Yes it's a terrible picture. But more to the point, I was standing not ten feet away, using a hotshoe flash at about half power, with AF-assist and everything, and it barely even noticed. Good practice for when you're shooting something worth taking a picture of.

I shouldn't have been so lazy, I didn't bother to get my flash.

Mine have been a little more timid- at least whenever I get my camera. They usually head up into a tree. I actually had one in the backyard tonight and I grabbed my camera and flash but as I opened the door it took off. Sometimes if there are 3 or 4 one will stay- I'll have to keep trying.

I would really recommend you not to book a full safari trip that lasts for weeks. Four days might seem short and while it is infinitely more beautiful I always compare it to a zoo visit. How long can you look at animals? The first elephants had me shouting, after 2 days you just stop taking pictures and look for something else. Then again, I would like to go longer next year so take that as you will.

This part made me laugh but mainly because I'm a biologist and probably wouldn't get sick of it until I actually got malaria...

More or less- someone on the crew went to take a leak in a little gully, and when she started climbing out she was face to face with this guy. This year was so warm we saw 5 rattlers, more than we've seen the past 6 years combined. Most of the ones we found got real upset real fast- that's not what I'm used to from rattlers in California or timbers back in the east that have always seemed really mellow.

So I'm going on a Safari in south africa, do I lug around two bodies so i can have my 70-200L with 1.4 extender on it AND something for closer shots, or do I realize that nothing will be THAT close, and if it's THAT close I can swap lenses and catch it? Lugging around another body just seems like such a hassle.

But missing a good shot...hmm...

Maybe take a nice P&S for close/wide shots?

That's pretty close to my crop + 300mm. It works most of the time although I certainly wouldn't want to go shorter. Unfortunately for longer reach you can go a little farther with one of the Sigma zooms, or shell out major money for something longer (or similar length and fast/good enough to take a TC).

I'm still half-considering getting something like an OM-D + an old Nikon 400 FD for a manual focus solution.

e: and I end up having to crop most of my wildlife pics

Skunk near the visitor center at a nearby regional park. Pretty funny to see several grown-rear end men lying prone on the ground taking pics, then when the skunk started wandering our way, getting up and backing away really quickly. Probably would have been even funnier if we'd let the 5 year olds with the water pistols get their wish to see what happens if you shoot a skunk with water.

I've heard arctic foxes can be a pain- not only in camp, but by following researchers around and eating all the animals they are trying to study. Luckily these red foxes seem not to be doing that as far as we can tell.
