Why would anyone care what pitchfork thinks

They used to be a great source for great upcoming indie groups. At some point they got very self conscious about being labeled pretentious hipsters (which who cares), and decided they would go in the opposite direction and try and stan pop music. Now they're pretty unreliable, and they're just as likely to declare the latest Justin Bieber album of the year as they once were to declare the same for Sufjan Stevens.

I just.. it's such a bad band name. I really hate it. They're good though.

I enjoyed them enough, but at one point last year Spotify decided to only recommend sad girl indie rock to me, and 2020 was not the year to only listen to sad girl indie rock. I started to dread every time Soccer Mommy came up on random shuffle, and I had to hop on Spotify to skip it as fast as possible.

I asked this thread last year for new rock recommendations to get out of the glut of sad girl indie rock, and I seem to remember that I mostly got recommendations for punk bands, which isn't really my jam. Might as well ask again. Anyone have any recommendations for fun bands with the energy and sound of Broken Social Scene or New Pornographers? It seems like sad girl indie rock is the only thing that is making waves in the indie rock scene these days, and it's hard to find anything else worth listening to. I did finally jump on the Tame Impala train lately, about a decade late.

C: she was going for ironic iconography, which is why Pepsi Cola is paired with Cherry pies, which are also an inferior competition to an American icon (Coca-Cola and Apple pie, respectively)
D: “Pepsi cola” sounds better than “Coca Cola” because there’s less alliteration
E: before making this album she did a blind taste test and found that more Americans prefer her pussy over Coke

The new St Vincent is out today. I'm generally a big fan, even if her last tour absolutely sucked for playing to a backing track and not touring with a band, and barely moving on stage.

The new album is just okay so far. None of the singles released really blew me away, and listening to them now in the context of the whole album, they all sound a little too alike. It's like she found one song from the early 70s that she wanted to find inspiration from, and said, yes, I want the entire album to sound like this specific song, no variety.

Also, still a little weirded out by how she's marketing the album as a celebration of her father coming home from prison for doing white collar crime. It'd be one thing if it was just her being happy that he's home, but given that she is actually marketing it about that, she is surprisingly defensive when asked about it in interviews so far, and seems like she thinks the fact that he was sent to prison for so long was silly.

Sufjan Stevens has officially announced a new album, A Beginner's Mind, a collaboration with Angelo De Augustine. I've never heard of Angelo, but apparently he's a folk artist on Sufjan's label, Asthmatic Kitty Records. The album is out September 24th, with preorders up now.

The first two tracks are gorgeous, and seem more in line with the kind of stuff we got with Seven Swans and Carrie & Lowell, just not as depressing (although I haven't really listened to the lyrics yet, so maybe they're still about death).

This will mark Sufjan's 4th release in just 18 months.

I can't imagine that is actually the case maybe in Europe they weren't making huge profit but in the United States a four-piece band like them and the theaters they were able to sell out they would be making good money. He's also a person who comes from extreme wealth I guess so his own perspective is probably skewed a bit.

Which is crazy to me because when I saw them at the 930 Club, I'm pretty sure it was two sold out nights, and then when I saw them at The Anthem, an even bigger venue, I'm pretty sure it was sold out there as well.

At least they have an option now to see what the price will be with all their extra fees before you go to checkout.

They were still trying to get me to buy extra things. $10 for coat check. $20 for early entry to the venue. $30 for access to a special lounge. Not VIP or backstage, just "special."

Wanting to help out a struggling business during a pandemic like ticketmaster, of course I paid for all of them.
