Here's mine. I've already posted it in the 52 books thread so anyone following that may have already added me. I agree with whoever said at the beginning of the thread that librarything is better for actually cataloging your books but I spend a lot more time on GR because of the social aspects. Also because I hit the 200 book mark, haven't felt like buying the premium librarything or whatever, and definitely don't feel like going back and adding in all the books I've gotten since then. This community is more hilarious than I ever could've imagined. The "Top 100 of 2011" list is literally 100% Romance and Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy and Self-Published Paranormal Urban Romance Fantasy etc. Either there are mostly teenage girls, and 35 year old cat ladies on Goodreads, or idiots love lists. Maybe both?

I've found the lists helpful for a few really focused topics, but in general, they're garbage. Many of the ones I've looked at in the past have so little activity that there are books on the first page that only one user voted for. The level of self-promotion on them is really loving annoying, and it's a big factor in why even some of the smaller lists are crap.

I tend to ignore that stuff and go for recommendations from reviewers that I actually trust and stick to reading only 3 or 4 star reviews with detailed criticism because those are the ones that will actually give me an good representation of what the novel in question is like.

Is there any way to control what comes in the feed? I see where I can control what I publish, but no way to control what I see. I would like to not see entries for people marking things to-read or updates for what page people are on.

At the top of the update feed there's a little down arrow. "Friend and people I'm following >" It might not have all the options you're looking for but maybe you can narrow it down a little bit.

Typically I do not give 1 or 5 star reviews because they're sort of unnecessary. I never hate a book so much that I'd give it 1, even if it somehow offended my sensibilities or opposed my ideals. And there are very few books I'll read more than twice, outside of academic reasons, and enjoy enough to 5-star. (Reading 1-star reviews of books I love is probably my most disgraceful habit. 5-star reviews of books I hate, and their simplicity, is likewise shameful but entertaining for a few minutes at least). The 'librarian' status is kind of annoying. I have books that do not exist on the site or are mis-identified or missing editions, and I used to be able to add the cover image and everything, but they restricted it. Probably due to vandalism, and it's cured me of some kind of OCD, but still I want to have the ability to do these things, you repressive website. I've actually won a few of the giveaways, but the giveaway page is filled with more and more bullshit every month and finding good/interesting books is difficult and time consuming now. It's also interesting how like 60% of Goodreads users are female.... Anyways, in more than a year I've amassed... 8 Goodreads friends. Obligatory profile link and all that.

I'm the same way, I think I've only ever given a book one star once, and that's because it was one of the most boring things I've ever read. It probably also helps that I rate books based on what the author was trying to do: I gave Harold Coyle's Team Yankee 5 stars not because it's a literary classic that will surely take its place in the Western canon in the coming generations (it's not and it won't) but because it's a fun war story and never carries pretensions of anything more. Meanwhile an actual literary work with 100x the literary merit might get 3 or 4 stars, if it wasn't as good at being a literary work as Team Yankee was good at being pulpy warporn.

I've found the Giveaway section most useful filtered by the tags. Although there are some really hilarious books posted up there. Anybody with more than a certain number of books (60?) can become a librarian. And I'm pretty sure I had the opportunity to upload covers during the recent Amazon Custody Battle, so possibly that restriction has been listed?
