I highly recommend The Mountain Goats if you like excellent song writing from someone who's not afraid to put their soul into their songs.

For albums, you might want to start with "All Hail West Texas", but "All Eternals Deck" is also quite good. So is "Tallahassee". He's released a prolific amount of material, so picking favorite songs/albums can be tough.

They're also amazing live - John Darnielle has great crowd interaction, plus you can learn little vignettes about his songs. For example, I saw them recently and learned that "Prowl Great Cain" is set in Cambodia 1979, which kind of changes the impact of the lyrics.
