It's almost as if they were reading this thread and knew who I was. They reached out to me to do a video call with a UX researcher of theirs last week and I got to walk her through all the bugs and weird UI changes I experienced.

Interesting. I sent them all my unrequested screen grabs with what a loving nightmare their site has become.

I tried submitting an audition today and got this awesome result

I can't see if it even went through. Good times.

I read an annoying thing on r/VoiceActing. Basically Voices.com has 200k users and by the time you submit any job you'll be 200 submissions too late. The sheer number of submissions is brutal. Meanwhile Voice123 has it's platinum members who get several hours head start on all job postings. There was someone in that VA thread claiming to be a V123 plat member who rakes in tens of thousands of dollars through V123. This is on top of their regular VO work. It's mildly disheartening but that's showbiz!

I've been keeping a running doc of some the VO audition scripts that I've recorded over the past year. If you're interested in grabbing some contemporary copy to read check it out. They are all from Voice123 and I'm fairly certain all of the job posters didn't care if auditioners used their auditions in their own samples.

Did I book any of them? A few. I got more work from people remembering my voice and coming back to me for something else.

This is pretty exciting. I haven't done a lot of VO in the last couple years, but I did get a call from Hasbro to do something that has been on my bucket list forever: be the voice of a toy!

I was the Red Ranger for the new Beast-X UltraZord Power Rangers toy. No idea if its a good toy, but that's definitely me doing the one million catchphrases!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tayGE1G_DOw&t=36s

It was a fun job, I had to do a soundalike for an existing actor, which ended up being that kinda surfer-sounding voice you hear there. There weren't a lot of retakes, except when it came to the trademarked phrases like "it's morphin time", where they had very specific notes about timing and inflection.

Overall, really fun! And I am a toy, which is as cool as it gets.

Very cool! Congrats. :toot:

I'm recording my 3rd segment of audiobook narration this week. I've learned so much about Java, Powershell and Microservice patterns!

This week I went to the Actors Connection meet 5 VO Agents thing they put on every few months or so. I haven't been to one in since before I worked at Riot. It went pretty well and I got good feedback. However, it's kind of a hosed up cash grab in a lot of ways. You get around 30 mins to ask questions of the agents and try to stand out. Then you get to go into a VO booth and read one piece of copy for them. They give you notes and then you get to re-do the copy with the notes. The big takeaway is that they all exclusively work with union talent. If you're willing to join the union then you can. They apparently also work with FiCore people which I didn't know was a thing until this event. At the end of the event you get these feedback sheets and they email you the track you recorded and the contact emails of the agents for you to follow up with.

Death to the gatekeepers.

Back to recording $100 regional bank ads!

NYC and LA library membership gets you access to Lynda.com tutorials for free. You can learn any Adobe, Apple or other major software that way. I don't know about Reaper. Audacity is decent for free but it's become a little clunky for me in the last couple of versions.

So the first audiobook I did for Manning is up on Audible and on the Manning site. You can experience the listen and following along sample chapter at this link.

https://livebook.manning.com/book/learn-windows-powershell-in-a-month-of-lunches-third-edition/chapter-1/

This is the only book where I did the majority of the book. On some of the other books, I read the appendix or the last few chapters. It was a good experience. I hope they get a decent amount of miles out if it.

Thanks. It was a decent experience. I am doing some seasonal work which may put a crimp in my VO work but I hope I can keep doing it. I signed up with Ahab which is some sort of audiobook casting place but I haven't heard anything from that.

I'm working on a VR game and they released a trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgN7h1nRJn4
So far it's mainly reading lore for players to find. There is more dialog coming but I haven't gotten a timeline, yet.

I was in talks for another game with tons of dialog but it dried up. Womp womp. I took a break from auditioning to really focus on getting a "normal job" but all efforts have failed.

I have been super in the dumps during the pandemic and haven't been able to record any auditions or anything because I AM NEVER ALONE in my apartment.

The VR video game came back for more lines and I was finally able to put my restored ProTools iMac to use again. Felt nice.

I mean in the "since COVID, my children and wife are almost always in the house common areas which also include my recording area" way. I did manage to record some VO last week but had to wait until midnight for everyone to be quiet enough to get the recording done.

This has been a dismal year for me (and everyone.) This week the game I did VO for came back to me for a holiday message for In-Game content. I was like YES! I asked if there were any examples of the main character VO that I did for them because I hadn't been able to find examples in game play or on any of their social media. They let me know that the whole character was axed from the game. I mean, I got paid for all the work I did but man, what a bummer. Like 20 hours of recording over months of going back and forth. Bleh.

So! I've built myself a gaming rig and decided I may as well take the plunge and stream. Like anyone's going to be interested in watching me game.

Of course, to do that I'll probably need to use something other than this old USB Snowball. What would be an appropriate setup?

I bought a Audio-Technica 2020+USB during the pandemic to participate in a podcast while I was remote during the beginning of the pandemic. I've been using it to stream fake baseball.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

In other news, I continue to do small VO jobs here and there. I'm occasionally doing VO work for that INTO THE RADIUS game that is now also on Oculus 2 or whatever. It happens randomly but is always nice to get.

I've been working at A+E for the last year as a graphics producer for Lifetime. I was repeatedly told in meetings that I should try to get VO work here. So I inquired about it. I was told they only hire VO people who have an agent. They connected me with the SVP at Atlas Talent who listened to my demo, was very complimentary, and then said "there is a lot of potential in your commercial reel, I see why they ask you that! To be honest, however, that part of our roster where you'd fit is highly competitive and we just don't have any space on the roster to take on anyone new at this time in your category." She did encourage me to keep looking for a rep but my experience has been very much this.

My contract at A+E is ending in December (means I can't work there for a year) so I'm considering getting back into the audition grind. Fun!
