Big post incoming - these are from my trip through the Yukon up into the Arctic Circle this summer:

Sheep are awesome (except for their weird pupils) and love to just hang around

and this one decided to hang around up in the tree at our campsite

These were taken at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, which I guess is their "zoo" nice place to visit for a day, if you ever go there, make sure you have lots of time, the path to get around and see all the animals is 5Km.

William T. Hornaday, what exactly is that creature?

Reminder; don't gently caress with squirrels, they won't hesitate to rip you apart

Which one? I've posted a cotton-top tamarin, Francois langur, and snow leopard.

Heh, should have been more specific, I guess that would be the snow leopard

Like those photos.

Talking about the title of this thread, would a 230mm lens (345mm equiv) be enough range to take photos of bears (in national parks, not zoos) without getting too close?

e: Not while solo hiking, either from a vehicle or with a group of people hiking.

I used a Nikon 70-300 for these from inside a truck at the side of the road, these were up in Yukon/northern BC:

Black bears don't give a gently caress, but I would never want to be any closer to a momma grizzly with cubs than we were despite being in a Ram 3500 with the driver ready to take off if the bears seemed even slightly agitated

Have never been more happy to have packed my Tamzooka while hiking, these were taken at a very safe distance, and there were enough people on the trail that the bears were going to keep their distance too.

I haven't been to Yellowstone in ~20 years, how's the bison population there? Are they easily spotted in the park and abundant or was this just good timing for you?

Cool beans. I see you were using a 150-600. How was that in the rainforest? Also, how did you pack that for international travel?

I have the original 150-600, not the G2, so there was a lot of high ISO and running around for better light (the second howler pic in particular). I have a LowePro ProTactic 450 AW It fits well in plane overhead storage and I toss my tripod in my checked luggage while flying (didn't have it when I was in northern Guatemala though)
