Ambivalent and Shaded (who were supporting) outstaged Nicole Moudaber and Dubfire at the weekend. Some people told me it would happen before I went in the club but I didn't believe them!

I really like that Subb-an tune, but when is someone going to make a proper House / Deep House thread for that sort of music? And turn the current House thread into an "EDM" thread?

No loving clue, everyone complains about it but nobody actually does it :P

Would a thread to discuss how to split it up be ok?

I can't tell if that's a joke or not.

I was being serious, I didn't know whether or not a thread not actually discussing music would be allowed. I'll get the discussion started soon in that case.

I haven't been able to drudge up anything really great from their archive, any recommendations?

Here's a question. How do you guys know the artists you know and how do you find new artists?

I tend to go on Beatport and look at the labels my favourite artists have appeared on and go from there. It's always fun to just stick a track you know into Youtube and then sift through the related videos.

Well I think I'm finally back to normal mental capacity. Last weekend I saw (in order): Hans Bouffmyhre, Gary Beck, Pan-Pot (only one of them, the other had a tooth abcess), Julio Bashmore, Len Faki, Animal Farm, Clouds, Henrik Schwarz (live set), Joris Voorn (best set of the weekend), Nic Fanciulli, Booka Shade (live set, unreal) and Josh Wink. Sunny festival techno is the best techno.

Does anyone here produce using Ableton? I've just started using it and I was wondering what the best tutorials to check out were. Also if anyone has any of their productions on Soundcloud share them as I'd love to hear them.

I'm always interested in hearing techno & tech-house from users on here so spam your Soundclouds!

Going up from this one everything is more experimental/less refined, below it is more club friendly tracks. I'll be doing a wipe of everything shortly and starting clean with a few tracks I have in progress now.

Ableton's in-built tutorials are more than enough to learn the software - the only thing you'll learn from external tutorials is production tips that would apply to any other DAW (or even hardware/audio)

Sound advice, thanks. I guess I still have a lot to learn about Ableton and production in general.

I think you are getting the hang of it - it sounds pretty good. Needs a bit more of a hook to make it stand out though. But if you are just getting started you are definitely on the right track.

Thanks for the feedback, that seems like the general consensus of everyone that's listened to it.

This thread has been quiet so I'm going to dump lots of tunes here and you're all going to like them

Astronivo - Rost (Alberto Pascual Remix) A simple bouncey techno number with no long breakdowns
Massimo Girardi - Little Helper 75-6 Haunting tech-house
UMEK - Love To Dance UMEK is usually hit and miss for me (mostly miss) but this is definitely a hit. The hip-hop vocals and tech-house combo always works
Pig & Dan - On Edge Techno bordering on minimal
NSound - Lavitsh Hawtin used to play this out a lot and somehow made it seem more substantial than it actually is, because it's really really minimal
Kolsch - Loreley I will forever associate this song with stomping around a sunny field at a festival. Absolute banger

Here is an inquisitive paragraph if anyone feels like giving me their 2 cents.

I'm kind of a scrub who doesn't get to go to see as many (good) Djs out as I'd like. Do a lot of them mix Tech and Deep house tracks? How much blurring is there between genres? feel free to chime in with your own personal favorite DJ of the moment's habits, I'm very interested. Also how often do they incorporate their own songs into their mixes, and if they do, how much is too much/expected?

The type of music a DJ plays depends on what they like / produce, where they're playing and how well they read the crowd. I only mention the crowd thing because some DJs pre-plan their sets and don't allow room to switch things up if the crowd isn't responding well. There can be some crossover between deep and tech-house, although generally a DJ would gradually build-up to tech-house as it's faster and more rhythmic. I remember you posted in here about liking Eats Everything before, his tunes aren't strictly deep house but would fit well into a deep house set.

One of my favourite DJs in Nic Fanciulli, everytime I've seen him he plays really recognisable techno and tech-house anthems. I've seen Joris Voorn a couple of times and he plays a lot of unreleased or unheard of tech-house tunes, sometimes it's nice to go and not recognise a single tune. Also Len Faki always plays this. Always.

Probably for largely the same reasons Clapton and dozens of other artists did an Unplugged album somewhere in their career.
A&B are hugely talented musicians and this gives them a chance to arrange songs in such a way that they don't necessarily have to fit into the dance music mold.

Whilst that is all well and good, this is the techno thread and not the trance orchestra thread. The vast majority of techno tracks can't be played acoustically or arranged like that (some have though). Techno is about experimentation with sounds and making futuristic poo poo that doesn't make much sense in traditional music terms but works in a club.

Someone do an acoustic guitar cover of this please https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYi5nkC4qlQ
