Will Prophet #32 end up in volume 3? I noticed it got skipped in the second trade.

So Love and Rockets. I should just start at the beginning or is there a good place to begin?

The Fantagraphics guide above is a good reference. If I had to choose I'd probably go with the Gilbert/Palomar stories, but if you feel like diving in head-first, grab the first volumes of both and see which grabs you more.

I've been waiting for new Stray Bullets for many years. At the most I was expecting a conclusion to the current arc, but we are not only getting that, but a giant omnibus, digital editions and a new series. I'm going to go re-read my issues in anticipation of March.

Anyone pick up the Stray Bullets collection? How's the quality?
I'm wondering how over 1000 pages hold up in a paperback.

The paper quality is fine. It's the glossiest that Stray Bullets has ever been, but not overly so. It's comparable to those Walking Dead compendiums. It is unwieldy of course but it's 1200 pages. There isn't really any gutter loss - I don't think Lapham ever goes outside his panel lines in the whole series.

Issue #41 or Killers #1?

41 was pretty straightforward as far as SB goes, just the summation of Ginny's adventures in high school apparently. It's scary to see her get one step closer to Harry via The Finger (or Mr. Finger as Kevin's dad calls him) but just like Spanish Scott I like The Finger even though he's a scumbag.

Killers #1 was way more intense than I thought it would be. So Eli's dad kills his former babysitter/current stripper? And gets his eyes cut out for it? Pretty intense for the first issue of a new series, but as usual Lapham does a good job balancing the crazy poo poo with boob and Star Wars jokes.

Just so I have this straight, Stray Bullets #41 finishes the previous story arc, and Killers #1 is a new arc but could have been re-numbered #42 save for Lapham not wanting to intimidate new readers. Is that correct?

Yep. It's a new arc set way in the "past" from where the last one ended. It's a good jumping on point.

Stray Bullets: Killers #2 came out this week. Virginia is back already, I was
expecting the focus to shift from her for a little longer. The first issue fits into place after seeing Eli comes around and he doesn't seem too hosed up emotionally like I figured he would be. The issue was fun for the most part, but the ending was so horribly depressing I don't want to read it again any time soon.

Son of a bitch, I knew this would happen, and I was going to ask the clerk at my comic shop, but figured they'd be on top of it, but nope. They didn't bother adding the new Stray Bullets arc to my pull list since Lapham re-numbered the series again to go along with the new name (SB: Sunshine & Roses). Now I have to wait for my comic shop to back order the first issue for me.

Jumped right into issue 2 tho, loving the return of ORSON! I'm going to have such mixed feelings over this arc since Orson was my favorite character in the Somewhere Out West storyline and his end was so tragic, but since his future and outcome's already established, Orson's taken on a Marv-like invincible-ness with his crazy wildness in this story, which is pretty cool. Also, Joey's totally Harry's kid and Lapham's set another piece to the puzzle that he started with issue 1.

Of course Rose gave Orson crabs, I laughed out loud when I read that, and it paid off in the punchline at the end of the issue.

Knowing Orson and Beth's eventual fates just makes this arc a little sad for me. I would rather see what's happening to Ginny after the events of Killers, but this is going to be a fun ride.

Holy crap... I had no idea Stray Bullets: Sunshine and Roses was going to be at least 12 issues long. It's enjoyable but it's still just a flashback when I'd rather see Ginny in the 80's.

Invincible bummed the gently caress out of me with Oliver's funeral. His mustache will be missed.

On the other hand, Stray Bullets has been a loving gas and Orson was amazing in the last issue. It reminds me of something Erik Larsen once said about Marv in Sin City. When Orson died in the first Stray Bullets run, I was devastated. He's one of my favorite fictional characters. And now that he's back in this interim story, he's taken on this invincible role because he can't die. No matter what he does. So when you see him drunkenly smashing his car head on into things, it almost becomes absurd in how he'll walk away unscathed. I'm loving it.

Long live Long Shlong Derek Ding Dong.

Also, it's crazy to think Kretchmyer's first appearance was in a teaser solicitation for the book in Diamond in 1995 and he didn't actually show up in the book until a couple years ago.

I love anything Stray Bullets but this arc has been ridiculously long. When the book came back I thought it was going to be shorter arcs like Killers. 24 issues! We may never get back to where Killers left off. I can't complain too much though since the book was basically dead until Image got it.

Being close to a stroke victim myself, the latest developments strike a nerve, but if there's any series to feel conflicted about being entertained by, it's this one.

I buy them as they come out but I started waiting to read them in one go...oh maybe 10 issues ago. I love SB to death but yeah this arc is long.

So according to BKV, Saga is only at the halfway mark and has 54 more issues before the series ends. I find that...a tiny bit disconcerting. I still like the series but I feel like it's been spinning its wheels a bit the last two or three years. I thought there would be like two more years at most. If they actually do get to 108 then the series still has six more years left when it comes back, which seems like a lot.

As long as they are working towards a definite ending, that’s more important to me than how long it takes.

Trying to get back into monthly comics instead of just reading old TPBs. What are some good titles I can sink my teeth into?

The stuff I've liked the most so far:

Barbaric
Above Snakes
The Kill Lock
Heart Eyes
Shaolin Cowboy
The Silver Coin

I guess sort of that actiony neon style is appealing?

I was gifted two Scott Snyder trades, the first volumes of Nocterra and Undiscovered Country. I can't say I liked either one that much. Undiscovered Country is trying way too hard to say something Important and felt "random" in a bad way. Didn't like any of the characters. Nocterra was better in characterization and it has a cleaner premise. And I have to say that Tony Daniel's art doesn't bug me as much as it did on his Batman run. Not adding either book to my pull list, but if I see cheap issues/tpbs of Nocterra I'd probably grab them.

I can definitely second Kaya, Hitomi, All Against All, Spy Superb. Kaya in particular is great if you’re looking for an ongoing - the first TPB just came out.

Black Cloak has pulled me in even though the art isn’t really my thing. The cityscapes are beautiful but I don’t really care for the way the characters are drawn.

20th Century Men was the best book I read last year - the TPB is about to come out. It’s an interesting mix of cold war politics/philosophy and twisted mechs/superheroes. I think I’ve compared it to Metal Gear Solid before in this thread but it’s the best parallel I can think of.

For something funny check out Santos Sisters - two bratty superhero sisters in a few short stories every issue. Definitely an adult book but drawn in an Archie retro style.

Has anyone else checked out A Vicious Circle from Boom? It's a time travel story where the main characters are trying to avert and cause the apocalypse respectively and the art is pretty striking. It starts out in realistic black and white but with each shift in time the style changes completely. On my initial read I was sure there were multiple artists but I guess Lee Bermejo is just really good at a lot of things.

Here are some samples:

The one below is a good example of how things shift.

Ah yes, the classic time travel scenario.

I don't love the lettering but that's a minor issue in the scheme of things and I'd recommend this book pretty strongly.

It’s a gorgeous book and the shifting art style is such a big flex from Bermejo. I don’t know that the story is worth it on its own but I’d buy it just to flip through and stare.

Kaya continues to impress with #12, the second “stand-alone” story that isn’t going to be collected in the TPBs. I have to imagine that if this series ever gets a big hardcover they will be in there. Really interesting look into the robo villains.

Didn’t like Army of Darkness Forever #1 much. It’s trying to wrangle multiple timelines but it wasn’t clicking for me. Maybe after a couple more issues it will be clearer.
