It's just weird. Apple, with the iPod, finally "got right" a lot of what was wrong with the fragmented and Engrish market of MP3 players and made it accessible and easy to use. They then continued on with the iPhone and iPad - they didn't coin just a catchphrase, but literally proved that their stuff Just Works.

You tap on something, it registers. You swipe, it registers and doesn't lag. You want music? You just download it. You want apps? There's like 600,000 and growing. You don't want to choose between 9000 different variants of a product and just confuse yourself without doing mad homework? Just pick up the flavor of the year.

You have problems? Go into an actual brick and mortar store and get it replaced by guys who know what they're doing. You don't live close to one? Call Apple Care and get an English speaking guy from the same country you're calling from and get help.

Apple also has a good business practice where the customer is always right, and a very high reputation to uphold so they'll bend over backwards for their consumers

Their products are so popular that random stores stock random accessories - you can't go into one mall without finding a slew of cases or cords.

They are also so popular that the products will continue to be supported for years to come, and because it's so popular you know you're not buying into something that will phase out with it's own competitor in the same year.

People keep recommending Apple because it's like recommending it to a friend - you want to say what's best and what will work the most. You wouldn't tell someone to buy an Android that requires root and the exclusion of a front facing camera or Netflix because of it. This thread is evidence enough that it's just the wild west with Android and no one knows what the gently caress they want/are doing

When you buy any product from Apple, you also get a free personal setup where they'll open the box with you in store, give you a tour, then do things like set up your email and set you up with an app store account so when you leave the device is personalized for you.

They also have free and paid classes in store where you can meet up with other people of the same skill level and learn more about what you just bought.

All of these things add so much to the actual brand and help the millions of people that AREN'T us who don't read/care about the latest nightly that will fix your keyboard lag but break everything else.

Or you know, stick to the tablet that has a SD card that doesn't sit flush with the device. Yeah, let's support that company - they really seem to give a poo poo.

E: I should clarify that I'm not trolling - I'm simply wondering how seemingly smart people do not get how hacked together these tablets are and how you can have the wool pulled over your eyes for that long. First it was "gingerbread at CES will change everything!" then it was "ICS at CES will change everything!"

You act as if Apple is the only company in the history of capitalism to be truly altruistic or something really naive like that.

They are a business just like any other business on this planet. Good customer relations = brand loyalty = sales. Getting people in stores for demos = sales. It's not complicated, it just makes good business sense.

Now if you told me steve jobs was personally callin' you on your birthday and singin' to you, then I'd be impressed. Doubly so lately.

Of course they're doing it for business, I'm not retarded. What I'm saying is that they're hitting all the right notes as a company, but at the same time pleasing their customers. What Android tablet is doing that at the moment?

This only happens if there's an Apple store nearby and you go there instead of buying from any other place they're sold.

Any Apple product can be bought from any other store and then brought to an Apple store for repairs or help. You can literally pick the Specialists brain, get his non-commissioned advice, buy it from Best Buy, but then if you have a problem you can go to Apple. Also AppleCare comes with everything automatically regardless of where you buy it.

If you bought an iPad from Best Buy but wanted help, you could ask a Specialist for 10-20-50 minutes of his time to ask questions. Where else would you get that service? Live too far away? Call AppleCare.

That would depend on who you're asking wouldn't it?

I'd wager if Asus shipped 400,000 tablets a month from april to june, then there might be, oh I don't know, a certain amount of people that are "pleased" with that tablet? Otherwise there would be zero demand and they would no longer produce a tablet in the market, let alone 2 followups.

I'm done indulging you, there's not much of a point. You could stop making GBS threads up this thread though, but then again, that seems to be the theme.

I apologize, the numbers for that specific tablet are quite impressive, and no doubt it did a nice dent in the market. The rest of your post was quite mean though, don't know why you thought to throw that in.

Apple doesn't send their devices out of the store - most they'll do is hold onto it while parts come in. The techs live in-house.

What the gently caress? If you need GPS on your wifi device, just buy something else. Not an iPad though. Apple also didn't think people would use GPS on their wifi model.

It was listed as a feature. Now instead of people getting angry at the company and demanding satisfaction, they are taking it up the poopshoot and trying to fix it by themselves, most likely voiding the warranty, and the company gets away with it.

Try that with another company like Apple - they would be bending over backwards right now with press conferences and free poo poo to at least calm people down.

But no, keep buying their products at full price and sitting on them, and stop asking us to speak poorly of them when this is a discussion forum based on what tablets are worth buying for people who potentially come in here for advice.

My friends dad asked me yesterday about tablets because I have owned a couple. He already owned one, the famous Koby Kyros (I think that's the spelling). He turned the device on and then started telling me how much he disliked it and how slow it was to do anything. He wanted to use Maps a lot and wanted to see if I could help him find out how to do that, and also see if there's something else I'd recommend instead of his current tablet.

I told him to test drive some tablets out at different retailers that have them on display, and actually use them like you would use them at home. Try to browse your favorite websites, use the mail application, download an app, and see if it would fit your lifestyle and be user friendly enough. Ask the salespeople questions, etc.

At this point his tablet was finally on and ready to be used. This has been seriously like 5-7 minutes. No one buy this tablet.

At the end, what I'm trying to say is that the constant flooding of tablets all holding the name "Android" much higher than their real names, so everything just becomes an "Android tablet" and the extreme fragmentation of quality between them has been and will continue to lower people's expectations for products coming out.

There's too many. There's also too many bad ones. Waaay more bad ones than good ones, and I know there are good ones out there. There is no help for people getting into tablets for the first time - no one to guide them, no one to show them how to go from a mouse and keyboard interface and move to a 10 inch glass screen with multitouch gestures and all the other conventions that are flipped around? Buying an Android tablet is akin to buying a PC years ago. Way too much focus on what's really not important. This is why Apple is owning poo poo - they have a very welcoming atmosphere where you can come in and buy the best tablet on the market (you know what I mean) for half the price of a laptop and feel comfortable with you purchase because everything you need is in the store.

Personally I think it would have been such healthier competition if Google paired up with a cell phone or just computer manufacturer and built their own ecosystem instead of also giving it out to anyone who wants to install lovely bloat ware and awful, awful phones.

Something was broken that you paid money for, and the company wants you to pay for it to be shipped to them so they can fix it, and judging from the replies, chances are you will receive another broken device or just more headaches.

This isn't fanboy speak, this is just a dude on the internet saying that maybe you should not feed these guys any more money until they improve the customer experience. This in turn will improve product craftsmanship and weed out loser manufacturers that don't give two shits about their customers.

I know some 2.3/3/4+ android devices with mini-hdmi out ports support this already, like the photon(nexus?), but I love the idea of folks connecting their tabs/phones to a tv to replace desktop PC's, and now you could just use your device with popular android vnc apps as the wifi remote.

Almost makes me think Apple will be trying to do something similar to save the idea of AppleTV. Could be the right time with HD sets pretty well entrenched in the market as compared to a few years ago, and a decent way to replace a parents old computer and tiny monitor on the cheap for Father's Day.
