Has anyone ever been successfully sued for ripping off a character? Not actual use, like happens with Peter Pan or some parts of Holmes, but ripping off in the way Supreme, Samaritan, Hyperion, etc all rip off Superman.

Well, back in the 1940's National Comics (the company that would become DC Comics) sued Fawcett over the fact that Captain Marvel was too much like Superman. I'm that's the closest thing I could think of that would be like what you're describing. It was somewhat ironic, since when Superman first came out some pulp writers thought of suing Shuster and Siegel.

Please this, that kid is so loving precious. I kind of assumed (based on the narrative) the story would either end with her being an adult, or reach a point where it follows her as an adult.

I think when Vaughan first started Saga he had an alternate ending planned if the book didn't sell well where Hazel and her family die at the Rocketship Treehouse forest.

Saga #43 cam out this week (at price of only 99 cents, at least on comixology). I'm still liking this series.

my main thoughts while reading it were; is that Zebra thing inspired by the old Fruit Stripes Gum Mascot?

It's even weirder because his first appearance was in a side story of Bad Machinery where Ryan invited Mrs. Lord and her husband over for dinner. They did talk about how Ken and his wife met ages ago where he was her college professor, but Ken seemed harmless and a decent person then, not to mention he and his wife seemed happy together. So it's extremely jarring that Ken in Giant Days becomes this creep who cheats on his wife because she's on a trip and would get students drunk so they'd sleep with him.

Keep in mind that Giant Days takes place before Bad Machinery / New Bobbins, so for all we know Ken Lord might not have met the future Mrs. Lord yet. I've been binge reading my library's collection of Giant Days trades and in the the Ken Lord issue/chapter (29) Mrs. Lord isn't mentioned.

I also picked up Allison's new book Steeple and thought it was pretty good. The first issue is mainly set up for the series. Thing I kinda didn't like was that the main character, Billie Baker, reminded me a lot of Shelley Winters, who is probably my least favorite Bobbinsverse character.

Welcome Back, Galaxy Geek.
So I just finished the final issue of Steeple. Kinda liked it even though it felt rushed and ends on a cliffhanger (although Allison posted a four page epilogue on his bobbins.horse site).

Here is what Allison posted:

John Allison posted:

Today (Jan 15th) sees the release (in comic shops and on Comixology) of the final issue of Steeple from Dark Horse Comics, written and drawn by me, coloured by Sarah Stern, and lettered by Jim Campbell. A trade paperback collection is due in May.

This issue features another excellent variant cover, this time from Game of Thrones’ “Beautiful Deaths” artist Robert Ball.

I’d like to say thank you to everyone who’s been along for the ride on these five issues. Sorry to anyone who struggled to find later issues – if you’re in the UK, you can fill the gaps in your collection at Page 45.

And thank you too to everyone who has written to say they’d like to see the series continue. I would too! I have more Steeple stories ready to go, though I’m not yet sure when and where they’ll appear.

But as a thank-you to our loyal readers, all of whom were left with, let me be honest, a cruel cliffhanger, I’ve put together a four-page epilogue (that will also appear in the upcoming collection. Think of it both as a closing statement, and a bridge to future adventures. If you’ve not read the series, it’s a huge spoiler, so don’t click until you’ve read issues 1-5 first. But if you have… I hope you like it.

The best part of writing a series that feels like is works is the sudden opening up of new territory, like a video game map suddenly popping into view. I hope we get to go there eventually. So, without further ado…

THE SPOILER-HEAVY EPILOGUE!

I'm still waiting for more hardcovers. It seems weirdly slow to release?

If you mean the "Not on the Test Editions", I think they stopped making those, according to Wikipedia the last one came out October 2018. As for the regular trades, volume 12 is coming out this January or February, while 13 is due out in June. I'm guessing a final volume will come out in fall of 2020.

So I was going to wait for the collected editions of Giant Days to finish reading the series, but Comixology is having a sale on the series so I picked up the last few issues I needed. I'll still probably buy the trades when they come out.

In related John Allison news, his next comic series Wicked Things is available for pre-order on Comixology. He also started a webcomic continuation of Steeple and has posted a few pages already.

Welcome Back, Galaxy Geek.
So John Allison's Wicked Things, the comic starring Lottie from Bad Machinery, just came out today. I really enjoyed it and have been going over the questions raised from the first issue, namely:

1)Who stabbed Kendo Miyamoto? (the comic doesn't confirm whether he lived or died)

2)Why was he attacked?

3)Why was Lottie framed for the murder? Was she chosen specifically or was she just a convenient scapegoat?

His interpetor (Miss Maki) is the obvious suspect, (she intentionally mistranslated Lotties comments to Miyamoto, and she was the one who told her Miyamoto wanted to see her) but that seems too easy.

Was she working alone?

What was in the package she gave Lottie?

Were the other teen detectives in on it? (they all seem to have it in for Lottie). Why would they do it? Seems rather far for a prank.

Welcome Back, Galaxy Geek.
So I just wanted to post my reaction / theories for issue 2 of Wicked Things before issue three drops next week.

So Kendo Miyamoto, Japanese master detective, is currently in a coma, having been stabbed with Lottie's pen a pen Lottie was last seen giving to Paolo Tosto, the Italian teen detective, back in issue 1.

Nothing major seems to come to light in this issue (at least to me), but we do get some great character moments (Lottie's mum and sister at the police station, Claire doing some snooping on Lottie's behalf, the reactions of various members of the police force to Lottie).

Furthering my theories from my last post on who is behind the crime:
  1. If what Maki Yamaji said in this issue is true about Miyamoto viewing Lottie as his successor, she may have been part of the crime out of sense of jealousy towards Lottie and anger at Miyamoto.
  2. Like I said before Miyamoto was stabbed with a pen Lottie gave to Tosto in issue 1, indicating that she and the other international mystery teens (IMT) were involved. Why would they do it? I could see three possible reasons
    1. They see Lottie as an outsider. The IMT are all wealthy / upper class while Lottie is middle class.
    2. They are jealous of Lottie's successes.
    3. Their own exploits are either exaggerated or outright fabricated and they are afraid Lottie might find out.

Again these are just my thoughts on the series. I sorry I didn't post them earlier but issue 2 came out the same week as the forums future became uncertain. That and I wanted to go over the mystery in my head for a while before posting.

Also I bought two copies of this issue, a digital one and a physical copy with an alternative art-deco style cover by Veronica Fish

note that Lottie's appearance on this cover just feeds my crazy comic crossover theory that she is the reincarnation of Modesty Blaise

So Wicked Things issue 3 came out today. It's was okay but mostly about Lottie having to deal with the (mostly) dismissive police officers and her fellow inmates, nothing about Lottie's own predicament regarding her own case. We'll see if the police take Lottie's warnings about the Zambian phone theft she knows is going to happen.

Also I liked Lottie's expression in this panel:

Welcome Back, Galaxy Geek.
So John Allison posted a four page preview of Wicked Things issue 4 on his Patreon.

From the description:

John Allison posted:

Lottie must prove she is more than just a highly efficient tea and coffee maker in order to thwart the genius heist plan of two twin brothers. Plus: Detective Bohle gets a new face! A rare chance to see Ben Bishop, founder of Zambian! Witness some unconscionable hipster littering! Little Claire returns! COMPUTER ENHANCE!

Written by JOHN ALLISON, art by MAX SARIN, colours by WHITNEY COGAR, letters by JIM CAMPBELL

From that description I'm guessing that Detective Bohle is the woman scene on page 3, in disguise.

Wicked Things 4

So my theory about detective Bohle going undercover to catch the Zambian phone thieves was wrong, as the police don't take Lottie's warnings seriously until after the theft has occurred. It was neat to see Lottie conducting the investigations with the police and showing them how to effectively use social media to get info. That said no progress is made towards proving her own innocence and with only two more issues to go (unless the series gets picked up as an ongoing) I feel the conclusion to Lottie's own story might be rushed.

Welcome Back, Galaxy Geek.
So in Wicked Things 5 Lottie is helping the police investigate a series of casino heists while ignoring her own predicament regarding the murder of Kendo Miyamoto. Lottie seems confident that Miyamoto will come out of his coma and exonerate her.

Meanwhile Little Claire had been working on her own investigations, talking to both Dieter Brummer (the mystery teen from Germany, whom Claire deduces is too stupid to have framed Lottie) and Maki Yamaji (Miyamoto's translator who admits to Claire that she intentionally mistranslated Lottie's conversation to Miyamoto, claiming she wanted to protect him from Lottie). I'm surprised that Maki admitted that to Claire as I was sure Maki was involved with the frame-up and wouldn't want anything that would cast suspicions on her.

I wonder how Allison is going to wrap all this up in the next (and final) issue. I feel like it would be a cop-out if Lottie was proven innocent without seeing any work on her part.

John Allison posted a preview of Wicked Things #6 on his patreon

John Allison posted:

Some previews are sneakier than others. With 25 days until the final issue of Wicked Things comes out, this one qualifies as "upper-medium sneaky".

And with issue 6, the first arc comes to an end. I am not sure when a second will emerge - circumstances have not been on our side in 2020 to say the least, but I hope you'll be there on October 28th for what will be the final Wicked Things for now. A collection of the six issues follows next year.

So Wicked Things 6 dropped today, and I've kind of got mixed feelings about it. It was fun seeing Lottie and the police cooperating willingly but I was kind of disappointed that Bulldog was trying to use Lottie. Also while I didn't see the ending coming were Miyamoto exonerates Lottie but then dies (I was anticipating possibly one or the other but not both). I hope we get a sequel where Lottie works to find the real killer, now that she is no longer in the custody of the police.

Also from Allison's instagram it looks like he's working on a short comic featuring Lottie and Mildred that appears to be set pre Wicked Things

There's also another pic that I'm going to post in the webcomics thread.

So I got my copy of John Allison's The Great British Bump Off yesterday. It's a murder mystery set at British baking show and stars Bad Machinery's Shauna Wickle in her first solo role. The first issue is mostly set-up but I'm pretty optimistic about this series, if only because Allison is limiting himself to four issues and thus will hopefully focus on the mystery and it won't turn out like 2020 Wicked Things (which I didn't hate, but I was disappointed by).

I also read Daniel Johnson's Do A Powerbomb on my library's hoopla app and I LOVED it! I have to admit while I saw it keep getting recommended in this and other threads I didn't really know what to expect. After I checked it out it sat on my smartphone for a few days until one night when I started to read it, only meaning to read an issue or two. I ended up devouring the whole thing in one night and I have already order the physical trade.

Finally, speaking of hoopla I have been using it to go through some older comics that I didn't get to read as a kid/teen. I recently read Peter Bagge's Hate comics. It was interesting as a lot them sort of documented / predicted the Seattle Grunge culture. Also the whole saga with (spoiler for a 30-year-old comic) Stinky's corpse was kinda wild.

I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread, but BOOM! Studios launched a Lumberjanes Kickstarter a few days ago:

quote:

Great Annie Edson Taylor! It’s time to celebrate 10 years of friendship to the max with the LUMBERJANES!
Exactly a decade ago, LUMBERJANES changed the face of the middle grade comic book and graphic novel landscape when the world was introduced to Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley and the magical world of Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types.

Now, BOOM! Studios proudly commemorates the legacy of LUMBERJANES with the first-ever COMPLETE library of every LUMBERJANES comic book and graphic novel in a brand new 10th Anniversary eight volume hardcover set, along with limited edition, exclusive collectibles reserved for the truly most hardcore lady(and all other)-types.

What began as a limited series adventure within BOOM! Studios’ burgeoning BOOM! Box imprint soon exploded in popularity, capturing the imaginations of a generation of readers, and expanded into over 75 issues, a trilogy of graphic novels, a quartet of illustrated novels, in-world reference books, apparel, one singing plush cat, and other collectibles. The success of LUMBERJANES sparked an explosion of middle grade and young adult comic books and graphic novels across the publishing industry, the ramifications of which can still be felt today.

Along with collecting the entire series in a hardcover set for the first time ever, we’re also offering a 10th Anniversary reprint of the original LUMBERJANES #1 and an opportunity for longtime fans to complete their LUMBERJANES “To The Max” Edition sets. And because LUMBERJANES also sparked a love of reading in so many new readers, we’ve partnered with ComicBooks For Kids, so that your support of this BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign will also result in sets of the complete LUMBERJANES to be donated to children's hospitals and cancer centers!

Note that the Kickstarter has already reached it's funding goal (and then some).
