CharlesDexterWard posted:I was wondering if I could get some people's opinions on the title short in Occultation. I can't make my mind up whether or not it was mundane or not. Was the black spot on the wall just a shadow, or was it literally some otherworldy worm? Was the giant turtle some sort of hallucination? And the ending, did the dude secretly slip off the bed and roll under it and laugh, or did some worm come out of the then dead guy? . I think it was a callback to his earlier story about the prostitute who pulled her head off. I'm pretty sure the guy did that at the end, Thing-style. It was kind of a let down of a story though. Barron seems really hit and miss on his stories.

YolkEater posted:I really enjoy the combination of cosmic horror with the violent, gun totting, noir detective. However, I've seen this archetype shows up far more in games based around HPL's work than in any fiction I've found. I hope I didn't miss this being mentioned but if anyone has a recommendation I would be grateful. Or if you could just point out the recommendations that have already been made that combine the two themes. The was a trade paperback/graphic novel/whatchmacallit that I picked up recently called Fatale that is sort of Lovecraft meets noir. Definitely more noir than anything though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatale_(Image_Comics)

I just listened to this Fresh Air interview. I thought it had a bit of a cosmic horror vibe when this woman speaks about her odd "mystical" experiences. http://www.npr.org/2014/04/08/300520210/a-nonbeliever-tries-to-make-sense-of-the-visions-she-had-as-a-teen

I don't remember seeing it in the thread, but even if it has already been mentioned, I recently found the Southern Reach books to be good modern weird fiction. So far only the first two in the trilogy have come out: Annihilation and Authority. There's a fun sense of mystery to the story that just kept me turning the page. I definitely recommend them.

I didn't see it in a quick scan of the thread, but this looks promising. Alex Garland (recently of Ex Machina fame) is working on a film adaptation of Annihilation. http://www.slashfilm.com/annihilation-set-photos/
