Jedit posted:If you like the New Pornographers, check out the solo albums by Neko Case (early ones are listed as with Her Boyfriends, but it's all the same stuff). Middle Cyclone is probably closest to what you've heard, but I think you'll also enjoy Blacklisted and Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. Her first two albums were more countrified, so beware. "Fox Confessor" is probably the best album to come out of that whole collective, but I'm a pretty unashamed Neko Case fan. "Twin Cinema" is my favorite TNP album, but "Electric Version" and "Challengers" are also very good. "Mass Romantic", their first, has some amazing songs, but the album as a whole is weak in my eyes. (I'm often alone in that opinion.) If you want a little more of their power-pop sound, check out AC Newman's solo stuff, and if you like the weirder songs, check out Dan Bejar's band Destroyer.

I couldn't ever get into I Am the Fun Blame Monster, but Friend and Foe is amazing and Mines is solid as well. Moms is fantastic, though - totally didn't expect that with Brent gone.

Attack on Memory is pretty great, I don't see anything else topping it unless Titus Andronicus or Bat for Lashes come out with amazing albums. Which they very well might.

The SARS Volta posted:These guys had never done much for me in the past, but I'm enjoying this one quite a bit. I really like "Ceilings," too. What's he doing?? But yeah, this is a great album, reminds me of The Walkmen's later sound kinda. I enjoyed their first album a lot but this is a step up, even if there are no really catchy songs.

They've been "almost done" with an album since 2006, just like The Wrens.

Left Hand Free is a really catchy song and I've already heard it on alt-rock radio a decent bit. I find it funny, though, since according to what I read, that was their attempt at "the least Alt-J song we can imagine." The rest of it seems kinda nice, but it doesn't seem to cohere as an album for me just yet.

You know, as an fan of indie rock, I sure do like waiting for reviews to tell me what I think.

I honestly liked The Physical World almost as much as their first album, which was a pleasant surprise.

Yeah, all the time. Last time I saw them they did songs from the 5 songs EP. I'm also unimpressed by the song but considering they've been one of my favorite bands for over a decade now, I'm still excited for the new record.

The King is Dead started off as my least favorite of theirs, but nowadays that one probably is one of my favorites, outside of their early stuff that I have way too much of a sentimental attachment to.

That new TV on the Radio album is not bad at all. I wasn't too hyped for it, so it's a pleasant surprise.

The album itself is out there now. As an unabashed Decemberists fanboy, I dig it - "Philomena" and "Mistral" are especially good, but there's not too much storytelling in this one, just like The King is Dead.

Have One On Me is a bit much, even if it is brilliant. Ys was pretty perfect.

incoherent posted:Singles isn't even their best album. It's good, but not top list good. On the Water was their best, pre-"we're breaking through" album you could ask of a band. In Evening Air is my personal favorite, if only for Tin Man. Chiming in on the Parquet Courts and Kurt Vile love. KV has a new album out later this year, hopefully, which excites me because Wakin on a Pretty Daze is fantastic.

They're good and The King is Dead drops the storytelling gimmick and is probably their best anyway.

I thought "My Finest Work Yet" was a bit hyperbolically titled, but possibly my favorite since Armchair Apocrypha. Most of his mid 2010s-era stuff is good, but I don't quite recall it all. Eggs and Armchair stand out to me because they're what I got into 15-ish years ago.

February has had an embarassment of riches in terms of good indie/folk-ish music. The new Beach House, Spoon, Black Country New Road, Mitski, and Animal Collective albums are all quite good. Still looking forward to that Spiritualized album this Friday, and then I can coast for a few months just on February's releases.
