Title: Thorgal
Created by Jean van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosinski
Publisher: CINEBOOK LTD
Brief description: A boy from a doomed civilization from beyond the stars grows up in viking society. They name him Thorgal Aegirsson after their gods.
Why I like it: It's an epic viking saga with laser guns (or sun swords as they're called in the comics). The art is pretty kick rear end too.
Issue that is a good jumping on point: Child of the Stars collects the origin of Thorgal.

I really wonder how they got Alan Moore of all people to write for Spawn.

I'm trying to read a comic series that takes place predominately on the sea. Pirates, sea-like adventures, I've been trying to read a lot of those types of stories lately and I have no idea where to start. Thanks!

It would be nice with some exposition though, the only reason I knew what the gently caress was going on in that comic was because of the blurb.

A new question: My boyfriend is getting into graphic novels as well, and he's read all of Guy Delisle's work (in the original French) as well as Marjane Satrapi. He borrowed my copy of Maus and flew through it in about 4 hours as well. What other (preferably French or German, but English is fine too) graphic novelists should I be on the lookout for, for him?

I like the book and it has a nice mixture of character beats and shock moments but without Staples design or being able to bounce between sweet and gross the book wouldn't be getting as much of an impact given all the delays.

The second to last issue that came out had a two page spread where there were like several thousand Viltrumites all flying full speed at Invincible, his dad, Eve, Space Racer, Allan the Alien, and his lady friend as various body parts, eyeballs, chunks of brain and other goo literally exploded on contact as they tore through them (these were young halfbreed Viltrumites). They are grossly outnumbered, however. The fight has a lot more to it than that, but yeah that moment happened. Their plan has a few different layers than that and they are busting out solid cameos left and right of older characters. We get to see tether dude again and, back on Earth, what Rudy/Robot/Clone-Rex-Splode has been up to. It's disturbing and badass at the same time. The art is top notch. Their daughter is heart warming, and the former Viltrumites back on Earth all have funny side poo poo going on now too.

Have you tried Metabarons?

Metabarons is awesome. The whole thing feels like Greek mythology in space. Sure it doesn't always make sense, but it is a glorious ride. I very much disagree with the statement that it lacks complex themes, there is a lot to explore.

Yeah, a comic where a character has to hunt down the head of the last surviving poet in the galaxy in order to feel love has some themes.

Did Rat Queens go through a soft reboot? When the last arc happened Hannah was in magical prison and her father was executed. Now he's alive and no one even seems to mention that Hannah was arrested and told her friends to gently caress off

I saw it summed up on another forum with everyone there tut-tutting and the ridiculous sci-fi sex romp stuff, how far Mike Carey has fallen, etc, and I wonder if any of them have ever heard of the source, or the movie at least.

Can't be worse than his Red Sonja comic.

Saga started so good for me but then after 2 volumes or so it now feels completely aimless and just spinning wheels until he figures out what he wants to do with the story.

I think Saga made it pretty clear what kind of story it was going to be. It was never meant to be an epic Romeo and Juliet story, but a simply a story about growing up during wartime.

I mentioned wanting to try The Incal several posts up. I read it a few weeks ago and mostly hated it. The art is good, but I feel Moebius is actually kind of overrated (I feel people are going to get mad at me for this.) His skill is there and great, but I don't really care for his sense of aesthetics if that makes sense. The plot, writing, dialogue, pacing–everything other than the art was absolutely awful. The Metabarons feels more like a fluke now than anything. I'm very put off from trying anything from Jodorowski again.

The Borgias is really good.

Read a Walk Through Hell and really liked it. When you know it's a story about hell and a child murderer written by Ennis published by an indie label you kinda expect the worst, but this is Ennis at his most restrained. The most horrible stuff is left to the reader's imagination. It also have some neat twists: The gruff agent who breaks the rules would usually be the hero but in this story she unknowingly causes the manifestation of anti-christ. There's also a part where it seems like it's all an elaborate hoax before it's revealed that, nope, this is really hell
The art is also good.

Thorgal is a very standard fantasy bit it's also really good and has beautiful art. The premise is that a kid who was born by our ancient forefathers who traveled to space gets orphaned and raised by vikings. Oh, and the norse gods and maybe the christian god are very much real.
