Not In Kansas

This is the most engaged I've been with the National lyrically in a while, I still don't think they're doing it for me musically anymore but if the whole album is a Kozelek style stream of conscious like this it would be pretty interesting and get me listening at least.

I'm curious if anyone wants to suggest some lyrical indie rock/pop/folk.

I don't mean the focus just singing over simple chords. The lyrics may be even be the best part.

Just that they're not an afterthought and instead are chosen to be meaningful or at least poetic in the way a poet choses words i.e. not just because they happen to rhyme or sound cool or relate to the title.

Think Elliott Smith or Joanna Newsom both for an idea of what I mean and how varied the music itself could be.

I will take this opportunity to plug Richard Dawson who is an incredibly talented musician and songwriter, even if he's one of these guys you'll either find to be a genius or unlistenable. Most famous works at this point are his last three solo albums which were concept albums about the past, present and future.
