I just found this thread because I was looking to see if anyone had posted about this yet I'm listening to the stream now, and it's really drat good. I think I'm about halfway through. This seems like an album that would be fantastic to listen to while driving through a city you're completely unfamiliar with. Being completely out of your element, but completely at ease. That sort of thing. edit: Actually, this is hands down one of the best albums I've heard all year. God drat. Rageaholic fucked around with this message at 22:44 on Sep 4, 2012 |

guppiehaus posted:I Was A Teenage Satan Worshipper is getting ready to release a new album. I think the best way you could describe them is psychedelic synth rock. If you're a fan of Broken Social Scene then you might find them up your alley. Their songs are often pretty repetitive but they're fun to listen to if you don't take them too seriously https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwfYvYZwI5Y I wouldn't compare this to Broken Social Scene at all, but it's really good and very retro sounding. I dig it, though this song could improve by being shorter.

http://pitchfork.com/news/49301-listen-the-strokes-new-song-one-way-trigger/ Oh my god, new Strokes song is so loving terrible Sounds like they've completely abandoned their whole garage rock aesthetic and have turned into twee pop or some poo poo. I heard the Strokes had a new song and I got really excited, but this is just not what I wanted to hear at all.

Unfortunately, changing their sound hasn't really worked out for them all that well. This sound is atrocious. I was just talking with a friend about this. First Impressions was great. Angles was completely forgettable. But at least they still sounded like The Strokes while doing it.

Going to see Pinback live tonight Never seen them before, but I've been listening to them for like...5 or 6 years. I'm not really sure what to expect, but I'm excited. I hope they play some of the classics instead of mostly material from the new album. The new album is decent but pretty forgettable.

The SARS Volta posted:They're great live — they "speed up" a lot of their catalog to make it more concert-friendly. Yeah, they were pretty good. They played literally every single song that I wanted to hear. Some of those I didn't think they'd play, and some I had forgotten I even wanted to hear, but then they kept surprising me by pulling out song after song that I've loved for years and then some of the new stuff as well. You were right about the speeding up. I noticed on a few songs, like Non-Photo Blue was played at what sounded like 125% speed for example. The audience kind of sucked though. I got a lovely spot in the back. I could see just fine, but lots of people around me were either talking over the music, looking down at their phones the entire time, only cheering when Penelope was played, etc. I don't get why some people go to shows if they're not into the music, and that seemed to apply to like half the audience tonight

Zen Guy posted:One of my favorite indie bands The Hush Sound stopped being on hiatus and released one of their new songs via the AV club. It sounds pretty different from their previous stuff but I'm still digging it. Oh man, I didn't know what happened to them but I figured they had broken up or gone on hiatus or something. The only album of theirs I have is Like Vines, but I really dig it. I didn't hear anything about them after a while. I didn't even know they'd released an album in '08. This new song is different. It's not bad at all, but it's not particularly good either. The reason I liked Like Vines so much is that, while they sounded like other similar bands at their core, they had this style that set them apart from their peers, and in many cases, put them above the rest. I'm not feeling that so much with this one. I'll reserve judgement on the album until I hear the whole thing, though.

New Phoenix album is pretty good, I think. It's no WAP, but that album hit it out of the park. This one's got more standout tracks (Entertainment, SOS In Bel Air, Trying To Be Cool, Chloroform, Bourgeois and Oblique City) than weak tracks (The Real Thing, Bankrupt!, Drakkar Noir and Don't). The title track is weird as hell and totally ruins the flow of the album, though. What the gently caress were they thinking with that one?

I saw Washed Out like...2 years ago? And they were just okay. I really dig the albums, but yeah, seeing 'em live is a pretty different experience than just listening to the albums, which I normally like when bands do that, but it didn't work out that well in this case. Thinking back on it, it was a pretty forgettable show.

Oh gently caress yeah, finally! And they won't just be sheet music? That single's pretty cool. If the rest of the album is akin to this, it's going to be pretty experimental and different than Modern Guilt. Which is cool, because I really dig his more experimental stuff. I also really dug Modern Guilt, but it's been long enough that I want to hear something different from him, and that single proves that I will. I haven't heard their new album yet, but I've had their album Hello Avalanche for a few years and really dig it. I always thought their song Truck was a perfect short little song, kind of like Fell In Love With A Girl by the White Stripes. Different genres of music, but yeah. Truck is just long enough to present a complete thought but not any longer than it needs to be. Just a very succinct song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDeTv12mulo For something sort of similar, I'd recommend checking out El Ten Eleven if you haven't already. Surprised no one posted about this, but Arcade Fire played Colbert Report tonight as "The Reflektors". It was pretty weird, since at first all you could see was these giant papier mache heads of Colbert, John Stewart, and I'm guessing a couple guys from the band: and then the camera panned over to them playing, and they're all dressed in these Western-style jackets. The song sounded really great, though. I'm pretty excited for this album

The new Beck album Morning Phase is out there and I'm a little over halfway through my first listen of it. It's decent. It's not my favorite Beck album, none of the songs I've heard so far sound like they beg to be listened to again, and this probably wasn't worth waiting 6 years for. It's not bad, though. Just not great either.

Jesus Christ. I'm listening to Sun Kil Moon's Benji for the first time and it's so depressing Previously my only SKM experience was his Modest Mouse cover album Tiny Cities, which made a lot of the songs it contained sound a lot more bleak and brooding than the originals did. And I never had any experience with Red House Painters, so this is the first time I'm hearing any of his original material, and it seems like the same applies to his originals. This album is full of truth and vivid imagery but most of it just feels so unforgiving. Those living, those dying, having sex, developing friendships, relationships with family members...it covers a lot of bases and even some minutiae about those themes, but most of them seem to end so horribly. Like there's barely any happiness anywhere to be found in anything. If I ever feel like killing myself, this is probably the album I'll put on. I want to say it's a good album. It's well done for sure. I just don't think I'll be able to listen to it very often at all because of the subject matter.

Yeah, wow, that absolutely sounds like Bon Iver, at least vocally And I like it! But if that's the route they're taking, it's certainly more exciting than what they've been doing for the last several years. I hope it's not just a one-off. If the rest of the new album doesn't sound like this, that would be pretty strange.
